New Living Translation | Berean Study Bible |
O God, we have heard it with our own ears— our ancestors have told us of all you did in their day, in days long ago: | 1For the choirmaster. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. We have heard with our ears, O God; our fathers have told us the work You did in their days, in the days of old. |
You drove out the pagan nations by your power and gave all the land to our ancestors. You crushed their enemies and set our ancestors free. | 2With Your hand You drove out the nations and planted our fathers there; You crushed the peoples and cast them out. |
They did not conquer the land with their swords; it was not their own strong arm that gave them victory. It was your right hand and strong arm and the blinding light from your face that helped them, for you loved them. | 3For it was not by their sword that they took the land; their arm did not bring them victory. It was by Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your face, because You favored them. |
You are my King and my God. You command victories for Israel. | 4You are my King, O God, who ordains victories for Jacob. |
Only by your power can we push back our enemies; only in your name can we trample our foes. | 5Through You we repel our foes; through Your name we trample our enemies. |
I do not trust in my bow; I do not count on my sword to save me. | 6For I do not trust in my bow, nor does my sword save me. |
You are the one who gives us victory over our enemies; you disgrace those who hate us. | 7For You save us from our enemies; You put those who hate us to shame. |
O God, we give glory to you all day long and constantly praise your name. Interlude | 8In God we have boasted all day long, and Your name we will praise forever. Selah |
But now you have tossed us aside in dishonor. You no longer lead our armies to battle. | 9But You have rejected and humbled us; You no longer go forth with our armies. |
You make us retreat from our enemies and allow those who hate us to plunder our land. | 10You have made us retreat from the foe, and those who hate us have plundered us. |
You have butchered us like sheep and scattered us among the nations. | 11You have given us up as sheep to be devoured; You have scattered us among the nations. |
You sold your precious people for a pittance, making nothing on the sale. | 12You sell Your people for nothing; no profit do You gain from their sale. |
You let our neighbors mock us. We are an object of scorn and derision to those around us. | 13You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, a mockery and derision to those around us. |
You have made us the butt of their jokes; they shake their heads at us in scorn. | 14You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples. |
We can’t escape the constant humiliation; shame is written across our faces. | 15All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face, |
All we hear are the taunts of our mockers. All we see are our vengeful enemies. | 16at the voice of the scorner and reviler, because of the enemy, bent on revenge. |
All this has happened though we have not forgotten you. We have not violated your covenant. | 17All this has come upon us, though we have not forgotten You or betrayed Your covenant. |
Our hearts have not deserted you. We have not strayed from your path. | 18Our hearts have not turned back; our steps have not strayed from Your path. |
Yet you have crushed us in the jackal’s desert home. You have covered us with darkness and death. | 19But You have crushed us in the lair of jackals; You have covered us with deepest darkness. |
If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread our hands in prayer to foreign gods, | 20If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god, |
God would surely have known it, for he knows the secrets of every heart. | 21would not God have discovered, since He knows the secrets of the heart? |
But for your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep. | 22Yet for Your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered. |
Wake up, O Lord! Why do you sleep? Get up! Do not reject us forever. | 23Wake up, O Lord! Why are You sleeping? Arise! Do not reject us forever. |
Why do you look the other way? Why do you ignore our suffering and oppression? | 24Why do You hide Your face and forget our affliction and oppression? |
We collapse in the dust, lying face down in the dirt. | 25For our soul has sunk to the dust; our bodies cling to the earth. |
Rise up! Help us! Ransom us because of your unfailing love. | 26Rise up; be our help! Redeem us on account of Your loving devotion. |
