The Soldiers Mock Jesus
(Matthew 27:27–31; Mark 15:16–20; Luke 22:63–65)

1Then Pilate, therefore, took Jesus, and scourged Him. 2And the soldiers, having platted a crown of thorns, placed it upon his head, and put on Him a purple robe; 3and they kept coming to Him, and saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" And they were giving Him blows with a rod. 4And Pilate went out again, and says to them, "Behold, I bring Him out to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in Him." 5Jesus, therefore, came forth without, wearing the thorn-crown, and the purple robe. And he says to them, "Behold, the Man!" 6When, therefore, the high priests and the officers saw Him, they cried out, "Crucify! crucify!" Pilate says to them, "Take ye Him, and crucify Him; for I find not a crime in Him." 7The Jews, therefore, answered him, "We have a law, and according to the law He ought to die, because He made Himself God's Son."

8When, therefore, Pilate heard this saying, he was the more afraid; 9and he entered again into the Praetorium, and says to Jesus, "Whence art Thou?" But Jesus gave him no answer. 10Pilate, therefore, says to Him, "Dost Thou not speak to me? Knowest Thou not that I have authority to release Thee, and have authority to crucify Thee?" 11Jesus answered him, "You would have no authority against Me, unless it were given to you from above; on this account, he who delivered Me up to you has greater sin." 12In consequence of this, Pilate was seeking to release Him; but the Jews cried out, saying, "If you release this Man, you are not Caesar's friend; every one who makes himself a king speaks against Caesar."

13Pilate, therefore, having heard these words, led Jesus without, and sat down on the judgment-seat at a place called the "Pavement," but, in Hebrew, "Gabbatha." 14And it was the Preparation of the passover: it was about the sixth hour. And he says to the Jews, "Behold, your King!" 15They, therefore, cried out, "Away with Him! away with Him! Crucify Him!" Pilate says to them, "Shall I crucify your King?" The high priests answered, We have no king but Caesar!"

The Crucifixion
(Matthew 27:32–44; Mark 15:21–32; Luke 23:26–43)

16Then, therefore, he delivered Him up to them to be crucified.

17They took Jesus, therefore; and, bearing the cross for Himself, He went forth into the place called "Place of a Skull," which, in Hebrew, is called "Golgotha;" 18where they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on each side, and Jesus in the midst. 19And Pilate wrote a title also, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, "JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS." 20This title, therefore, many of the Jews read; because the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, in Greek. 21The high priests of the Jews, therefore, said to Pilate, "Write not, 'The King of the Jews,' but that He said, I am King of the Jews." 22Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written."

23The soldiers, therefore, when they crucified Jesus, took His garments, and made four parts, to each soldier a part; and also the coat. And the coat was without a seam, woven from the top throughout. 24They said, therefore, one to another, "Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be; that the Scripture might be fulfilled, which says, 'They divided My garments among themselves, and upon My vesture did they cast lots.'" The soldiers, therefore, did these things. 25But there were standing by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26Jesus, therefore, seeing His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, saith to His mother, "Woman, behold your Son!" 27Then saith He to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.

The Death of Jesus
(Matthew 27:45–56; Mark 15:33–41; Luke 23:44–49)

28After these things Jesus, knowing that all things have now been finished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, saith, "I thirst." 29There was set there a vessel full of vinegar; so, putting a sponge full of vinegar on hyssop, they bore it to His mouth. 30When, therefore, Jesus received the vinegar, He said, "It has been finished;" and, bowing His head, He delivered up His spirit.

Jesus’ Side Is Pierced

31The Jews, therefore, (since it was the Preparation), that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath, (for the day of that sabbath was great), asked of Pilate that their legs might be broken, and they be taken away. 32The soldiers, therefore, came, and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who was crucified with Him; 33but, when they came to Jesus, and saw that He was already dead, they broke not His legs; 34but one of the soldiers with a spear pierced His side, and straightway there came out blood and water. 35And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he says what is true, that ye also may believe. 36For these things came to pass, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, "A bone of Him shall not be broken." 37And again another Scripture says, "They shall look on Him Whom they pierced."

The Burial of Jesus
(Matthew 27:57–61; Mark 15:42–47; Luke 23:50–56)

38And after these things Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly through fear of the Jews, asked of Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. He came, therefore, and took away His body. 39And there came also Nicodemus, he who at the first came to Him by night, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. 40So they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as the custom of Jews is to bury. 41Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had yet been laid. 42There, therefore, on account of the Preparation of the Jews (because the tomb was near), they laid Jesus.
