Then Pilate had Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip. | 1Then Pilate had Jesus taken away and whipped. |
The soldiers wove a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they put a purple robe on him. | 2The soldiers twisted some thorns into a victor's crown, put it on his head, and threw a purple robe on him. |
“Hail! King of the Jews!” they mocked, as they slapped him across the face. | 3They kept coming up to him and saying, "Long live the king of the Jews!" Then they began to slap him on the face. |
Pilate went outside again and said to the people, “I am going to bring him out to you now, but understand clearly that I find him not guilty.” | 4Pilate went outside again and told the Jews, "Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him." |
Then Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said, “Look, here is the man!” | 5Then Jesus came outside, wearing the victor's crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate told them, "Here is the man!" |
When they saw him, the leading priests and Temple guards began shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!” “Take him yourselves and crucify him,” Pilate said. “I find him not guilty.” | 6When the high priests and the officials saw him, they shouted, "Crucify him! Crucify him!" Pilate told them, "You take him and crucify him. I find no basis for a charge against him." |
The Jewish leaders replied, “By our law he ought to die because he called himself the Son of God.” | 7The Jewish leaders answered Pilate, "We have a law, and according to that Law he must die because he made himself out to be the Son of God." |
When Pilate heard this, he was more frightened than ever. | 8When Pilate heard this, he became even more afraid. |
He took Jesus back into the headquarters again and asked him, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave no answer. | 9Returning to his headquarters, he asked Jesus, "Where are you from?" But Jesus did not answer him. |
“Why don’t you talk to me?” Pilate demanded. “Don’t you realize that I have the power to release you or crucify you?” | 10So Pilate asked him, "Aren't you going to speak to me? You realize, don't you, that I have the authority to release you and the authority to crucify you?" |
Then Jesus said, “You would have no power over me at all unless it were given to you from above. So the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.” | 11Jesus answered him, "You have no authority over me at all, except what was given to you from above. That's why the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin." |
Then Pilate tried to release him, but the Jewish leaders shouted, “If you release this man, you are no ‘friend of Caesar.’ Anyone who declares himself a king is a rebel against Caesar.” | 12From then on, Pilate tried to release him, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, "If you release this fellow, you're not a friend of Caesar! Anyone who claims to be a king is defying Caesar!" |
When they said this, Pilate brought Jesus out to them again. Then Pilate sat down on the judgment seat on the platform that is called the Stone Pavement (in Hebrew, Gabbatha ). | 13When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus outside and sat down on the judgment seat in a place called The Pavement, which in Hebrew is called Gabbatha. |
It was now about noon on the day of preparation for the Passover. And Pilate said to the people, “Look, here is your king!” | 14Now it was the Preparation Day for the Passover, about noon. He told the Jewish leaders, "Here is your king!" |
“Away with him,” they yelled. “Away with him! Crucify him!” “What? Crucify your king?” Pilate asked. “We have no king but Caesar,” the leading priests shouted back. | 15Then they shouted, "Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!" Pilate asked them, "Should I crucify your king?" The high priests responded, "We have no king but Caesar!" |
Then Pilate turned Jesus over to them to be crucified. The Crucifixion So they took Jesus away. | 16Then Pilate handed him over to be crucified, and they took Jesus away. |
Carrying the cross by himself, he went to the place called Place of the Skull (in Hebrew, Golgotha ). | 17Carrying the cross all by himself, he went out to what is called The Place of a Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha. |
There they nailed him to the cross. Two others were crucified with him, one on either side, with Jesus between them. | 18There they crucified him, along with two others, one on each side of him with Jesus in the middle. |
And Pilate posted a sign on the cross that read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” | 19Pilate wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, "Jesus from Nazareth, the King of the Jews." |
The place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek, so that many people could read it. | 20Many Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city. It was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. |
Then the leading priests objected and said to Pilate, “Change it from ‘The King of the Jews’ to ‘He said, I am King of the Jews.’” | 21Then the Jewish high priests told Pilate, "Don't write, 'The King of the Jews,' but that this fellow said, 'I am the King of the Jews.'" |
Pilate replied, “No, what I have written, I have written.” | 22Pilate replied, "What I have written I have written." |
