New Living Translation | International Standard Version |
O God, we have heard it with our own ears— our ancestors have told us of all you did in their day, in days long ago: | 1God, we heard it with our ears; our ancestors told us about what you did in their day— a long time ago. |
You drove out the pagan nations by your power and gave all the land to our ancestors. You crushed their enemies and set our ancestors free. | 2With your hand you expelled the nations and established our ancestors. You afflicted nations and cast them out. |
They did not conquer the land with their swords; it was not their own strong arm that gave them victory. It was your right hand and strong arm and the blinding light from your face that helped them, for you loved them. | 3It was not with their sword that they inherited the land, nor did their own arm deliver them. But it was by your power, your strength, and by the light of your face; because you were pleased with them. |
You are my King and my God. You command victories for Israel. | 4You are my king, God, command victories for Jacob. |
Only by your power can we push back our enemies; only in your name can we trample our foes. | 5Through you we will knock down our oppressors; through your name we will tread down those who rise up against us. |
I do not trust in my bow; I do not count on my sword to save me. | 6For I place no confidence in my bow, nor will my sword deliver me. |
You are the one who gives us victory over our enemies; you disgrace those who hate us. | 7For you delivered us from our oppressors and put to shame those who hate us. |
O God, we give glory to you all day long and constantly praise your name. Interlude | 8We will praise God all day long; and to your name we will give thanks forever. Interlude |
But now you have tossed us aside in dishonor. You no longer lead our armies to battle. | 9However, you cast us off and made us ashamed! You did not even march with our armies! |
You make us retreat from our enemies and allow those who hate us to plunder our land. | 10You made us retreat from our oppressors. Our enemies ransacked us. |
You have butchered us like sheep and scattered us among the nations. | 11You handed us over to be slaughtered like sheep and you scattered us among the nations. |
You sold your precious people for a pittance, making nothing on the sale. | 12You sold out your people for nothing, and made no profit at that price. |
You let our neighbors mock us. We are an object of scorn and derision to those around us. | 13You made us a laughing stock to our neighbors, a source of mockery and derision to those around us. |
You have made us the butt of their jokes; they shake their heads at us in scorn. | 14You made us an object lesson among the nations; people shake their heads at us. |
We can’t escape the constant humiliation; shame is written across our faces. | 15My dishonor tortures me continuously; the shame on my face overwhelms me |
All we hear are the taunts of our mockers. All we see are our vengeful enemies. | 16because of the voice of the one who mocks and reviles, because of the enemy and the avenger. |
All this has happened though we have not forgotten you. We have not violated your covenant. | 17All this came upon us, yet we did not forsake you, and we have not dealt falsely with your covenant; |
Our hearts have not deserted you. We have not strayed from your path. | 18Our hearts have not turned away; our steps have not swerved from your path. |
Yet you have crushed us in the jackal’s desert home. You have covered us with darkness and death. | 19Nevertheless, you crushed us in the lair of jackals, and covered us in deep darkness. |
If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread our hands in prayer to foreign gods, | 20If we had forgotten the name of our God or lifted our hands to a foreign god, |
God would surely have known it, for he knows the secrets of every heart. | 21wouldn't God find out since he knows the secrets of the heart? |
But for your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep. | 22For your sake we are being killed all day long. We are thought of as sheep to be slaughtered. |
Wake up, O Lord! Why do you sleep? Get up! Do not reject us forever. | 23Wake up! Why are you asleep, Lord? Get up! Don't cast us off forever! |
Why do you look the other way? Why do you ignore our suffering and oppression? | 24Why are you hiding your face? Why are you ignoring our affliction and oppression? |
We collapse in the dust, lying face down in the dirt. | 25For we have collapsed in the dust; our bodies cling to the ground. |
Rise up! Help us! Ransom us because of your unfailing love. | 26Arise! Deliver us! Redeem us according to your gracious love! |
