When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. | 1When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. |
And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. | 2Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. |
And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. | 3They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. |
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. | 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. |
Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. | 5Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. |
And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. | 6When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. |
And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? | 7Utterly amazed, they asked: "Aren't all these who are speaking Galileans? |
And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? | 8Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? |
Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, | 9Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, |
Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, | 10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome |
both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” | 11(both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs--we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!" |
And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” | 12Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does this mean?" |
But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.” | 13Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They have had too much wine." |
But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. | 14Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. |
For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. | 15These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the morning! |
But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel: | 16No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: |
“‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; | 17"'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. |
even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy. | 18Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. |
And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke; | 19I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. |
the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day. | 20The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. |
And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’ | 21And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.' |
“Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— | 22"Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. |
this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. | 23This man was handed over to you by God's deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. |
God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. | 24But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. |
For David says concerning him, “‘I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken; | 25David said about him: "'I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. |
therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; my flesh also will dwell in hope. | 26Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest in hope, |
For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption. | 27because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, you will not let your holy one see decay. |
You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’ | 28You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.' |
“Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. | 29"Fellow Israelites, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day. |
Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, | 30But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. |
he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. | 31Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay. |
This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. | 32God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it. |
Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. | 33Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. |
For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, “‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, | 34For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said, "'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand |
until I make your enemies your footstool.”’ | 35until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet."' |
Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.” | 36"Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah." |
Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” | 37When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?" |
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. | 38Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. |
For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” | 39The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off--for all whom the Lord our God will call." |
And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” | 40With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation." |
So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls. | 41Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. |
And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. | 42They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. |
And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. | 43Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. |
And all who believed were together and had all things in common. | 44All the believers were together and had everything in common. |
And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. | 45They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. |
And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, | 46Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, |
praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. | 47praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. |
