The Coming Judgment
(Genesis 3:1-7; Genesis 7:1-5; Romans 5:12-21)
1Ταύτην (This) ἤδη (now), ἀγαπητοί (beloved), δευτέραν (is the second) ὑμῖν (to you) γράφω (I am writing) ἐπιστολήν (letter), ἐν (in) αἷς (which) διεγείρω (I am stirring up) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐν (in) ὑπομνήσει (putting you in remembrance) τὴν (-) εἰλικρινῆ (pure) διάνοιαν (mind),
2μνησθῆναι (to remember) τῶν (the) προειρημένων (having been spoken beforehand) ῥημάτων (words)— ὑπὸ (by) τῶν (the) ἁγίων (holy) προφητῶν (prophets) καὶ (and) τῆς (of the) τῶν (-) ἀποστόλων (apostles) ὑμῶν (through your)— ἐντολῆς (commandment) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) καὶ (and) Σωτῆρος (Savior),
3τοῦτο (this) πρῶτον (first) γινώσκοντες (knowing), ὅτι (that) ἐλεύσονται (will come) ἐπ’ (in) ἐσχάτων (the last) τῶν (of the) ἡμερῶν (days) ἐν (with) ἐμπαιγμονῇ (scoffing) ἐμπαῖκται (scoffers), κατὰ (according to) τὰς (-) ἰδίας (own) ἐπιθυμίας (evil desires) αὐτῶν (of them) πορευόμενοι (following)
4καὶ (and) λέγοντες (saying), “Ποῦ (Where) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) ἐπαγγελία (promise) τῆς (of the) παρουσίας (coming) αὐτοῦ (of Him)? ἀφ’ (From) ἧς (the time that) γὰρ (for) οἱ (the) πατέρες (fathers) ἐκοιμήθησαν (fell asleep), πάντα (all things) οὕτως (as they were) διαμένει (continue) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning) κτίσεως (of creation).”
5Λανθάνει (It is concealed from) γὰρ (indeed) αὐτοὺς (them) τοῦτο (this) θέλοντας (willingly), ὅτι (that) οὐρανοὶ (heavens) ἦσαν (existed) ἔκπαλαι (long ago), καὶ (and) γῆ (the earth) ἐξ (out of) ὕδατος (water) καὶ (and) δι’ (through) ὕδατος (water) συνεστῶσα (having been composed) τῷ (by the) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) λόγῳ (word),
6δι’ (through) ὧν (which)a ὁ (the) τότε (at that time) κόσμος (world), ὕδατι (with water) κατακλυσθεὶς (having been deluged), ἀπώλετο (perished).
7οἱ (-) δὲ (But) νῦν (now) οὐρανοὶ (the heavens) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) γῆ (earth), τῷ (by the) αὐτῷ (same) λόγῳ (word) τεθησαυρισμένοι (having been stored up) εἰσὶν (exist), πυρὶ (for fire) τηρούμενοι (being kept) εἰς (unto) ἡμέραν (the day) κρίσεως (of judgment) καὶ (and) ἀπωλείας (destruction) τῶν (-) ἀσεβῶν (of ungodly) ἀνθρώπων (men).
The Day of the Lord
(Zephaniah 1:7-18; 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11)
8Ἓν (This one) δὲ (however) τοῦτο (thing) μὴ (not) λανθανέτω (let be hidden from) ὑμᾶς (you), ἀγαπητοί (beloved), ὅτι (that) μία (one) ἡμέρα (day) παρὰ (with the) Κυρίῳ (Lord is) ὡς (like) χίλια (a thousand) ἔτη (years), καὶ (and) χίλια (a thousand) ἔτη (years) ὡς (like) ἡμέρα (day) μία (one).
9οὐ (Not) βραδύνει (does delay) Κύριος (the Lord) τῆς (the) ἐπαγγελίας (promise), ὥς (as) τινες (some) βραδύτητα (slowness) ἡγοῦνται (esteem), ἀλλὰ (but) μακροθυμεῖ (is patient) εἰς (toward) ὑμᾶς (you), μὴ (not) βουλόμενός (willing) τινας (for any) ἀπολέσθαι (to perish), ἀλλὰ (but) πάντας (all) εἰς (to) μετάνοιαν (repentance) χωρῆσαι (to come).
