And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease.1Summoning his twelve disciples, he gave them authority over unclean spirits, to drive them out and to heal every disease and sickness.
Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;2These are the names of the twelve apostles: First, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;
Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus;3Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;
Simon the Cananite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.4Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.
These twelve Jesus sent out and commanded them, saying: “Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of the Samaritans.5Jesus sent out these twelve after giving them instructions: "Don't take the road that leads to the Gentiles, and don't enter any Samaritan town.
But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.6Instead, go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’7As you go, proclaim: 'The kingdom of heaven has come near.'
Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.8Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those with leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you received, freely give.
Provide neither gold nor silver nor copper in your money belts,9Don't acquire gold, silver, or copper for your money-belts.
nor bag for your journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor staffs; for a worker is worthy of his food.10Don't take a traveling bag for the road, or an extra shirt, sandals, or a staff, for the worker is worthy of his food.
“Now whatever city or town you enter, inquire who in it is worthy, and stay there till you go out.11When you enter any town or village, find out who is worthy, and stay there until you leave.
And when you go into a household, greet it.12Greet a household when you enter it,
If the household is worthy, let your peace come upon it. But if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you.13and if the household is worthy, let your peace be on it; but if it is unworthy, let your peace return to you.
And whoever will not receive you nor hear your words, when you depart from that house or city, shake off the dust from your feet.14If anyone does not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that house or town.
Assuredly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!15Truly I tell you, it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.
“Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.16"Look, I'm sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as serpents and as innocent as doves.
But beware of men, for they will deliver you up to councils and scourge you in their synagogues.17Beware of them, because they will hand you over to local courts and flog you in their synagogues.
You will be brought before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles.18You will even be brought before governors and kings because of me, to bear witness to them and to the Gentiles.
But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak;19But when they hand you over, don't worry about how or what you are to speak. For you will be given what to say at that hour,
for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.20because it isn't you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father is speaking through you.
“Now brother will deliver up brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death.21"Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise up against parents and have them put to death.
And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.22You will be hated by everyone because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.
When they persecute you in this city, flee to another. For assuredly, I say to you, you will not have gone through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes.23When they persecute you in one town, flee to another. For truly I tell you, you will not have gone through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
“A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master.24A disciple is not above his teacher, or a slave above his master.
It is enough for a disciple that he be like his teacher, and a servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more will they call those of his household!25It is enough for a disciple to become like his teacher and a slave like his master. If they called the head of the house 'Beelzebul,' how much more the members of his household!
Therefore do not fear them. For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known.26"Therefore, don't be afraid of them, since there is nothing covered that won't be uncovered and nothing hidden that won't be made known.
“Whatever I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, preach on the housetops.27What I tell you in the dark, speak in the light. What you hear in a whisper, proclaim on the housetops.
And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.28Don't fear those who kill the body but are not able to kill the soul; rather, fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will.29Aren't two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father's consent.
But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.30But even the hairs of your head have all been counted.
Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.31So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
“Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven.32"Therefore, everyone who will acknowledge me before others, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven.
But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.33But whoever denies me before others, I will also deny him before my Father in heaven.
“Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword.34Don't assume that I came to bring peace on the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.
For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’;35For I came to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;
and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’36and a man's enemies will be the members of his household.
He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.37The one who loves a father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; the one who loves a son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.38And whoever doesn't take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.
He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.39Anyone who finds his life will lose it, and anyone who loses his life because of me will find it.
“He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.40"The one who welcomes you welcomes me, and the one who welcomes me welcomes him who sent me.
He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward. And he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward.41Anyone who welcomes a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward. And anyone who welcomes a righteous person because he's righteous will receive a righteous person's reward.
And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.”42And whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is a disciple, truly I tell you, he will never lose his reward."
