New Living Translation | NET Bible |
O LORD, God of my salvation, I cry out to you by day. I come to you at night. | 1A song, a psalm written by the Korahites; for the music director; according to the machalath-leannoth style; a well-written song by Heman the Ezrachite. O LORD God who delivers me! By day I cry out and at night I pray before you. |
Now hear my prayer; listen to my cry. | 2Listen to my prayer! Pay attention to my cry for help! |
For my life is full of troubles, and death draws near. | 3For my life is filled with troubles and I am ready to enter Sheol. |
I am as good as dead, like a strong man with no strength left. | 4They treat me like those who descend into the grave. I am like a helpless man, |
They have left me among the dead, and I lie like a corpse in a grave. I am forgotten, cut off from your care. | 5adrift among the dead, like corpses lying in the grave, whom you remember no more, and who are cut off from your power. |
You have thrown me into the lowest pit, into the darkest depths. | 6You place me in the lowest regions of the pit, in the dark places, in the watery depths. |
Your anger weighs me down; with wave after wave you have engulfed me. Interlude | 7Your anger bears down on me, and you overwhelm me with all your waves. (Selah) |
You have driven my friends away by making me repulsive to them. I am in a trap with no way of escape. | 8You cause those who know me to keep their distance; you make me an appalling sight to them. I am trapped and cannot get free. |
My eyes are blinded by my tears. Each day I beg for your help, O LORD; I lift my hands to you for mercy. | 9My eyes grow weak because of oppression. I call out to you, O LORD, all day long; I spread out my hands in prayer to you. |
Are your wonderful deeds of any use to the dead? Do the dead rise up and praise you? Interlude | 10Do you accomplish amazing things for the dead? Do the departed spirits rise up and give you thanks? (Selah) |
Can those in the grave declare your unfailing love? Can they proclaim your faithfulness in the place of destruction? | 11Is your loyal love proclaimed in the grave, or your faithfulness in the place of the dead? |
Can the darkness speak of your wonderful deeds? Can anyone in the land of forgetfulness talk about your righteousness? | 12Are your amazing deeds experienced in the dark region, or your deliverance in the land of oblivion? |
O LORD, I cry out to you. I will keep on pleading day by day. | 13As for me, I cry out to you, O LORD; in the morning my prayer confronts you. |
O LORD, why do you reject me? Why do you turn your face from me? | 14O LORD, why do you reject me, and pay no attention to me? |
I have been sick and close to death since my youth. I stand helpless and desperate before your terrors. | 15I am oppressed and have been on the verge of death since my youth. I have been subjected to your horrors and am numb with pain. |
Your fierce anger has overwhelmed me. Your terrors have paralyzed me. | 16Your anger overwhelms me; your terrors destroy me. |
They swirl around me like floodwaters all day long. They have engulfed me completely. | 17They surround me like water all day long; they join forces and encircle me. |
You have taken away my companions and loved ones. Darkness is my closest friend. | 18You cause my friends and neighbors to keep their distance; those who know me leave me alone in the darkness. |