When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they divided his clothes among the four of them. They also took his robe, but it was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. | 23When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, one for each soldier, and took his cloak as well. The cloak was seamless, woven in one piece from the top down. |
So they said, “Rather than tearing it apart, let’s throw dice for it.” This fulfilled the Scripture that says, “They divided my garments among themselves and threw dice for my clothing.” So that is what they did. | 24So they told each other, "Let's not tear it. Instead, let's throw dice to see who gets it." This was to fulfill the Scripture that says, "They divided my clothes among themselves, and for my clothing they threw dice." So that is what the soldiers did. |
Standing near the cross were Jesus’ mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary (the wife of Clopas), and Mary Magdalene. | 25Meanwhile, standing near Jesus' cross were his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. |
When Jesus saw his mother standing there beside the disciple he loved, he said to her, “Dear woman, here is your son.” | 26When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he kept loving standing there, he told his mother, "Dear lady, here is your son." |
And he said to this disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from then on this disciple took her into his home. The Death of Jesus | 27Then he told the disciple, "Here is your mother." And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home. |
Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said, “I am thirsty.” | 28After this, when Jesus realized that everything was now completed, he said (in order to fulfill the Scripture), "I'm thirsty." |
A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips. | 29A jar of sour wine was standing there, so they put a sponge full of the wine on a branch of hyssop and held it to his mouth. |
When Jesus had tasted it, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. | 30After Jesus had taken the wine, he said, "It is finished." Then he bowed his head and released his spirit. |
It was the day of preparation, and the Jewish leaders didn’t want the bodies hanging there the next day, which was the Sabbath (and a very special Sabbath, because it was Passover week). So they asked Pilate to hasten their deaths by ordering that their legs be broken. Then their bodies could be taken down. | 31Since it was the Preparation Day, the Jewish leaders did not want to leave the bodies on the crosses during the Sabbath, because that was a particularly important Sabbath. So they asked Pilate to have the men's legs broken and the bodies removed. |
So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the two men crucified with Jesus. | 32So the soldiers went and broke the legs of the first man and then of the other man who had been crucified with him. |
But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was already dead, so they didn’t break his legs. | 33But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. |
One of the soldiers, however, pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water flowed out. | 34Instead, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and blood and water immediately came out. |
(This report is from an eyewitness giving an accurate account. He speaks the truth so that you also may continue to believe. ) | 35The one who saw this has testified, and his testimony is true. He knows he is telling the truth so that you, too, may believe, |
These things happened in fulfillment of the Scriptures that say, “Not one of his bones will be broken,” | 36because these things happened so that the Scripture might be fulfilled: "None of his bones will be broken." |
and “They will look on the one they pierced.” The Burial of Jesus | 37In addition, another passage of Scripture says, "They will look on the one whom they pierced." |
Afterward Joseph of Arimathea, who had been a secret disciple of Jesus (because he feared the Jewish leaders), asked Pilate for permission to take down Jesus’ body. When Pilate gave permission, Joseph came and took the body away. | 38Later on, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus (though a secret one because he was afraid of the Jewish leaders), asked Pilate to let him remove the body of Jesus. Pilate gave him permission, and he came and removed his body. |
With him came Nicodemus, the man who had come to Jesus at night. He brought about seventy-five pounds of perfumed ointment made from myrrh and aloes. | 39Nicodemus, the man who had first come to Jesus at night, also arrived, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes weighing about 100 litra. |
Following Jewish burial custom, they wrapped Jesus’ body with the spices in long sheets of linen cloth. | 40They took the body of Jesus and wrapped it in linen cloths along with spices, according to the burial custom of the Jews. |
The place of crucifixion was near a garden, where there was a new tomb, never used before. | 41A garden was located in the place where he was crucified, and in that garden was a new tomb in which no one had yet been placed. |
And so, because it was the day of preparation for the Jewish Passover and since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there. | 42Because it was the Jewish Preparation Day, and because the tomb was nearby, they put Jesus there. |
