The Lord now chose seventy-two other disciples and sent them ahead in pairs to all the towns and places he planned to visit.1After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go.
These were his instructions to them: “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.2He told them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.
Now go, and remember that I am sending you out as lambs among wolves.3Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.
Don’t take any money with you, nor a traveler’s bag, nor an extra pair of sandals. And don’t stop to greet anyone on the road.4Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.
“Whenever you enter someone’s home, first say, ‘May God’s peace be on this house.’5"When you enter a house, first say, 'Peace to this house.'
If those who live there are peaceful, the blessing will stand; if they are not, the blessing will return to you.6If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you.
Don’t move around from home to home. Stay in one place, eating and drinking what they provide. Don’t hesitate to accept hospitality, because those who work deserve their pay.7Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house.
“If you enter a town and it welcomes you, eat whatever is set before you.8"When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is offered to you.
Heal the sick, and tell them, ‘The Kingdom of God is near you now.’9Heal the sick who are there and tell them, 'The kingdom of God has come near to you.'
But if a town refuses to welcome you, go out into its streets and say,10But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say,
‘We wipe even the dust of your town from our feet to show that we have abandoned you to your fate. And know this—the Kingdom of God is near!’11Even the dust of your town we wipe from our feet as a warning to you. Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God has come near.'
I assure you, even wicked Sodom will be better off than such a town on judgment day.12I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.
“What sorrow awaits you, Korazin and Bethsaida! For if the miracles I did in you had been done in wicked Tyre and Sidon, their people would have repented of their sins long ago, clothing themselves in burlap and throwing ashes on their heads to show their remorse.13"Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.
Yes, Tyre and Sidon will be better off on judgment day than you.14But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you.
And you people of Capernaum, will you be honored in heaven? No, you will go down to the place of the dead. ”15And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.
Then he said to the disciples, “Anyone who accepts your message is also accepting me. And anyone who rejects you is rejecting me. And anyone who rejects me is rejecting God, who sent me.”16"Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; but whoever rejects me rejects him who sent me."
When the seventy-two disciples returned, they joyfully reported to him, “Lord, even the demons obey us when we use your name!”17The seventy-two returned with joy and said, "Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name."
“Yes,” he told them, “I saw Satan fall from heaven like lightning!18He replied, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
Look, I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy, and you can walk among snakes and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you.19I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.
But don’t rejoice because evil spirits obey you; rejoice because your names are registered in heaven.” Jesus’ Prayer of Thanksgiving20However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven."
At that same time Jesus was filled with the joy of the Holy Spirit, and he said, “O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike. Yes, Father, it pleased you to do it this way.21At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.
“My Father has entrusted everything to me. No one truly knows the Son except the Father, and no one truly knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”22"All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him."
Then when they were alone, he turned to the disciples and said, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you have seen.23Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, "Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.
I tell you, many prophets and kings longed to see what you see, but they didn’t see it. And they longed to hear what you hear, but they didn’t hear it.” The Most Important Commandment24For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it."
One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question: “Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?”25On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
Jesus replied, “What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?”26"What is written in the Law?" he replied. "How do you read it?"
The man answered, “‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ And, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”27He answered, "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'"
“Right!” Jesus told him. “Do this and you will live!”28"You have answered correctly," Jesus replied. "Do this and you will live."
The man wanted to justify his actions, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Parable of the Good Samaritan29But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"
Jesus replied with a story: “A Jewish man was traveling from Jerusalem down to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road.30In reply Jesus said: "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead.
“By chance a priest came along. But when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by.31A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side.
A Temple assistant walked over and looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the other side.32So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.
“Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him.33But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him.
Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him.34He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him.
The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins, telling him, ‘Take care of this man. If his bill runs higher than this, I’ll pay you the next time I’m here.’35The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. 'Look after him,' he said, 'and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.'
“Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?” Jesus asked.36"Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?"
The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.” Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.” Jesus Visits Martha and Mary37The expert in the law replied, "The one who had mercy on him." Jesus told him, "Go and do likewise."
As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home.38As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him.
Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught.39She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said.
But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.”40But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!"
But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details!41"Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things,
There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”42but few things are needed--or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."
