When Jesus had finished saying all this to the people, he returned to Capernaum. | 1After Jesus had finished saying all these things to the people who were there listening, he went to Capernaum. |
At that time the highly valued slave of a Roman officer was sick and near death. | 2There a centurion's servant, whom he valued highly, was sick and about to die. |
When the officer heard about Jesus, he sent some respected Jewish elders to ask him to come and heal his slave. | 3When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to him to ask him to come and save his servant's life. |
So they earnestly begged Jesus to help the man. “If anyone deserves your help, he does,” they said, | 4So they went to Jesus and begged him repeatedly, "He deserves to have this done for him, |
“for he loves the Jewish people and even built a synagogue for us.” | 5because he loves our people and built our synagogue for us." |
So Jesus went with them. But just before they arrived at the house, the officer sent some friends to say, “Lord, don’t trouble yourself by coming to my home, for I am not worthy of such an honor. | 6So Jesus went with them. He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to tell Jesus, "Sir, stop troubling yourself, because I'm not worthy to have you come under my roof. |
I am not even worthy to come and meet you. Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed. | 7That's why I didn't presume to come to you. But just say the word, and let my servant be healed, |
I know this because I am under the authority of my superior officers, and I have authority over my soldiers. I only need to say, ‘Go,’ and they go, or ‘Come,’ and they come. And if I say to my slaves, ‘Do this,’ they do it.” | 8because I, too, am a man under authority and have soldiers under me. I say to one 'Go' and he goes, to another 'Come' and he comes, and to my servant 'Do this' and he does it." |
When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to the crowd that was following him, he said, “I tell you, I haven’t seen faith like this in all Israel!” | 9When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him. Turning to the crowd that was following him, he said, "I tell you, not even in Israel have I found this kind of faith!" |
And when the officer’s friends returned to his house, they found the slave completely healed. Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son | 10Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant in perfect health. |
Soon afterward Jesus went with his disciples to the village of Nain, and a large crowd followed him. | 11Soon afterwards, Jesus went to a city called Nain. His disciples and a large crowd were going along with him. |
A funeral procession was coming out as he approached the village gate. The young man who had died was a widow’s only son, and a large crowd from the village was with her. | 12As he approached the entrance to the city, a man who had died was being carried out. He was his mother's only son, and she was a widow. A large crowd from the city was with her. |
When the Lord saw her, his heart overflowed with compassion. “Don’t cry!” he said. | 13When the Lord saw her, he felt compassion for her. He told her, "You can stop crying." |
Then he walked over to the coffin and touched it, and the bearers stopped. “Young man,” he said, “I tell you, get up.” | 14Then he went up and touched the bier, and the men who were carrying it stopped. He said, "Young man, I say to you, get up!" |
Then the dead boy sat up and began to talk! And Jesus gave him back to his mother. | 15The man who had been dead sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him back to his mother. |
Great fear swept the crowd, and they praised God, saying, “A mighty prophet has risen among us,” and “God has visited his people today.” | 16Fear gripped everyone, and they began to praise God. "A great prophet has appeared among us," they said, and "God has helped his people." |
And the news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding countryside. Jesus and John the Baptist | 17This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and all the surrounding countryside. |
The disciples of John the Baptist told John about everything Jesus was doing. So John called for two of his disciples, | 18John's disciples told him about all these things. So John called two of his disciples |
and he sent them to the Lord to ask him, “Are you the Messiah we’ve been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?” | 19and sent them to the Lord to ask, "Are you the Coming One, or should we wait for someone else?" |
John’s two disciples found Jesus and said to him, “John the Baptist sent us to ask, ‘Are you the Messiah we’ve been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?’” | 20When the men had come to Jesus, they said, "John the Baptist has sent us to you to ask, 'Are you the Coming One, or should we wait for someone else?'" |
At that very time, Jesus cured many people of their diseases, illnesses, and evil spirits, and he restored sight to many who were blind. | 21At that time Jesus had healed many people of diseases, plagues, and evil spirits, and had given sight to many who were blind. |
Then he told John’s disciples, “Go back to John and tell him what you have seen and heard—the blind see, the lame walk, those with leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is being preached to the poor.” | 22So he answered them, "Go and tell John what you have observed and heard: the blind see, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear again, the dead are raised, and the destitute hear the good news. |
And he added, “God blesses those who do not fall away because of me. ” | 23How blessed is anyone who is not offended by me!" |
After John’s disciples left, Jesus began talking about him to the crowds. “What kind of man did you go into the wilderness to see? Was he a weak reed, swayed by every breath of wind? | 24When John's messengers had gone, Jesus began to ask the crowds about John. "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? |
Or were you expecting to see a man dressed in expensive clothes? No, people who wear beautiful clothes and live in luxury are found in palaces. | 25Really, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fancy clothes? Look! Those who wear fine clothes and live in luxury are in royal palaces. |
