NET Bible | International Standard Version |
Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ. | 1Imitate me, as I do the Messiah. |
I praise you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions just as I passed them on to you. | 2I praise you for remembering everything I told you and for holding to the traditions that I passed on to you. |
But I want you to know that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ. | 3Now I want you to realize that the Messiah is the head of every man, and man is the head of the woman, and God is the head of the Messiah. |
Any man who prays or prophesies with his head covered disgraces his head. | 4Every man who prays or prophesies with something on his head dishonors his head, |
But any woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered disgraces her head, for it is one and the same thing as having a shaved head. | 5and every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, which is the same as having her head shaved. |
For if a woman will not cover her head, she should cut off her hair. But if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, she should cover her head. | 6So if a woman does not cover her head, she should cut off her hair. If it is a disgrace for a woman to cut off her hair or shave her head, let her cover her own head. |
For a man should not have his head covered, since he is the image and glory of God. But the woman is the glory of the man. | 7A man should not cover his head, because he exists as God's image and glory. But the woman is man's glory. |
For man did not come from woman, but woman from man. | 8For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; |
Neither was man created for the sake of woman, but woman for man. | 9and man was not created for woman, but woman for man. |
For this reason a woman should have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. | 10This is why a woman should have authority over her own head: because of the angels. |
In any case, in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. | 11In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man of woman. |
For just as woman came from man, so man comes through woman. But all things come from God. | 12For as woman came from man, so man comes through woman. But everything comes from God. |
Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? | 13Decide for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? |
Does not nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace for him, | 14Nature itself teaches you neither that it is disgraceful for a man to have long hair |
but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering. | 15nor that hair is a woman's glory, since hair is given as a substitute for coverings. |
If anyone intends to quarrel about this, we have no other practice, nor do the churches of God. | 16But if anyone wants to argue about this, we do not have any custom like this, nor do any of God's churches. |
Now in giving the following instruction I do not praise you, because you come together not for the better but for the worse. | 17Now I am not praising you in giving you the following instructions. When you gather, it is not for the better but for the worse. |
For in the first place, when you come together as a church I hear there are divisions among you, and in part I believe it. | 18For in the first place, I hear that when you gather as a church there are divisions among you, and I partly believe it. |
For there must in fact be divisions among you, so that those of you who are approved may be evident. | 19Of course, there must be factions among you to show which of you are genuine! |
Now when you come together at the same place, you are not really eating the Lord's Supper. | 20When you gather in the same place, it is not to eat the Lord's Supper. |
For when it is time to eat, everyone proceeds with his own supper. One is hungry and another becomes drunk. | 21For as you eat, each of you rushes to eat his own supper, and one person goes hungry while another gets drunk. |
Do you not have houses so that you can eat and drink? Or are you trying to show contempt for the church of God by shaming those who have nothing? What should I say to you? Should I praise you? I will not praise you for this! | 22You have homes in which to eat and drink, don't you? Or do you despise God's church and humiliate those who have nothing? What should I say to you? Should I praise you? I will not praise you for this! |
For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night in which he was betrayed took bread, | 23For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you—how the Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took a loaf of bread, |
and after he had given thanks he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." | 24gave thanks for it, and broke it in pieces, saying, "This is my body that is for you. Keep doing this in memory of me." |
In the same way, he also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, every time you drink it, in remembrance of me." | 25He did the same with the cup after the supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. As often as you drink from it, keep doing this in memory of me." |
For every time you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. | 26For as often as you eat this bread and drink from this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. |
For this reason, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. | 27Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks from the cup in an unworthy manner will be held responsible for the Lord's body and blood. |
A person should examine himself first, and in this way let him eat the bread and drink of the cup. | 28A person must examine himself and then eat the bread and drink from the cup, |
For the one who eats and drinks without careful regard for the body eats and drinks judgment against himself. | 29because whoever eats and drinks without recognizing the body, eats and drinks judgment on himself. |
That is why many of you are weak and sick, and quite a few are dead. | 30That's why so many of you are weak and sick and a considerable number are dying. |
But if we examined ourselves, we would not be judged. | 31But if we judged ourselves correctly, we would not be judged. |
But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned with the world. | 32Now, while we are being judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so we won't be condemned along with the world. |
So then, my brothers and sisters, when you come together to eat, wait for one another. | 33Therefore, my brothers, when you gather to eat, wait for each other. |
If anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, so that when you assemble it does not lead to judgment. I will give directions about other matters when I come. | 34If anyone is hungry, he should eat at home, so that when you gather it may not bring judgment on you. And when I come I will give instructions concerning the other matters. |
