New Living TranslationHolman Christian Standard Bible
O LORD, God of my salvation, I cry out to you by day. I come to you at night.1A song. A psalm of the sons of Korah. For the choir director: according to Mahalath Leannoth. A Maskil of Heman the Ezrahite. LORD, God of my salvation, I cry out before You day and night.
Now hear my prayer; listen to my cry.2May my prayer reach Your presence; listen to my cry.
For my life is full of troubles, and death draws near.3For I have had enough troubles, and my life is near Sheol.
I am as good as dead, like a strong man with no strength left.4I am counted among those going down to the Pit. I am like a man without strength,
They have left me among the dead, and I lie like a corpse in a grave. I am forgotten, cut off from your care.5abandoned among the dead. I am like the slain lying in the grave, whom You no longer remember, and who are cut off from Your care.
You have thrown me into the lowest pit, into the darkest depths.6You have put me in the lowest part of the Pit, in the darkest places, in the depths.
Your anger weighs me down; with wave after wave you have engulfed me. Interlude7Your wrath weighs heavily on me; You have overwhelmed me with all Your waves. Selah
You have driven my friends away by making me repulsive to them. I am in a trap with no way of escape.8You have distanced my friends from me; You have made me repulsive to them. I am shut in and cannot go out.
My eyes are blinded by my tears. Each day I beg for your help, O LORD; I lift my hands to you for mercy.9My eyes are worn out from crying. LORD, I cry out to You all day long; I spread out my hands to You.
Are your wonderful deeds of any use to the dead? Do the dead rise up and praise you? Interlude10Do You work wonders for the dead? Do departed spirits rise up to praise You? Selah
Can those in the grave declare your unfailing love? Can they proclaim your faithfulness in the place of destruction?11Will Your faithful love be declared in the grave, Your faithfulness in Abaddon?
Can the darkness speak of your wonderful deeds? Can anyone in the land of forgetfulness talk about your righteousness?12Will Your wonders be known in the darkness or Your righteousness in the land of oblivion?
O LORD, I cry out to you. I will keep on pleading day by day.13But I call to You for help, LORD; in the morning my prayer meets You.
O LORD, why do you reject me? Why do you turn your face from me?14 LORD, why do You reject me? Why do You hide Your face from me?
I have been sick and close to death since my youth. I stand helpless and desperate before your terrors.15From my youth, I have been afflicted and near death. I suffer Your horrors; I am desperate.
Your fierce anger has overwhelmed me. Your terrors have paralyzed me.16Your wrath sweeps over me; Your terrors destroy me.
They swirl around me like floodwaters all day long. They have engulfed me completely.17They surround me like water all day long; they close in on me from every side.
You have taken away my companions and loved ones. Darkness is my closest friend.18You have distanced loved one and neighbor from me; darkness is my only friend.
