And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease. | 1Then Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority over unclean spirits, so that they could drive them out and heal every disease and every illness. |
Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; | 2These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John; |
Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; | 3Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James, the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; |
Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him. | 4Simon the Cananaean and Judas Iscariot, who later betrayed Jesus. |
These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: | 5These were the Twelve whom Jesus sent out after he had given them these instructions: "Don't turn on to the road that leads to the unbelievers, and don't enter Samaritan towns. |
But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. | 6Instead, go to the lost sheep of the nation of Israel. |
And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. | 7As you go, make this announcement: 'The kingdom from heaven is near!' |
Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give. | 8Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, drive out demons. You have received without payment, so give without payment. |
Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses, | 9Don't take any gold, silver, or copper in your moneybags, |
Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat. | 10or a traveling bag for the trip, or an extra shirt, or sandals, or a walking stick, because a worker deserves his food. |
And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, inquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence. | 11"Whatever town or village you enter, find out who is receptive in it and stay there until you leave. |
And when ye come into an house, salute it. | 12As you enter the house, greet its occupants. |
And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you. | 13If the household is receptive, let your blessing of peace come on it. But if it isn't receptive, let your blessing of peace return to you. |
And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet. | 14If no one welcomes you or listens to your words, as you leave that house or town, shake its dust off your feet. |
Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city. | 15I tell all of you with certainty, it will be more bearable for the region of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town!" |
Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. | 16"Pay attention, now! I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. So be as cunning as serpents and as innocent as doves. |
But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues; | 17Watch out for people who will hand you over to the local councils and whip you in their synagogues. |
And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles. | 18You will be brought before governors and kings because of me, to testify to them and to unbelievers. |
But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. | 19When they hand you over, don't worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say, because in that hour what you are to say will be given to you. |
For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you. | 20It won't be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. |
And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death. | 21"Brother will hand brother over for execution, and a father his child. Children will rebel against parents and have them put to death. |
And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved. | 22You will be hated by everyone because of my name. But the person who endures to the end will be saved. |
But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come. | 23So when they persecute you in one town, flee to the next, because I tell all of you with certainty that you will not have gone through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes. |
The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord. | 24"A disciple is not above his teacher, and a slave is not above his master. |
It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household? | 25It is enough for a disciple to be like his teacher and a slave to be like his master. If they have called the head of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they do the same to those of his household!" |
Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known. | 26"So never be afraid of them, because there is nothing hidden that will not be revealed, and nothing secret that will not be made known. |
What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops. | 27What I tell you in darkness you must speak in the daylight, and what is whispered in your ear you must shout from the housetops. |
And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. | 28Stop being afraid of those who kill the body but can't kill the soul. Instead, be afraid of the one who can destroy both body and soul in hell. |
Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. | 29"Two sparrows are sold for a penny, aren't they? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground without your Father's permission. |
But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. | 30Indeed, even the hairs on your head have all been counted! |
Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows. | 31So stop being afraid. You are worth more than a bunch of sparrows." |
Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. | 32"Therefore, everyone who acknowledges me before people I, too, will acknowledge before my Father in heaven. |
But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven. | 33But whoever denies me before people I, too, will deny before my Father in heaven." |
Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. | 34"Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword! |
For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. | 35I came to turn 'a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. |
And a man's foes shall be they of his own household. | 36A person's enemies will include members of his own family.' |
He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. | 37"The one who loves his father or mother more than me isn't worthy of me, and the one who loves a son or daughter more than me isn't worthy of me. |
And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. | 38The one who doesn't take up his cross and follow me isn't worthy of me. |
He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it. | 39The one who finds his life will lose it, and the one who loses his life because of me will find it." |
He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me. | 40"The one who receives you receives me, and the one who receives me receives the one who sent me. |
He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward. | 41The one who receives a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and the one who receives a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person's reward. |
And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward. | 42I tell all of you with certainty, whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is a disciple will never lose his reward." |
