Jesus entered Jericho and made his way through the town. | 1He entered Jericho and was passing through. |
There was a man there named Zacchaeus. He was the chief tax collector in the region, and he had become very rich. | 2And there was a man called by the name of Zaccheus; he was a chief tax collector and he was rich. |
He tried to get a look at Jesus, but he was too short to see over the crowd. | 3Zaccheus was trying to see who Jesus was, and was unable because of the crowd, for he was small in stature. |
So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree beside the road, for Jesus was going to pass that way. | 4So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree in order to see Him, for He was about to pass through that way. |
When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. “Zacchaeus!” he said. “Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.” | 5When Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, "Zaccheus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house." |
Zacchaeus quickly climbed down and took Jesus to his house in great excitement and joy. | 6And he hurried and came down and received Him gladly. |
But the people were displeased. “He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner,” they grumbled. | 7When they saw it, they all began to grumble, saying, "He has gone to be the guest of a man who is a sinner." |
Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, “I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!” | 8Zaccheus stopped and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, half of my possessions I will give to the poor, and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will give back four times as much." |
Jesus responded, “Salvation has come to this home today, for this man has shown himself to be a true son of Abraham. | 9And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he, too, is a son of Abraham. |
For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.” Parable of the Ten Servants | 10"For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost." |
The crowd was listening to everything Jesus said. And because he was nearing Jerusalem, he told them a story to correct the impression that the Kingdom of God would begin right away. | 11While they were listening to these things, Jesus went on to tell a parable, because He was near Jerusalem, and they supposed that the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately. |
He said, “A nobleman was called away to a distant empire to be crowned king and then return. | 12So He said, "A nobleman went to a distant country to receive a kingdom for himself, and then return. |
Before he left, he called together ten of his servants and divided among them ten pounds of silver, saying, ‘Invest this for me while I am gone.’ | 13"And he called ten of his slaves, and gave them ten minas and said to them, 'Do business with this until I come back.' |
But his people hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We do not want him to be our king.’ | 14"But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, 'We do not want this man to reign over us.' |
“After he was crowned king, he returned and called in the servants to whom he had given the money. He wanted to find out what their profits were. | 15"When he returned, after receiving the kingdom, he ordered that these slaves, to whom he had given the money, be called to him so that he might know what business they had done. |
The first servant reported, ‘Master, I invested your money and made ten times the original amount!’ | 16"The first appeared, saying, 'Master, your mina has made ten minas more.' |
“‘Well done!’ the king exclaimed. ‘You are a good servant. You have been faithful with the little I entrusted to you, so you will be governor of ten cities as your reward.’ | 17"And he said to him, 'Well done, good slave, because you have been faithful in a very little thing, you are to be in authority over ten cities.' |
“The next servant reported, ‘Master, I invested your money and made five times the original amount.’ | 18"The second came, saying, 'Your mina, master, has made five minas.' |
“‘Well done!’ the king said. ‘You will be governor over five cities.’ | 19"And he said to him also, 'And you are to be over five cities.' |
“But the third servant brought back only the original amount of money and said, ‘Master, I hid your money and kept it safe. | 20"Another came, saying, 'Master, here is your mina, which I kept put away in a handkerchief; |
I was afraid because you are a hard man to deal with, taking what isn’t yours and harvesting crops you didn’t plant.’ | 21for I was afraid of you, because you are an exacting man; you take up what you did not lay down and reap what you did not sow.' |
“‘You wicked servant!’ the king roared. ‘Your own words condemn you. If you knew that I’m a hard man who takes what isn’t mine and harvests crops I didn’t plant, | 22"He said to him, 'By your own words I will judge you, you worthless slave. Did you know that I am an exacting man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow? |
why didn’t you deposit my money in the bank? At least I could have gotten some interest on it.’ | 23'Then why did you not put my money in the bank, and having come, I would have collected it with interest?' |
