For the music director; by the Korahites, a well-written song. O God, we have clearly heard; our ancestors have told us what you did in their days, in ancient times. | 1O God, we have heard it with our own ears— our ancestors have told us of all you did in their day, in days long ago: |
You, by your power, defeated nations and settled our fathers on their land; you crushed the people living there and enabled our ancestors to occupy it. | 2You drove out the pagan nations by your power and gave all the land to our ancestors. You crushed their enemies and set our ancestors free. |
For they did not conquer the land by their swords, and they did not prevail by their strength, but rather by your power, strength and good favor, for you were partial to them. | 3They did not conquer the land with their swords; it was not their own strong arm that gave them victory. It was your right hand and strong arm and the blinding light from your face that helped them, for you loved them. |
You are my king, O God! Decree Jacob's deliverance! | 4You are my King and my God. You command victories for Israel. |
By your power we will drive back our enemies; by your strength we will trample down our foes! | 5Only by your power can we push back our enemies; only in your name can we trample our foes. |
For I do not trust in my bow, and I do not prevail by my sword. | 6I do not trust in my bow; I do not count on my sword to save me. |
For you deliver us from our enemies; you humiliate those who hate us. | 7You are the one who gives us victory over our enemies; you disgrace those who hate us. |
In God I boast all day long, and we will continually give thanks to your name. (Selah) | 8O God, we give glory to you all day long and constantly praise your name. Interlude |
But you rejected and embarrassed us! You did not go into battle with our armies. | 9But now you have tossed us aside in dishonor. You no longer lead our armies to battle. |
You made us retreat from the enemy. Those who hate us take whatever they want from us. | 10You make us retreat from our enemies and allow those who hate us to plunder our land. |
You handed us over like sheep to be eaten; you scattered us among the nations. | 11You have butchered us like sheep and scattered us among the nations. |
You sold your people for a pittance; you did not ask a high price for them. | 12You sold your precious people for a pittance, making nothing on the sale. |
You made us an object of disdain to our neighbors; those who live on our borders taunt and insult us. | 13You let our neighbors mock us. We are an object of scorn and derision to those around us. |
You made us an object of ridicule among the nations; foreigners treat us with contempt. | 14You have made us the butt of their jokes; they shake their heads at us in scorn. |
All day long I feel humiliated and am overwhelmed with shame, | 15We can’t escape the constant humiliation; shame is written across our faces. |
before the vindictive enemy who ridicules and insults me. | 16All we hear are the taunts of our mockers. All we see are our vengeful enemies. |
All this has happened to us, even though we have not rejected you or violated your covenant with us. | 17All this has happened though we have not forgotten you. We have not violated your covenant. |
We have not been unfaithful, nor have we disobeyed your commands. | 18Our hearts have not deserted you. We have not strayed from your path. |
Yet you have battered us, leaving us a heap of ruins overrun by wild dogs; you have covered us with darkness. | 19Yet you have crushed us in the jackal’s desert home. You have covered us with darkness and death. |
If we had rejected our God, and spread out our hands in prayer to another god, | 20If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread our hands in prayer to foreign gods, |
would not God discover it, for he knows one's thoughts? | 21God would surely have known it, for he knows the secrets of every heart. |
Yet because of you we are killed all day long; we are treated like sheep at the slaughtering block. | 22But for your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep. |
Rouse yourself! Why do you sleep, O Lord? Wake up! Do not reject us forever! | 23Wake up, O Lord! Why do you sleep? Get up! Do not reject us forever. |
Why do you look the other way, and ignore the way we are oppressed and mistreated? | 24Why do you look the other way? Why do you ignore our suffering and oppression? |
For we lie in the dirt, with our bellies pressed to the ground. | 25We collapse in the dust, lying face down in the dirt. |
Rise up and help us! Rescue us because of your loyal love! | 26Rise up! Help us! Ransom us because of your unfailing love. |
