After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and in this way He showed Himself: | 1Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee. It happened this way: |
Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. | 2Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. |
Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We are going with you also.” They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. | 3"I'm going out to fish," Simon Peter told them, and they said, "We'll go with you." So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. |
But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. | 4Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. |
Then Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any food?” They answered Him, “No.” | 5He called out to them, "Friends, haven't you any fish?" "No," they answered. |
And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish. | 6He said, "Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some." When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish. |
Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea. | 7Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, "It is the Lord," he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. |
But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits), dragging the net with fish. | 8The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards. |
Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread. | 9When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread. |
Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish which you have just caught.” | 10Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish you have just caught." |
Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken. | 11So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. |
Jesus said to them, “Come and eat breakfast.” Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, “Who are You?”—knowing that it was the Lord. | 12Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." None of the disciples dared ask him, "Who are you?" They knew it was the Lord. |
Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish. | 13Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. |
This is now the third time Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after He was raised from the dead. | 14This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead. |
So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Feed My lambs.” | 15When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?" "Yes, Lord," he said, "you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Feed my lambs." |
He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Tend My sheep.” | 16Again Jesus said, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" He answered, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Take care of my sheep." |
He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep. | 17The third time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, "Do you love me?" He said, "Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Feed my sheep. |
Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.” | 18Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go." |
This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, “Follow Me.” | 19Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, "Follow me!" |
Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?” | 20Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, "Lord, who is going to betray you?") |
Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, “But Lord, what about this man?” | 21When Peter saw him, he asked, "Lord, what about him?" |
Jesus said to him, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.” | 22Jesus answered, "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me." |
Then this saying went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you?” | 23Because of this, the rumor spread among the believers that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?" |
This is the disciple who testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true. | 24This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true. |
And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen. | 25Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written. |