“Then, turning to the others standing nearby, the king ordered, ‘Take the money from this servant, and give it to the one who has ten pounds.’ | 24"Then he said to the bystanders, 'Take the mina away from him and give it to the one who has the ten minas.' |
“‘But, master,’ they said, ‘he already has ten pounds!’ | 25"And they said to him, 'Master, he has ten minas already.' |
“‘Yes,’ the king replied, ‘and to those who use well what they are given, even more will be given. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away. | 26"I tell you that to everyone who has, more shall be given, but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away. |
And as for these enemies of mine who didn’t want me to be their king—bring them in and execute them right here in front of me.’” Jesus’ Triumphant Entry | 27"But these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slay them in my presence." |
After telling this story, Jesus went on toward Jerusalem, walking ahead of his disciples. | 28After He had said these things, He was going on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. |
As he came to the towns of Bethphage and Bethany on the Mount of Olives, he sent two disciples ahead. | 29When He approached Bethphage and Bethany, near the mount that is called Olivet, He sent two of the disciples, |
“Go into that village over there,” he told them. “As you enter it, you will see a young donkey tied there that no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. | 30saying, "Go into the village ahead of you; there, as you enter, you will find a colt tied on which no one yet has ever sat; untie it and bring it here. |
If anyone asks, ‘Why are you untying that colt?’ just say, ‘The Lord needs it.’” | 31"If anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' you shall say, 'The Lord has need of it.'" |
So they went and found the colt, just as Jesus had said. | 32So those who were sent went away and found it just as He had told them. |
And sure enough, as they were untying it, the owners asked them, “Why are you untying that colt?” | 33As they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, "Why are you untying the colt?" |
And the disciples simply replied, “The Lord needs it.” | 34They said, "The Lord has need of it." |
So they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their garments over it for him to ride on. | 35They brought it to Jesus, and they threw their coats on the colt and put Jesus on it. |
As he rode along, the crowds spread out their garments on the road ahead of him. | 36As He was going, they were spreading their coats on the road. |
When he reached the place where the road started down the Mount of Olives, all of his followers began to shout and sing as they walked along, praising God for all the wonderful miracles they had seen. | 37As soon as He was approaching, near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles which they had seen, |
“Blessings on the King who comes in the name of the LORD! Peace in heaven, and glory in highest heaven!” | 38shouting: "BLESSED IS THE KING WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD; Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!" |
But some of the Pharisees among the crowd said, “Teacher, rebuke your followers for saying things like that!” | 39Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, "Teacher, rebuke Your disciples." |
He replied, “If they kept quiet, the stones along the road would burst into cheers!” Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem | 40But Jesus answered, "I tell you, if these become silent, the stones will cry out!" |
But as he came closer to Jerusalem and saw the city ahead, he began to weep. | 41When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and wept over it, |
“How I wish today that you of all people would understand the way to peace. But now it is too late, and peace is hidden from your eyes. | 42saying, "If you had known in this day, even you, the things which make for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes. |
Before long your enemies will build ramparts against your walls and encircle you and close in on you from every side. | 43"For the days will come upon you when your enemies will throw up a barricade against you, and surround you and hem you in on every side, |
They will crush you into the ground, and your children with you. Your enemies will not leave a single stone in place, because you did not recognize it when God visited you. ” Jesus Clears the Temple | 44and they will level you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation." |
Then Jesus entered the Temple and began to drive out the people selling animals for sacrifices. | 45Jesus entered the temple and began to drive out those who were selling, |
He said to them, “The Scriptures declare, ‘My Temple will be a house of prayer,’ but you have turned it into a den of thieves.” | 46saying to them, "It is written, 'AND MY HOUSE SHALL BE A HOUSE OF PRAYER,' but you have made it a ROBBERS' DEN." |
After that, he taught daily in the Temple, but the leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the other leaders of the people began planning how to kill him. | 47And He was teaching daily in the temple; but the chief priests and the scribes and the leading men among the people were trying to destroy Him, |
But they could think of nothing, because all the people hung on every word he said. | 48and they could not find anything that they might do, for all the people were hanging on to every word He said. |
