2 Samuel 22
1. David's psalm of thanksgiving for God's deliverance and blessings

For the waves of death engulfed me;
This phrase uses the imagery of waves to describe overwhelming danger and distress. In the ancient Near Eastern context, water often symbolized chaos and destruction. The "waves of death" suggest a life-threatening situation, possibly reflecting David's experiences of being pursued by enemies like Saul or during battles. This imagery is reminiscent of Jonah's prayer from the belly of the fish (Jonah 2:3), where he describes being surrounded by waters. It also echoes the psalmist's cry in Psalm 69:1-2, where he pleads for deliverance from deep waters. The metaphor of waves can also be seen as a type of Christ's suffering, where He faced the ultimate "waves" of death on the cross for humanity's salvation.

the torrents of chaos overwhelmed me.
"Torrents of chaos" further emphasizes the intensity of the peril faced. In biblical literature, torrents or floods often symbolize overwhelming trials or divine judgment, as seen in the account of Noah's flood (Genesis 6-9). The term "chaos" here can be linked to the Hebrew concept of "tohu wa-bohu," meaning formlessness and void, as in Genesis 1:2, representing disorder and confusion. This phrase may also connect to the spiritual battles believers face, as described in Ephesians 6:12, where the struggle is against spiritual forces of evil. The overwhelming nature of these torrents can be seen as a foreshadowing of Christ's agony in Gethsemane, where He was "overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death" (Matthew 26:38), highlighting His identification with human suffering and His victory over chaos through His resurrection.

Persons / Places / Events
1. David
The author of this song of deliverance, David is reflecting on God's deliverance from his enemies and from the hand of Saul. This chapter is a song of thanksgiving and praise to God for His protection and deliverance.

2. Waves of Death
This metaphorical expression describes the overwhelming danger and threat of death that David faced. It symbolizes the perilous situations he encountered throughout his life.

3. Torrents of Chaos
Another metaphorical expression, indicating the overwhelming and chaotic challenges that threatened to destroy David. It reflects the tumultuous and unpredictable nature of his adversities.

4. Enemies
While not directly mentioned in this verse, the context of the chapter involves David's deliverance from his enemies, including King Saul and other adversaries.

5. God's Deliverance
The overarching theme of this chapter is God's intervention and deliverance, which is a central event in David's life and testimony.
Teaching Points
God's Deliverance in Times of Trouble
Just as David experienced overwhelming threats, believers today can trust in God's power to deliver them from life's challenges and adversities.

The Power of Metaphor in Scripture
The use of vivid imagery, such as "waves of death" and "torrents of chaos," helps convey the intensity of David's experiences and can deepen our understanding of the emotional and spiritual battles we face.

Faith Amidst Chaos
In times of chaos and uncertainty, maintaining faith in God's sovereignty and deliverance is crucial. David's example encourages believers to hold fast to their faith even when circumstances seem insurmountable.

The Importance of Praise and Thanksgiving
David's response to deliverance is a song of praise. Believers are reminded to cultivate a heart of gratitude and worship, acknowledging God's hand in their lives.

Reflection on Personal Testimonies
Like David, believers are encouraged to reflect on their own experiences of God's deliverance and share their testimonies as a means of encouragement to others.(5) The waves of death.--In Psalms 18, "the sorrows of death," in the Authorised Version, but literally, the bands of death. The word is entirely different, and the variation can hardly have been accidental. The form here accords better with the parallelism of the next clause.

Verses 5-7. -

"For the breakers of death surrounded me;
Torrents of wickedness
[Hebrew, 'of Belial'] terrified me;
Cords of Sheol surrounded me;
Snares of death came suddenly upon me.
In my distress I cried unto Jehovah,
And to my God I cried.
And he heard my voice out of his palace,
And my cry was in his ears."
Instead of breakers - waves dashing violently on rocks - Psalm 18:4 has "cords of death;" translated "sorrow" in the Authorized Version. But "cords of death" mean the fatal snares of the hunter, and are not in keeping with "torrents of wickedness." "Belial," literally, "worthlessness," is by many supposed, from the context to mean herd "destruction," that is, physical instead of moral wickedness. So in Nahum 1:11 "a counsellor of Belial" means a ruinous, destructive counsellor. Sheol is the world of the departed, and is equivalent to "death." Cried is the same verb twice used. In Psalm 18:6 it is altered, in the former part of the verse unto "I called" - a change probably suggested by the more fastidious taste of a later age. For temple we should translate palace, or heavenly temple. It is not the temple in Jerusalem, which was not yet built, but God's heavenly dwelling, that is meant. Instead of the terse ellipse, "And my cry in his ears," the full but heavy phrase, "My cry before him came into his ears," is substituted in Psalm 18:6.
