1Then the scribes and Pharisees who were from Jerusalem came to Jesus, saying,

1Then Jesus was approached by Pharisees and scribes from Jerusalem, who asked,

2“Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.”

2"Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they don't wash their hands when they eat."

3He answered and said to them, “Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition?

3He answered them, "Why do you break God's commandment because of your tradition?

4For God commanded, saying, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’

4For God said: Honor your father and your mother; and, Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death.

5But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to God”—

5But you say, 'Whoever tells his father or mother, "Whatever benefit you might have received from me is a gift committed to the temple,"

6then he need not honor his father or mother.’ Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition.

6he does not have to honor his father.' In this way, you have nullified the word of God because of your tradition.

7Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying:

8‘These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me.

8This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

9And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ ”

9They worship me in vain, teaching as doctrines human commands."

10When He had called the multitude to Himself, He said to them, “Hear and understand:

10Summoning the crowd, he told them, "Listen and understand:

11Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.”

11It's not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth--this defiles a person."

12Then His disciples came and said to Him, “Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?”

12Then the disciples came up and told him, "Do you know that the Pharisees took offense when they heard what you said?"

13But He answered and said, “Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted.

13He replied, "Every plant that my heavenly Father didn't plant will be uprooted.

14Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch.”

14Leave them alone! They are blind guides. And if the blind guide the blind, both will fall into a pit."

15Then Peter answered and said to Him, “Explain this parable to us.”

15Then Peter said, "Explain this parable to us."

16So Jesus said, “Are you also still without understanding?

16"Do you still lack understanding?" he asked.

17Do you not yet understand that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and is eliminated?

17"Don't you realize that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is eliminated?

18But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man.

18But what comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and this defiles a person.

19For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.

19For from the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, thefts, false testimonies, slander.

20These are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man.”

20These are the things that defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile a person."

21Then Jesus went out from there and departed to the region of Tyre and Sidon.

21When Jesus left there, he withdrew to the area of Tyre and Sidon.

22And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried out to Him, saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed.”

22Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came and kept crying out, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely tormented by a demon."

23But He answered her not a word. And His disciples came and urged Him, saying, “Send her away, for she cries out after us.”

23Jesus did not say a word to her. His disciples approached him and urged him, "Send her away because she's crying out after us."

24But He answered and said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

24He replied, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel."

25Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, help me!”

25But she came, knelt before him, and said, "Lord, help me!"

26But He answered and said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.”

26He answered, "It isn't right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs."

27And she said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.”

27"Yes, Lord," she said, "yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table."

28Then Jesus answered and said to her, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour.

28Then Jesus replied to her, "Woman, your faith is great. Let it be done for you as you want." And from that moment her daughter was healed.

29Jesus departed from there, skirted the Sea of Galilee, and went up on the mountain and sat down there.

29Moving on from there, Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee. He went up on a mountain and sat there,

30Then great multitudes came to Him, having with them the lame, blind, mute, maimed, and many others; and they laid them down at Jesus’ feet, and He healed them.

30and large crowds came to him, including the lame, the blind, the crippled, those unable to speak, and many others. They put them at his feet, and he healed them.

31So the multitude marveled when they saw the mute speaking, the maimed made whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel.

31So the crowd was amazed when they saw those unable to speak talking, the crippled restored, the lame walking, and the blind seeing, and they gave glory to the God of Israel.

32Now Jesus called His disciples to Himself and said, “I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat. And I do not want to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.”

32Jesus called his disciples and said, "I have compassion on the crowd, because they've already stayed with me three days and have nothing to eat. I don't want to send them away hungry, otherwise they might collapse on the way."

33Then His disciples said to Him, “Where could we get enough bread in the wilderness to fill such a great multitude?”

33The disciples said to him, "Where could we get enough bread in this desolate place to feed such a crowd?"

34Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven, and a few little fish.”

34"How many loaves do you have?" Jesus asked them. "Seven," they said, "and a few small fish."

35So He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground.

35After commanding the crowd to sit down on the ground,

36And He took the seven loaves and the fish and gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitude.

37So they all ate and were filled, and they took up seven large baskets full of the fragments that were left.

38Now those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children.

39And He sent away the multitude, got into the boat, and came to the region of Magdala.
