| 1Now the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread were two days away, and the chief priests and scribes were looking for a covert way to arrest Jesus and kill Him. | 1It was now two days before Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread. The leading priests and the teachers of religious law were still looking for an opportunity to capture Jesus secretly and kill him. |
| 2“But not during the feast,” they said, “or there may be a riot among the people.” | 2“But not during the Passover celebration,” they agreed, “or the people may riot.” |
| 3While Jesus was in Bethany reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke open the jar and poured it on Jesus’ head. | 3Meanwhile, Jesus was in Bethany at the home of Simon, a man who had previously had leprosy. | 4Some of those present, however, expressed their indignation to one another: “Why this waste of perfume? | 4Some of those at the table were indignant. “Why waste such expensive perfume?” they asked. |
| 5It could have been sold for over three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor.” And they scolded her. | 5“It could have been sold for a year’s wages and the money given to the poor!” So they scolded her harshly. |
| 6But Jesus said, “Leave her alone; why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful deed to Me. | 6But Jesus replied, “Leave her alone. Why criticize her for doing such a good thing to me? |
| 7The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them whenever you want. But you will not always have Me. | 7 You will always have the poor among you, and you can help them whenever you want to. But you will not always have me. |

| 22While they were eating, Jesus took bread, spoke a blessing and broke it, and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take it; this is My body.” | 22As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. | 41When Jesus returned the third time, He said, “Are you still sleeping and resting? That is enough! The hour has come. | 43While Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived, accompanied by a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, scribes, and elders. | 43And immediately, even as Jesus said this, Judas, one of the twelve disciples, arrived with a crowd of men armed with swords and clubs. They had been sent by the leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the elders. |
| 44Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The One I kiss is the man; arrest Him and lead Him away securely.” | 44The traitor, Judas, had given them a prearranged signal: “You will know which one to arrest when I greet him with a kiss. Then you can take him away under guard.” |
| 45Going directly to Jesus, he said, “Rabbi!” and kissed Him. | 45As soon as they arrived, Judas walked up to Jesus. “Rabbi!” he exclaimed, and gave him the kiss. |
| 46Then the men seized Jesus and arrested Him. | 46Then the others grabbed Jesus and arrested him. |

| 48Jesus asked the crowd, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would an outlaw? | 48Jesus asked them, “Am I some dangerous revolutionary, that you come with swords and clubs to arrest me? |
| 49Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest Me. But this has happened that the Scriptures would be fulfilled.” | 49 Why didn’t you arrest me in the Temple? I was there among you teaching every day. But these things are happening to fulfill what the Scriptures say about me.” |

| 53They led Jesus away to the high priest, and all the chief priests, elders, and scribes assembled. | 53They took Jesus to the high priest’s home where the leading priests, the elders, and the teachers of religious law had gathered. |
| 54Peter followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he sat with the officers and warmed himself by the fire. | 54Meanwhile, Peter followed him at a distance and went right into the high priest’s courtyard. | 55Now the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were seeking testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but they did not find any. | 55Inside, the leading priests and the entire high council were trying to find evidence against Jesus, so they could put him to death. But they couldn’t find any. |
| 56For many bore false witness against Jesus, but their testimony was inconsistent. | 56Many false witnesses spoke against him, but they contradicted each other. |
| 57Then some men stood up and testified falsely against Him: | 57Finally, some men stood up and gave this false testimony: |
| 58“We heard Him say, ‘I will destroy this man-made temple, and in three days I will build another that is made without hands.’ ” | 58“We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this Temple made with human hands, and in three days I will build another, made without human hands.’” |
| 59But even their testimony was inconsistent. | 59But even then they didn’t get their stories straight! |
| 60So the high priest stood up before them and questioned Jesus, “Have You no answer? What are these men testifying against You?” | 60Then the high priest stood up before the others and asked Jesus, “Well, aren’t you going to answer these charges? What do you have to say for yourself?” |
| 61But Jesus remained silent and made no reply. Again the high priest questioned Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?” | 61But Jesus was silent and made no reply. Then the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?” |
| 62“I am,” said Jesus, “and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.” | 62Jesus said, “ I Am . And you will see the Son of Man seated in the place of power at God’s right hand and coming on the clouds of heaven. ” |
| 63At this, the high priest tore his clothes and declared, “Why do we need any more witnesses? | 63Then the high priest tore his clothing to show his horror and said, “Why do we need other witnesses? |
| 64You have heard the blasphemy. What is your verdict?” And they all condemned Him as deserving of death. | 64You have all heard his blasphemy. What is your verdict?” “Guilty!” they all cried. “He deserves to die!” |
| 65Then some of them began to spit on Him. They blindfolded Him, struck Him with their fists, and said to Him, “Prophesy!” And the officers received Him with slaps in His face. | 65Then some of them began to spit at him, and they blindfolded him and beat him with their fists. “Prophesy to us,” they jeered. | 68But he denied it. “I do not know or even understand what you are talking about,” he said. Then he went out to the gateway, and the rooster crowed. | 68But Peter denied it. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said, and he went out into the entryway. Just then, a rooster crowed. |
| 69There the servant girl saw him and again said to those standing nearby, “This man is one of them.” | 69When the servant girl saw him standing there, she began telling the others, “This man is definitely one of them!” |
| 70But he denied it again. After a little while, those standing nearby said once more to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you too are a Galilean.” | 70But Peter denied it again. A little later some of the other bystanders confronted Peter and said, “You must be one of them, because you are a Galilean.” |
| 71But he began to curse and swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak!” | 71Peter swore, “A curse on me if I’m lying—I don’t know this man you’re talking about!” |
| 72And immediately the rooster crowed a second time. Then Peter remembered the word that Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And he broke down and wept. | 72And immediately the rooster crowed the second time.
