New King James Version | English Standard Version |
Then the scribes and Pharisees who were from Jerusalem came to Jesus, saying, | 1Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, |
“Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.” | 2“Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat.” |
He answered and said to them, “Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? | 3He answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? |
For God commanded, saying, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’ | 4For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ |
But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to God”— | 5But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or his mother, “What you would have gained from me is given to God,” |
then he need not honor his father or mother.’ Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition. | 6he need not honor his father.’ So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word of God. |
Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying: | 7You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said: |
‘These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. | 8“‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; |
And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ ” | 9in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’” |
When He had called the multitude to Himself, He said to them, “Hear and understand: | 10And he called the people to him and said to them, “Hear and understand: |
Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.” | 11it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.” |
Then His disciples came and said to Him, “Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?” | 12Then the disciples came and said to him, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?” |
But He answered and said, “Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. | 13He answered, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up. |
Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch.” | 14Let them alone; they are blind guides. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.” |
Then Peter answered and said to Him, “Explain this parable to us.” | 15But Peter said to him, “Explain the parable to us.” |
So Jesus said, “Are you also still without understanding? | 16And he said, “Are you also still without understanding? |
Do you not yet understand that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and is eliminated? | 17Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled? |
But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man. | 18But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. |
For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. | 19For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. |
These are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man.” | 20These are what defile a person. But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile anyone.” |
Then Jesus went out from there and departed to the region of Tyre and Sidon. | 21And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. |
And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried out to Him, saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed.” | 22And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.” |
But He answered her not a word. And His disciples came and urged Him, saying, “Send her away, for she cries out after us.” | 23But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away, for she is crying out after us.” |
But He answered and said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” | 24He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” |
Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, help me!” | 25But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” |
But He answered and said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.” | 26And he answered, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” |
And she said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.” | 27She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” |
Then Jesus answered and said to her, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour. | 28Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed instantly. |
Jesus departed from there, skirted the Sea of Galilee, and went up on the mountain and sat down there. | 29Jesus went on from there and walked beside the Sea of Galilee. And he went up on the mountain and sat down there. |
Then great multitudes came to Him, having with them the lame, blind, mute, maimed, and many others; and they laid them down at Jesus’ feet, and He healed them. | 30And great crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and they put them at his feet, and he healed them, |
So the multitude marveled when they saw the mute speaking, the maimed made whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel. | 31so that the crowd wondered, when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled healthy, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they glorified the God of Israel. |
Now Jesus called His disciples to Himself and said, “I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat. And I do not want to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.” | 32Then Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion on the crowd because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. And I am unwilling to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.” |
Then His disciples said to Him, “Where could we get enough bread in the wilderness to fill such a great multitude?” | 33And the disciples said to him, “Where are we to get enough bread in such a desolate place to feed so great a crowd?” |
Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven, and a few little fish.” | 34And Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven, and a few small fish.” |
So He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground. | 35And directing the crowd to sit down on the ground, |
And He took the seven loaves and the fish and gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitude. | 36he took the seven loaves and the fish, and having given thanks he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. |
So they all ate and were filled, and they took up seven large baskets full of the fragments that were left. | 37And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up seven baskets full of the broken pieces left over. |
Now those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children. | 38Those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children. |
And He sent away the multitude, got into the boat, and came to the region of Magdala. | 39And after sending away the crowds, he got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan. |
