1Now when He concluded all His sayings in the hearing of the people, He entered Capernaum.

1When Jesus had finished saying all this to the people, he returned to Capernaum.

2And a certain centurion’s servant, who was dear to him, was sick and ready to die.

2At that time the highly valued slave of a Roman officer was sick and near death.

3So when he heard about Jesus, he sent elders of the Jews to Him, pleading with Him to come and heal his servant.

3When the officer heard about Jesus, he sent some respected Jewish elders to ask him to come and heal his slave.

4And when they came to Jesus, they begged Him earnestly, saying that the one for whom He should do this was deserving,

4So they earnestly begged Jesus to help the man. “If anyone deserves your help, he does,” they said,

5“for he loves our nation, and has built us a synagogue.”

5“for he loves the Jewish people and even built a synagogue for us.”

6Then Jesus went with them. And when He was already not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to Him, saying to Him, “Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof.

6So Jesus went with them. But just before they arrived at the house, the officer sent some friends to say, “Lord, don’t trouble yourself by coming to my home, for I am not worthy of such an honor.

7Therefore I did not even think myself worthy to come to You. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.

7I am not even worthy to come and meet you. Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed.

8For I also am a man placed under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

8I know this because I am under the authority of my superior officers, and I have authority over my soldiers. I only need to say, ‘Go,’ and they go, or ‘Come,’ and they come. And if I say to my slaves, ‘Do this,’ they do it.”

9When Jesus heard these things, He marveled at him, and turned around and said to the crowd that followed Him, “I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!”

9When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to the crowd that was following him, he said, “I tell you, I haven’t seen faith like this in all Israel!”

10And those who were sent, returning to the house, found the servant well who had been sick.

10And when the officer’s friends returned to his house, they found the slave completely healed. Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son

11Now it happened, the day after, that He went into a city called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and a large crowd.

11Soon afterward Jesus went with his disciples to the village of Nain, and a large crowd followed him.

12And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her.

12A funeral procession was coming out as he approached the village gate. The young man who had died was a widow’s only son, and a large crowd from the village was with her.

13When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.”

13When the Lord saw her, his heart overflowed with compassion. “Don’t cry!” he said.

14Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.”

14Then he walked over to the coffin and touched it, and the bearers stopped. “Young man,” he said, “I tell you, get up.”

15So he who was dead sat up and began to speak. And He presented him to his mother.

15Then the dead boy sat up and began to talk! And Jesus gave him back to his mother.

16Then fear came upon all, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has risen up among us”; and, “God has visited His people.”

16Great fear swept the crowd, and they praised God, saying, “A mighty prophet has risen among us,” and “God has visited his people today.”

17And this report about Him went throughout all Judea and all the surrounding region.

17And the news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding countryside. Jesus and John the Baptist

18Then the disciples of John reported to him concerning all these things.

18The disciples of John the Baptist told John about everything Jesus was doing. So John called for two of his disciples,

19And John, calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to Jesus, saying, “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?”

19and he sent them to the Lord to ask him, “Are you the Messiah we’ve been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?”

20When the men had come to Him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, saying, ‘Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?’ ”

20John’s two disciples found Jesus and said to him, “John the Baptist sent us to ask, ‘Are you the Messiah we’ve been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?’”

21And that very hour He cured many of infirmities, afflictions, and evil spirits; and to many blind He gave sight.

21At that very time, Jesus cured many people of their diseases, illnesses, and evil spirits, and he restored sight to many who were blind.

22Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached to them.

22Then he told John’s disciples, “Go back to John and tell him what you have seen and heard—the blind see, the lame walk, those with leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is being preached to the poor.”

23And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.”

23 And he added, “God blesses those who do not fall away because of me. ”

24When the messengers of John had departed, He began to speak to the multitudes concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?

24After John’s disciples left, Jesus began talking about him to the crowds. “What kind of man did you go into the wilderness to see? Was he a weak reed, swayed by every breath of wind?

25But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed those who are gorgeously appareled and live in luxury are in kings’ courts.

25 Or were you expecting to see a man dressed in expensive clothes? No, people who wear beautiful clothes and live in luxury are found in palaces.

26But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet.

26 Were you looking for a prophet? Yes, and he is more than a prophet.

27This is he of whom it is written: ‘Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You.’

27 John is the man to whom the Scriptures refer when they say, ‘Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, and he will prepare your way before you.’

28For I say to you, among those born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”

28 I tell you, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John. Yet even the least person in the Kingdom of God is greater than he is!”

29And when all the people heard Him, even the tax collectors justified God, having been baptized with the baptism of John.

29When they heard this, all the people—even the tax collectors—agreed that God’s way was right, for they had been baptized by John.

30But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the will of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.

30But the Pharisees and experts in religious law rejected God’s plan for them, for they had refused John’s baptism.

31And the Lord said, “To what then shall I liken the men of this generation, and what are they like?

31 “To what can I compare the people of this generation?” Jesus asked. “How can I describe them?

32They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, saying: ‘We played the flute for you, And you did not dance; We mourned to you, And you did not weep.’

32 They are like children playing a game in the public square. They complain to their friends, ‘We played wedding songs, and you didn’t dance, so we played funeral songs, and you didn’t weep.’

33For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’

33 For John the Baptist didn’t spend his time eating bread or drinking wine, and you say, ‘He’s possessed by a demon.’

34The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look, a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’

34 The Son of Man, on the other hand, feasts and drinks, and you say, ‘He’s a glutton and a drunkard, and a friend of tax collectors and other sinners!’

35But wisdom is justified by all her children.”

35 But wisdom is shown to be right by the lives of those who follow it. ” Jesus Anointed by a Sinful Woman

36Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And He went to the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to eat.

36One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to have dinner with him, so Jesus went to his home and sat down to eat.

37And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil,

37When a certain immoral woman from that city heard he was eating there, she brought a beautiful alabaster jar filled with expensive perfume.

38and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil.

38Then she knelt behind him at his feet, weeping. Her tears fell on his feet, and she wiped them off with her hair. Then she kept kissing his feet and putting perfume on them.

39Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke to himself, saying, “This Man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner.”

39When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know what kind of woman is touching him. She’s a sinner!”

40And Jesus answered and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” So he said, “Teacher, say it.”

40Then Jesus answered his thoughts. “Simon,” he said to the Pharisee, “I have something to say to you.” “Go ahead, Teacher,” Simon replied.

41“There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.

41Then Jesus told him this story: “A man loaned money to two people—500 pieces of silver to one and 50 pieces to the other.

42And when they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more?”

42 But neither of them could repay him, so he kindly forgave them both, canceling their debts. Who do you suppose loved him more after that?”

43Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he forgave more.” And He said to him, “You have rightly judged.”

43Simon answered, “I suppose the one for whom he canceled the larger debt.” “That’s right,” Jesus said.

44Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head.

44Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Look at this woman kneeling here. When I entered your home, you didn’t offer me water to wash the dust from my feet, but she has washed them with her tears and wiped them with her hair.

45You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in.

45 You didn’t greet me with a kiss, but from the time I first came in, she has not stopped kissing my feet.

46You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil.

46 You neglected the courtesy of olive oil to anoint my head, but she has anointed my feet with rare perfume.

47Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.”

47 “I tell you, her sins—and they are many—have been forgiven, so she has shown me much love. But a person who is forgiven little shows only little love.”

48Then He said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”

48Then Jesus said to the woman, “Your sins are forgiven.”

49And those who sat at the table with Him began to say to themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”

49The men at the table said among themselves, “Who is this man, that he goes around forgiving sins?”

50Then He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”

50And Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