Were you looking for a prophet? Yes, and he is more than a prophet. | 26Really, what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and even more than a prophet! |
John is the man to whom the Scriptures refer when they say, ‘Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, and he will prepare your way before you.’ | 27This is the man about whom it is written, 'See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.' |
I tell you, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John. Yet even the least person in the Kingdom of God is greater than he is!” | 28I tell you, no one has ever been born who is greater than John. Yet even the least important person in the kingdom of God is greater than he." |
When they heard this, all the people—even the tax collectors—agreed that God’s way was right, for they had been baptized by John. | 29By having been baptized with John's baptism, all the people who listened, including the tax collectors, acknowledged God's justice. |
But the Pharisees and experts in religious law rejected God’s plan for them, for they had refused John’s baptism. | 30But the Pharisees and the experts in the Law rejected God's plan for themselves by refusing to be baptized by John. |
“To what can I compare the people of this generation?” Jesus asked. “How can I describe them? | 31Jesus continued, "To what may I compare the people living today? |
They are like children playing a game in the public square. They complain to their friends, ‘We played wedding songs, and you didn’t dance, so we played funeral songs, and you didn’t weep.’ | 32They're like little children who sit in the marketplace and shout to each other, 'A wedding song we played for you, the dance you all did scorn. A woeful dirge we chanted, too, but then you would not mourn.' |
For John the Baptist didn’t spend his time eating bread or drinking wine, and you say, ‘He’s possessed by a demon.’ | 33Because John the Baptist has come neither eating bread nor drinking wine, yet you say, 'He has a demon!' |
The Son of Man, on the other hand, feasts and drinks, and you say, ‘He’s a glutton and a drunkard, and a friend of tax collectors and other sinners!’ | 34The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, 'Look! He's a glutton and a drunk, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' |
But wisdom is shown to be right by the lives of those who follow it. ” Jesus Anointed by a Sinful Woman | 35Wisdom is vindicated by all her children." |
One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to have dinner with him, so Jesus went to his home and sat down to eat. | 36Now one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to eat with him. So he went to the Pharisee's home and took his place at the table. |
When a certain immoral woman from that city heard he was eating there, she brought a beautiful alabaster jar filled with expensive perfume. | 37There was a woman who was a notorious sinner in that city. When she learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee's home, she took an alabaster jar of perfume |
Then she knelt behind him at his feet, weeping. Her tears fell on his feet, and she wiped them off with her hair. Then she kept kissing his feet and putting perfume on them. | 38and knelt at his feet behind him. She was crying and began to wash his feet with her tears and dry them with her hair. Then she kissed his feet over and over again, anointing them constantly with the perfume. |
When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know what kind of woman is touching him. She’s a sinner!” | 39Now the Pharisee who had invited Jesus saw this and told himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would have known who is touching him and what kind of woman she is. She's a sinner!" |
Then Jesus answered his thoughts. “Simon,” he said to the Pharisee, “I have something to say to you.” “Go ahead, Teacher,” Simon replied. | 40Jesus told him, "Simon, I have something to ask you." "Teacher," he replied, "ask it." |
Then Jesus told him this story: “A man loaned money to two people—500 pieces of silver to one and 50 pieces to the other. | 41"Two men were in debt to a moneylender. One owed him 500 denarii, and the other 50. |
But neither of them could repay him, so he kindly forgave them both, canceling their debts. Who do you suppose loved him more after that?” | 42When they couldn't pay it back, he generously canceled the debts for both of them. Now which of them will love him more?" |
Simon answered, “I suppose the one for whom he canceled the larger debt.” “That’s right,” Jesus said. | 43Simon answered, "I suppose the one who had the larger debt canceled." Jesus told him, "You have answered correctly." |
Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Look at this woman kneeling here. When I entered your home, you didn’t offer me water to wash the dust from my feet, but she has washed them with her tears and wiped them with her hair. | 44Then, turning to the woman, he told Simon, "Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You didn't give me any water for my feet, but this woman has washed my feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. |
You didn’t greet me with a kiss, but from the time I first came in, she has not stopped kissing my feet. | 45You didn't give me a kiss, but this woman, from the moment I came in, has not stopped kissing my feet. |
You neglected the courtesy of olive oil to anoint my head, but she has anointed my feet with rare perfume. | 46You didn't anoint my head with oil, but this woman has anointed my feet with perfume. |
“I tell you, her sins—and they are many—have been forgiven, so she has shown me much love. But a person who is forgiven little shows only little love.” | 47So I'm telling you that her sins, as many as they are, have been forgiven, and that's why she has shown such great love. But the one to whom little is forgiven loves little." |
Then Jesus said to the woman, “Your sins are forgiven.” | 48Then Jesus told her, "Your sins are forgiven!" |
The men at the table said among themselves, “Who is this man, that he goes around forgiving sins?” | 49Those who were at the table with them began to say among themselves, "Who is this man who even forgives sins?" |
And Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” | 50But Jesus told the woman, "Your faith has saved you. Go in peace." |
