For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A maskil. We have heard it with our ears, O God; our ancestors have told us what you did in their days, in days long ago. | 1For the choir director. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. God, we have heard with our ears-- our ancestors have told us-- the work You accomplished in their days, in days long ago: |
With your hand you drove out the nations and planted our ancestors; you crushed the peoples and made our ancestors flourish. | 2to plant them, You drove out the nations with Your hand; to settle them, You crushed the peoples. |
It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them. | 3For they did not take the land by their sword-- their arm did not bring them victory-- but by Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your face, for You were pleased with them. |
You are my King and my God, who decrees victories for Jacob. | 4You are my King, my God, who ordains victories for Jacob. |
Through you we push back our enemies; through your name we trample our foes. | 5Through You we drive back our foes; through Your name we trample our enemies. |
I put no trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory; | 6For I do not trust in my bow, and my sword does not bring me victory. |
but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame. | 7But You give us victory over our foes and let those who hate us be disgraced. |
In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever. | 8We boast in God all day long; we will praise Your name forever. Selah |
But now you have rejected and humbled us; you no longer go out with our armies. | 9But You have rejected and humiliated us; You do not march out with our armies. |
You made us retreat before the enemy, and our adversaries have plundered us. | 10You make us retreat from the foe, and those who hate us have taken plunder for themselves. |
You gave us up to be devoured like sheep and have scattered us among the nations. | 11You hand us over to be eaten like sheep and scatter us among the nations. |
You sold your people for a pittance, gaining nothing from their sale. | 12You sell Your people for nothing; You make no profit from selling them. |
You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, the scorn and derision of those around us. | 13You make us an object of reproach to our neighbors, a source of mockery and ridicule to those around us. |
You have made us a byword among the nations; the peoples shake their heads at us. | 14You make us a joke among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples. |
I live in disgrace all day long, and my face is covered with shame | 15My disgrace is before me all day long, and shame has covered my face, |
at the taunts of those who reproach and revile me, because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge. | 16because of the voice of the scorner and reviler, because of the enemy and avenger. |
All this came upon us, though we had not forgotten you; we had not been false to your covenant. | 17All this has happened to us, but we have not forgotten You or betrayed Your covenant. |
Our hearts had not turned back; our feet had not strayed from your path. | 18Our hearts have not turned back; our steps have not strayed from Your path. |
But you crushed us and made us a haunt for jackals; you covered us over with deep darkness. | 19But You have crushed us in a haunt of jackals and have covered us with deepest darkness. |
If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god, | 20If we had forgotten the name of our God and spread out our hands to a foreign god, |
would not God have discovered it, since he knows the secrets of the heart? | 21wouldn't God have found this out, since He knows the secrets of the heart? |
Yet for your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered. | 22Because of You we are slain all day long; we are counted as sheep to be slaughtered. |
Awake, Lord! Why do you sleep? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever. | 23Wake up, LORD! Why are You sleeping? Get up! Don't reject us forever! |
Why do you hide your face and forget our misery and oppression? | 24Why do You hide Yourself and forget our affliction and oppression? |
We are brought down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground. | 25For we have sunk down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground. |
Rise up and help us; rescue us because of your unfailing love. | 26Rise up! Help us! Redeem us because of Your faithful love. |
