We have heard it with our ears, O God; our ancestors have told us what you did in their days, in days long ago. | 1For the choir director. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. O God, we have heard with our ears, Our fathers have told us The work that You did in their days, In the days of old. |
| 2With your hand you drove out the nations and planted our ancestors; you crushed the peoples and made our ancestors flourish. | 2You with Your own hand drove out the nations; Then You planted them; You afflicted the peoples, Then You spread them abroad. |
| 3It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them. | 3For by their own sword they did not possess the land, And their own arm did not save them, But Your right hand and Your arm and the light of Your presence, For You favored them. |
| 4You are my King and my God, who decrees victories for Jacob. | 4You are my King, O God; Command victories for Jacob. |
| 5Through you we push back our enemies; through your name we trample our foes. | 5Through You we will push back our adversaries; Through Your name we will trample down those who rise up against us. |
| 6I put no trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory; | 6For I will not trust in my bow, Nor will my sword save me. |
| 7but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame. | 7But You have saved us from our adversaries, And You have put to shame those who hate us. |
| 8In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever. | 8In God we have boasted all day long, And we will give thanks to Your name forever. Selah. |
| 9But now you have rejected and humbled us; you no longer go out with our armies. | 9Yet You have rejected us and brought us to dishonor, And do not go out with our armies. |
| 10You made us retreat before the enemy, and our adversaries have plundered us. | 10You cause us to turn back from the adversary; And those who hate us have taken spoil for themselves. |
| 11You gave us up to be devoured like sheep and have scattered us among the nations. | 11You give us as sheep to be eaten And have scattered us among the nations. |
| 12You sold your people for a pittance, gaining nothing from their sale. | 12You sell Your people cheaply, And have not profited by their sale. |
| 13You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, the scorn and derision of those around us. | 13You make us a reproach to our neighbors, A scoffing and a derision to those around us. |
| 14You have made us a byword among the nations; the peoples shake their heads at us. | 14You make us a byword among the nations, A laughingstock among the peoples. |
| 15I live in disgrace all day long, and my face is covered with shame | 15All day long my dishonor is before me And my humiliation has overwhelmed me, |
| 16at the taunts of those who reproach and revile me, because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge. | 16Because of the voice of him who reproaches and reviles, Because of the presence of the enemy and the avenger. |
| 17All this came upon us, though we had not forgotten you; we had not been false to your covenant. | 17All this has come upon us, but we have not forgotten You, And we have not dealt falsely with Your covenant. |
| 18Our hearts had not turned back; our feet had not strayed from your path. | 18Our heart has not turned back, And our steps have not deviated from Your way, |
| 19But you crushed us and made us a haunt for jackals; you covered us over with deep darkness. | 19Yet You have crushed us in a place of jackals And covered us with the shadow of death. |
| 20If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god, | 20If we had forgotten the name of our God Or extended our hands to a strange god, |
| 21would not God have discovered it, since he knows the secrets of the heart? | 21Would not God find this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart. |
| 22Yet for your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered. | 22But for Your sake we are killed all day long; We are considered as sheep to be slaughtered. |
| 23Awake, Lord! Why do you sleep? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever. | 23Arouse Yourself, why do You sleep, O Lord? Awake, do not reject us forever. |
| 24Why do you hide your face and forget our misery and oppression? | 24Why do You hide Your face And forget our affliction and our oppression? |
| 25We are brought down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground. | 25For our soul has sunk down into the dust; Our body cleaves to the earth. |
| 26Rise up and help us; rescue us because of your unfailing love. | 26Rise up, be our help, And redeem us for the sake of Your lovingkindness. |
