Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, | 1Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God-- |
which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures, | 2the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures |
concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh, | 3regarding his Son, who as to his earthly life was a descendant of David, |
who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord, | 4and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord. |
through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for His name's sake, | 5Through him we received grace and apostleship to call all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith for his name's sake. |
among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ; | 6And you also are among those Gentiles who are called to belong to Jesus Christ. |
to all who are beloved of God in Rome, called as saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. | 7To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be his holy people: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ. |
First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, because your faith is being proclaimed throughout the whole world. | 8First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over the world. |
For God, whom I serve in my spirit in the preaching of the gospel of His Son, is my witness as to how unceasingly I make mention of you, | 9God, whom I serve in my spirit in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you |
always in my prayers making request, if perhaps now at last by the will of God I may succeed in coming to you. | 10in my prayers at all times; and I pray that now at last by God's will the way may be opened for me to come to you. |
For I long to see you so that I may impart some spiritual gift to you, that you may be established; | 11I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong-- |
that is, that I may be encouraged together with you while among you, each of us by the other's faith, both yours and mine. | 12that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith. |
I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that often I have planned to come to you (and have been prevented so far) so that I may obtain some fruit among you also, even as among the rest of the Gentiles. | 13I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that I planned many times to come to you (but have been prevented from doing so until now) in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles. |
I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish. | 14I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish. |
So, for my part, I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome. | 15That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are in Rome. |
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. | 16For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. |
For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "BUT THE RIGHTEOUS man SHALL LIVE BY FAITH." | 17For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed--a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith." |
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, | 18The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, |
because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. | 19since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. |
For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. | 20For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. |
For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. | 21For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. |
Professing to be wise, they became fools, | 22Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools |
and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. | 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles. |
Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. | 24Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. |
For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. | 25They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen. |
For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, | 26Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. |
and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. | 27In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. |
And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, | 28Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. |
being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, | 29They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, |
slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, | 30slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; |
without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; | 31they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. |
and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them. | 32Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them. |
