And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease. | 1And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease. |
Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; | 2Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; |
Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; | 3Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; |
Simon the Cananite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him. | 4Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him. |
These twelve Jesus sent out and commanded them, saying: “Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of the Samaritans. | 5These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: |
But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. | 6But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. |
And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ | 7And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. |
Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give. | 8Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give. |
Provide neither gold nor silver nor copper in your money belts, | 9Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses, |
nor bag for your journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor staffs; for a worker is worthy of his food. | 10Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat. |
“Now whatever city or town you enter, inquire who in it is worthy, and stay there till you go out. | 11And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, inquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence. |
And when you go into a household, greet it. | 12And when ye come into an house, salute it. |
If the household is worthy, let your peace come upon it. But if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. | 13And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you. |
And whoever will not receive you nor hear your words, when you depart from that house or city, shake off the dust from your feet. | 14And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet. |
Assuredly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city! | 15Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city. |
“Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. | 16Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. |
But beware of men, for they will deliver you up to councils and scourge you in their synagogues. | 17But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues; |
You will be brought before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. | 18And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles. |
But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; | 19But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. |
for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you. | 20For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you. |
“Now brother will deliver up brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. | 21And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death. |
And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved. | 22And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved. |
When they persecute you in this city, flee to another. For assuredly, I say to you, you will not have gone through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes. | 23But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come. |
“A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. | 24The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord. |
It is enough for a disciple that he be like his teacher, and a servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more will they call those of his household! | 25It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household? |
Therefore do not fear them. For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known. | 26Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known. |
“Whatever I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, preach on the housetops. | 27What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops. |
And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. | 28And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. |
Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. | 29Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. |
But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. | 30But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. |
Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. | 31Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows. |
“Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. | 32Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. |
But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven. | 33But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven. |
“Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. | 34Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. |
For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; | 35For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. |
and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’ | 36And a man's foes shall be they of his own household. |
He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. | 37He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. |
And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. | 38And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. |
He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it. | 39He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it. |
“He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me. | 40He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me. |
He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward. And he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward. | 41He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward. |
And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.” | 42And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward. |
