The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, | 1In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach |
until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen, | 2until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. |
to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God. | 3After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. |
And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; | 4On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. |
for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” | 5For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit." |
Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” | 6Then they gathered around him and asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?" |
And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. | 7He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. |
But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” | 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." |
Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. | 9After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. |
And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, | 10They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. |
who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.” | 11"Men of Galilee," they said, "why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven." |
Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey. | 12Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day's walk from the city. |
And when they had entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying: Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot; and Judas the son of James. | 13When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. |
These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers. | 14They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. |
And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples (altogether the number of names was about a hundred and twenty), and said, | 15In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) |
“Men and brethren, this Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus; | 16and said, "Brothers and sisters, the Scripture had to be fulfilled in which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus. |
for he was numbered with us and obtained a part in this ministry.” | 17He was one of our number and shared in our ministry." |
(Now this man purchased a field with the wages of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his entrails gushed out. | 18(With the payment he received for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out. |
And it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem; so that field is called in their own language, Akel Dama, that is, Field of Blood.) | 19Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) |
“For it is written in the Book of Psalms: ‘Let his dwelling place be desolate, And let no one live in it’; and, ‘Let another take his office.’ | 20"For," said Peter, "it is written in the Book of Psalms: "'May his place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in it,' and, "'May another take his place of leadership.' |
“Therefore, of these men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, | 21Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus was living among us, |
beginning from the baptism of John to that day when He was taken up from us, one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection.” | 22beginning from John's baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection." |
And they proposed two: Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. | 23So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. |
And they prayed and said, “You, O Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen | 24Then they prayed, "Lord, you know everyone's heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen |
to take part in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.” | 25to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs." |
And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Matthias. And he was numbered with the eleven apostles. | 26Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles. |
