| 1O God, we have heard it with our own ears— our ancestors have told us of all you did in their day, in days long ago: | 1O God, we have heard with our ears, our fathers have told us, what deeds you performed in their days, in the days of old: |
| 2You drove out the pagan nations by your power and gave all the land to our ancestors. You crushed their enemies and set our ancestors free. | 2you with your own hand drove out the nations, but them you planted; you afflicted the peoples, but them you set free; |
| 3They did not conquer the land with their swords; it was not their own strong arm that gave them victory. It was your right hand and strong arm and the blinding light from your face that helped them, for you loved them. | 3for not by their own sword did they win the land, nor did their own arm save them, but your right hand and your arm, and the light of your face, for you delighted in them. |
| 4You are my King and my God. You command victories for Israel. | 4You are my King, O God; ordain salvation for Jacob! |
| 5Only by your power can we push back our enemies; only in your name can we trample our foes. | 5Through you we push down our foes; through your name we tread down those who rise up against us. |
| 6I do not trust in my bow; I do not count on my sword to save me. | 6For not in my bow do I trust, nor can my sword save me. |
| 7You are the one who gives us victory over our enemies; you disgrace those who hate us. | 7But you have saved us from our foes and have put to shame those who hate us. |
| 8O God, we give glory to you all day long and constantly praise your name. Interlude | 8In God we have boasted continually, and we will give thanks to your name forever. Selah |
| 9But now you have tossed us aside in dishonor. You no longer lead our armies to battle. | 9But you have rejected us and disgraced us and have not gone out with our armies. |
| 10You make us retreat from our enemies and allow those who hate us to plunder our land. | 10You have made us turn back from the foe, and those who hate us have gotten spoil. |
| 11You have butchered us like sheep and scattered us among the nations. | 11You have made us like sheep for slaughter and have scattered us among the nations. |
| 12You sold your precious people for a pittance, making nothing on the sale. | 12You have sold your people for a trifle, demanding no high price for them. |
| 13You let our neighbors mock us. We are an object of scorn and derision to those around us. | 13You have made us the taunt of our neighbors, the derision and scorn of those around us. |
| 14You have made us the butt of their jokes; they shake their heads at us in scorn. | 14You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples. |
| 15We can’t escape the constant humiliation; shame is written across our faces. | 15All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face |
| 16All we hear are the taunts of our mockers. All we see are our vengeful enemies. | 16at the sound of the taunter and reviler, at the sight of the enemy and the avenger. |
| 17All this has happened though we have not forgotten you. We have not violated your covenant. | 17All this has come upon us, though we have not forgotten you, and we have not been false to your covenant. |
| 18Our hearts have not deserted you. We have not strayed from your path. | 18Our heart has not turned back, nor have our steps departed from your way; |
| 19Yet you have crushed us in the jackal’s desert home. You have covered us with darkness and death. | 19yet you have broken us in the place of jackals and covered us with the shadow of death. |
| 20If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread our hands in prayer to foreign gods, | 20If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god, |
| 21God would surely have known it, for he knows the secrets of every heart. | 21would not God discover this? For he knows the secrets of the heart. |
| 22But for your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep. | 22Yet for your sake we are killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered. |
| 23Wake up, O Lord! Why do you sleep? Get up! Do not reject us forever. | 23Awake! Why are you sleeping, O Lord? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever! |
| 24Why do you look the other way? Why do you ignore our suffering and oppression? | 24Why do you hide your face? Why do you forget our affliction and oppression? |
| 25We collapse in the dust, lying face down in the dirt. | 25For our soul is bowed down to the dust; our belly clings to the ground. |
| 26Rise up! Help us! Ransom us because of your unfailing love. | 26Rise up; come to our help! Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love! |
