but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. | 1Jesus, however, went to the Mount of Olives. |
Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. | 2At daybreak he appeared again in the Temple, and all the people came to him. So he sat down and began to teach them. |
The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst | 3But the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery. After setting her before them, |
they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. | 4they told him, "Teacher, this woman has been caught in the very act of adultery. |
Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” | 5Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women to death. What do you say?" |
This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. | 6They said this to test him, so that they might have a charge against him. But Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with his finger. |
And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” | 7When they persisted in questioning him, he straightened up and told them, "Let the person among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her." |
And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. | 8Then he bent down again and continued writing on the ground. |
But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. | 9When they heard this, they went away one by one, beginning with the oldest, and he was left alone with the woman standing there. |
Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” | 10Then Jesus stood up and asked her, "Dear lady, where are your accusers? Hasn't anyone condemned you?" |
She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.” ]] | 11"No one, sir," she replied. Then Jesus said, "I don't condemn you, either. Go home, and from now on don't sin anymore." |
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” | 12Later on, Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. The one who follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." |
So the Pharisees said to him, “You are bearing witness about yourself; your testimony is not true.” | 13The Pharisees told him, "You're testifying about yourself. Your testimony isn't valid." |
Jesus answered, “Even if I do bear witness about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going. | 14Jesus answered them, "Even though I'm testifying about myself, my testimony is valid because I know where I've come from and where I'm going. But you don't know where I come from or where I'm going. |
You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one. | 15You're judging by human standards, but I'm not judging anyone. |
Yet even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent me. | 16Yet even if I should judge, my judgment would be valid, because it is not I alone who judges, but I and the one who sent me. |
In your Law it is written that the testimony of two people is true. | 17In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two people is valid. |
I am the one who bears witness about myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness about me.” | 18I'm testifying about myself, and the Father who sent me is testifying about me." |
They said to him therefore, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.” | 19Then they asked him, "Where is this Father of yours?" Jesus replied, "You don't know me or my Father. If you had known me, you would've known my Father, too." |
These words he spoke in the treasury, as he taught in the temple; but no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come. | 20He spoke these words in the treasury, while he was teaching in the Temple. Yet no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come. |
So he said to them again, “I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.” | 21Later on, he told them again, "I'm going away, and you'll look for me, but you will die in your sin. You cannot come where I'm going." |
So the Jews said, “Will he kill himself, since he says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?” | 22So the Jewish leaders were asking, "He isn't going to kill himself, is he? Is that why he said, 'You cannot come where I'm going'?" |
He said to them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. | 23He told them, "You are from below, I'm from above. You are of this world, but I'm not of this world. |
I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.” | 24That is why I told you that you will die in your sins, for unless you believe that I AM, you'll die in your sins." |
So they said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning. | 25Then they asked him, "Who are you?" Jesus told them, "What have I been telling you all along? |
I have much to say about you and much to judge, but he who sent me is true, and I declare to the world what I have heard from him.” | 26I have much to say about you and to condemn you for. But the one who sent me is truthful, and what I've heard from him I declare to the world." |
They did not understand that he had been speaking to them about the Father. | 27They didn't realize that he was talking to them about the Father. |
So Jesus said to them, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me. | 28So Jesus told them, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I AM, and that I do nothing on my own authority. Instead, I speak only what the Father has taught me. |
And he who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him.” | 29Moreover, the one who sent me is with me. He has never left me alone, because I always do what pleases him." |
As he was saying these things, many believed in him. | 30While he was saying these things, many believed in him. |
So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, | 31So Jesus told those Jews who had believed in him, "If you continue in my word, you are really my disciples. |
and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” | 32And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." |
They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?” | 33They replied to him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves to anybody. So how can you say, 'You will be set free'?" |
Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. | 34Jesus answered them, "Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, that everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin. |
The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. | 35The slave does not remain in the household forever, but the son does remain forever. |
So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. | 36So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed!" |
I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. | 37"I know that you are Abraham's descendants. Yet you are trying to kill me because you've not received what I've told you. |
I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.” | 38I declare what I've seen in my Father's presence, and you're doing what you've heard from your father." |
They answered him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works Abraham did, | 39They replied to him, "Our father is Abraham!" Jesus told them, "If you were Abraham's children, you would be doing what Abraham did. |
but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. | 40But now you're trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham would'nt have done that. |
You are doing the works your father did.” They said to him, “We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father—even God.” | 41You are doing your father's actions." They told him, "We're not illegitimate children. We have one Father, God himself." |
Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me. | 42Jesus told them, "If God were your Father, you would've loved me, because I came from God and am here. I haven't come on my own accord, but he sent me. |
Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word. | 43Why don't you understand what I've said? It's because you can't listen to my words. |
You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. | 44You belong to your father the devil, and you want to carry out the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning and has never stood for truth, since there is no truth in him. Whenever he tells a lie, he speaks in character, because he is a liar and the father of lies. |
But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. | 45But it is because I speak the truth that you don't believe me. |
Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? | 46Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I'm telling the truth, why don't you believe me? |
Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.” | 47The one who belongs to God listens to the words of God. The reason you don't listen is because you don't belong to God." |
The Jews answered him, “Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?” | 48The Jewish leaders replied to him, "Surely we're right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon, aren't we?" |
Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. | 49Jesus answered, "I don't have a demon. On the contrary, I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. |
Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it, and he is the judge. | 50I don't seek my own glory. There is one who seeks it, and he is the Judge. |
Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.” | 51Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death." |
The Jews said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon! Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.’ | 52Then the Jewish leaders told him, "Now we really know that you have a demon. Abraham died, and so did the prophets, but you say, 'If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.' |
Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you make yourself out to be?” | 53You aren't greater than our father Abraham, who died, are you? The prophets also died. Who are you making yourself out to be?" |
Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’ | 54Jesus answered, "If I were trying to glorify myself, my glory would mean nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, 'He is our God.' |
But you have not known him. I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and I keep his word. | 55You don't know him, but I know him. If I were to say that I don't know him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know him and keep his word. |
Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.” | 56Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day, and he saw it and was glad." |
So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” | 57Then the Jewish leaders asked him, "You are not even 50 years old, yet you have seen Abraham?" |
Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” | 58Jesus told them, "Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, before there was an Abraham, I AM!" |
So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple. | 59At this, they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the Temple. |
