New Living Translation | Holman Christian Standard Bible |
O LORD, God of my salvation, I cry out to you by day. I come to you at night. | 1A song. A psalm of the sons of Korah. For the choir director: according to Mahalath Leannoth. A Maskil of Heman the Ezrahite. LORD, God of my salvation, I cry out before You day and night. |
Now hear my prayer; listen to my cry. | 2May my prayer reach Your presence; listen to my cry. |
For my life is full of troubles, and death draws near. | 3For I have had enough troubles, and my life is near Sheol. |
I am as good as dead, like a strong man with no strength left. | 4I am counted among those going down to the Pit. I am like a man without strength, |
They have left me among the dead, and I lie like a corpse in a grave. I am forgotten, cut off from your care. | 5abandoned among the dead. I am like the slain lying in the grave, whom You no longer remember, and who are cut off from Your care. |
You have thrown me into the lowest pit, into the darkest depths. | 6You have put me in the lowest part of the Pit, in the darkest places, in the depths. |
Your anger weighs me down; with wave after wave you have engulfed me. Interlude | 7Your wrath weighs heavily on me; You have overwhelmed me with all Your waves. Selah |
You have driven my friends away by making me repulsive to them. I am in a trap with no way of escape. | 8You have distanced my friends from me; You have made me repulsive to them. I am shut in and cannot go out. |
My eyes are blinded by my tears. Each day I beg for your help, O LORD; I lift my hands to you for mercy. | 9My eyes are worn out from crying. LORD, I cry out to You all day long; I spread out my hands to You. |
Are your wonderful deeds of any use to the dead? Do the dead rise up and praise you? Interlude | 10Do You work wonders for the dead? Do departed spirits rise up to praise You? Selah |
Can those in the grave declare your unfailing love? Can they proclaim your faithfulness in the place of destruction? | 11Will Your faithful love be declared in the grave, Your faithfulness in Abaddon? |
Can the darkness speak of your wonderful deeds? Can anyone in the land of forgetfulness talk about your righteousness? | 12Will Your wonders be known in the darkness or Your righteousness in the land of oblivion? |
O LORD, I cry out to you. I will keep on pleading day by day. | 13But I call to You for help, LORD; in the morning my prayer meets You. |
O LORD, why do you reject me? Why do you turn your face from me? | 14 LORD, why do You reject me? Why do You hide Your face from me? |
I have been sick and close to death since my youth. I stand helpless and desperate before your terrors. | 15From my youth, I have been afflicted and near death. I suffer Your horrors; I am desperate. |
Your fierce anger has overwhelmed me. Your terrors have paralyzed me. | 16Your wrath sweeps over me; Your terrors destroy me. |
They swirl around me like floodwaters all day long. They have engulfed me completely. | 17They surround me like water all day long; they close in on me from every side. |
You have taken away my companions and loved ones. Darkness is my closest friend. | 18You have distanced loved one and neighbor from me; darkness is my only friend. |
