Now concerning things sacrificed to idols, we know that we all have knowledge.
If anyone supposes that he knows anything, he has not yet known as he ought to know;2εἴ τις δοκεῖ ἐγνωκέναι τι οὔπω ἔγνω καθὼς δεῖ γνῶναι
but if anyone loves God, he is known by Him.3εἰ δέ τις ἀγαπᾷ τὸν Θεόν οὗτος ἔγνωσται ὑπ’ αὐτοῦ
Therefore concerning the eating of things sacrificed to idols, we know that there is no such thing as an idol in the world, and that there is no God but one.4Περὶ τῆς βρώσεως οὖν τῶν εἰδωλοθύτων οἴδαμεν ὅτι οὐδὲν εἴδωλον ἐν κόσμῳ καὶ ὅτι οὐδεὶς Θεὸς εἰ μὴ εἷς
For even if there are so-called gods whether in heaven or on earth, as indeed there are many gods and many lords,5καὶ γὰρ εἴπερ εἰσὶν λεγόμενοι θεοὶ εἴτε ἐν οὐρανῷ εἴτε ἐπὶ γῆς ὥσπερ εἰσὶν θεοὶ πολλοὶ καὶ κύριοι πολλοί
yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him.6ἀλλ’ ἡμῖν εἷς Θεὸς Πατήρ ἐξ οὗ τὰ πάντα καὶ ἡμεῖς εἰς αὐτόν καὶ εἷς Κύριος Ἰησοῦς Χριστός δι’ οὗ τὰ πάντα καὶ ἡμεῖς δι’ αὐτοῦ
However not all men have this knowledge; but some, being accustomed to the idol until now, eat food as if it were sacrificed to an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.7Ἀλλ’ οὐκ ἐν πᾶσιν γνῶσις τινὲς δὲ τῇ συνηθείᾳ ἕως ἄρτι τοῦ εἰδώλου ὡς εἰδωλόθυτον ἐσθίουσιν καὶ συνείδησις αὐτῶν ἀσθενὴς οὖσα μολύνεται
But food will not commend us to God; we are neither the worse if we do not eat, nor the better if we do eat.8βρῶμα δὲ ἡμᾶς οὐ παραστήσει τῷ Θεῷ οὔτε ἐὰν μὴ φάγωμεν ὑστερούμεθα οὔτε ἐὰν ‹μὴ› φάγωμεν περισσεύομεν
But take care that this liberty of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak.9Βλέπετε δὲ μή πως ἐξουσία ὑμῶν αὕτη πρόσκομμα γένηται τοῖς ἀσθενέσιν
For if someone sees you, who have knowledge, dining in an idol's temple, will not his conscience, if he is weak, be strengthened to eat things sacrificed to idols?10ἐὰν γάρ τις ἴδῃ σὲ τὸν ἔχοντα γνῶσιν ἐν εἰδωλείῳ κατακείμενον οὐχὶ συνείδησις αὐτοῦ ἀσθενοῦς ὄντος οἰκοδομηθήσεται εἰς τὸ τὰ εἰδωλόθυτα ἐσθίειν
For through your knowledge he who is weak is ruined, the brother for whose sake Christ died.11ἀπόλλυται γὰρ ἀσθενῶν ἐν τῇ σῇ γνώσει ἀδελφὸς δι’ ὃν Χριστὸς ἀπέθανεν
And so, by sinning against the brethren and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ.12οὕτως δὲ ἁμαρτάνοντες εἰς τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς καὶ τύπτοντες αὐτῶν τὴν συνείδησιν ἀσθενοῦσαν εἰς Χριστὸν ἁμαρτάνετε
Therefore, if food causes my brother to stumble, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause my brother to stumble.13Διόπερ εἰ βρῶμα σκανδαλίζει τὸν ἀδελφόν μου οὐ μὴ φάγω κρέα εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ἵνα μὴ τὸν ἀδελφόν μου σκανδαλίσω