10Ἥξει (Will come) δὲ (however) ἡμέρα (the day) Κυρίου (of the Lord) ὡς (like) κλέπτης (a thief), ἐν (in) ᾗ (which) οἱ (the) οὐρανοὶ (heavens) ῥοιζηδὸν (with a roar) παρελεύσονται (will pass away), στοιχεῖα (elements) δὲ (then) καυσούμενα (burning with heat) λυθήσεται (will be dissolved), καὶ (and) γῆ (the earth) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) ἐν (in) αὐτῇ (it) ἔργα (works) [οὐχ] (not) εὑρεθήσεται (will be found).b
11Τούτων (These things) οὕτως (in this way) πάντων (all) λυομένων (being dissolved), ποταποὺς (what kind) δεῖ (ought) ὑπάρχειν (to be) ὑμᾶς (you)? ἐν (In) ἁγίαις (holy) ἀναστροφαῖς (conduct) καὶ (and) εὐσεβείαις (godliness),
12προσδοκῶντας (expecting) καὶ (and) σπεύδοντας (hastening) τὴν (the) παρουσίαν (coming) τῆς (of the) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἡμέρας (day), δι’ (by reason of) ἣν (which) οὐρανοὶ (the heavens) πυρούμενοι (being set on fire) λυθήσονται (will be dissolved), καὶ (and) στοιχεῖα (the elements) καυσούμενα (burning with heat) τήκεται (are melting).
13καινοὺς (New) δὲ (however) οὐρανοὺς (heavens), καὶ (and) γῆν (earth) καινὴν (a new), κατὰ (according to) τὸ (the) ἐπάγγελμα (promise) αὐτοῦ (of Him), προσδοκῶμεν (we are awaiting), ἐν (in) οἷς (which) δικαιοσύνη (righteousness) κατοικεῖ (dwells).
Final Exhortations
14Διό (Therefore), ἀγαπητοί (beloved), ταῦτα (these things) προσδοκῶντες (expecting), σπουδάσατε (be diligent) ἄσπιλοι (without spot) καὶ (and) ἀμώμητοι (without blemish) αὐτῷ (by Him) εὑρεθῆναι (to be found), ἐν (in) εἰρήνῃ (peace).
15Καὶ (And) τὴν (the) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) μακροθυμίαν (patience) σωτηρίαν (as salvation) ἡγεῖσθε (esteem), καθὼς (just as) καὶ (also) ὁ (-) ἀγαπητὸς (beloved) ἡμῶν (of us) ἀδελφὸς (brother) Παῦλος (Paul), κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) δοθεῖσαν (having been given) αὐτῷ (to him) σοφίαν (wisdom), ἔγραψεν (wrote) ὑμῖν (to you),
16ὡς (as) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) πάσαις (all) ‹ταῖς› (the) ἐπιστολαῖς (letters),c λαλῶν (speaking) ἐν (in) αὐταῖς (them) περὶ (concerning) τούτων (these things), ἐν (among) αἷς (which) ἐστιν (are) δυσνόητά (difficult to be understood) τινα (some things), ἃ (which) οἱ (the) ἀμαθεῖς (ignorant) καὶ (and) ἀστήρικτοι (unestablished) στρεβλοῦσιν (distort),d ὡς (as) καὶ (also) τὰς (the) λοιπὰς (other) γραφὰς (Scriptures), πρὸς (to) τὴν (the) ἰδίαν (own) αὐτῶν (of them) ἀπώλειαν (destruction).
17Ὑμεῖς (You) οὖν (therefore), ἀγαπητοί (beloved), προγινώσκοντες (knowing this beforehand), φυλάσσεσθε (beware), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) τῇ (by the) τῶν (of the) ἀθέσμων (lawless) πλάνῃ (error) συναπαχθέντες (having been led away), ἐκπέσητε (you should fall from) τοῦ (the) ἰδίου (own) στηριγμοῦ (steadfastness).
18αὐξάνετε (Grow) δὲ (however) ἐν (in) χάριτι (grace), καὶ (and) γνώσει (in knowledge) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) καὶ (and) Σωτῆρος (Savior) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ). αὐτῷ (To Him be) ἡ (the) δόξα (glory) καὶ (both) νῦν (now) καὶ (and) εἰς (to) ἡμέραν (the day) αἰῶνος (of eternity).
