| 1For the music director; by the Korahites, a well-written song. O God, we have clearly heard; our ancestors have told us what you did in their days, in ancient times. | 1For the choir director. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. God, we have heard with our ears-- our ancestors have told us-- the work You accomplished in their days, in days long ago: |
| 2You, by your power, defeated nations and settled our fathers on their land; you crushed the people living there and enabled our ancestors to occupy it. | 2to plant them, You drove out the nations with Your hand; to settle them, You crushed the peoples. |
| 3For they did not conquer the land by their swords, and they did not prevail by their strength, but rather by your power, strength and good favor, for you were partial to them. | 3For they did not take the land by their sword-- their arm did not bring them victory-- but by Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your face, for You were pleased with them. |
| 4You are my king, O God! Decree Jacob's deliverance! | 4You are my King, my God, who ordains victories for Jacob. |
| 5By your power we will drive back our enemies; by your strength we will trample down our foes! | 5Through You we drive back our foes; through Your name we trample our enemies. |
| 6For I do not trust in my bow, and I do not prevail by my sword. | 6For I do not trust in my bow, and my sword does not bring me victory. |
| 7For you deliver us from our enemies; you humiliate those who hate us. | 7But You give us victory over our foes and let those who hate us be disgraced. |

| 9But you rejected and embarrassed us! You did not go into battle with our armies. | 9But You have rejected and humiliated us; You do not march out with our armies. |
| 10You made us retreat from the enemy. Those who hate us take whatever they want from us. | 10You make us retreat from the foe, and those who hate us have taken plunder for themselves. |
| 11You handed us over like sheep to be eaten; you scattered us among the nations. | 11You hand us over to be eaten like sheep and scatter us among the nations. |
| 12You sold your people for a pittance; you did not ask a high price for them. | 12You sell Your people for nothing; You make no profit from selling them. |
| 13You made us an object of disdain to our neighbors; those who live on our borders taunt and insult us. | 13You make us an object of reproach to our neighbors, a source of mockery and ridicule to those around us. |
| 14You made us an object of ridicule among the nations; foreigners treat us with contempt. | 14You make us a joke among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples. |
| 15All day long I feel humiliated and am overwhelmed with shame, | 15My disgrace is before me all day long, and shame has covered my face, |
| 16before the vindictive enemy who ridicules and insults me. | 16because of the voice of the scorner and reviler, because of the enemy and avenger. |
| 17All this has happened to us, even though we have not rejected you or violated your covenant with us. | 17All this has happened to us, but we have not forgotten You or betrayed Your covenant. |
| 18We have not been unfaithful, nor have we disobeyed your commands. | 18Our hearts have not turned back; our steps have not strayed from Your path. |
| 19Yet you have battered us, leaving us a heap of ruins overrun by wild dogs; you have covered us with darkness. | 19But You have crushed us in a haunt of jackals and have covered us with deepest darkness. |
| 20If we had rejected our God, and spread out our hands in prayer to another god, | 20If we had forgotten the name of our God and spread out our hands to a foreign god, |
| 21would not God discover it, for he knows one's thoughts? | 21wouldn't God have found this out, since He knows the secrets of the heart? |
| 22Yet because of you we are killed all day long; we are treated like sheep at the slaughtering block. | 22Because of You we are slain all day long; we are counted as sheep to be slaughtered. |
| 23Rouse yourself! Why do you sleep, O Lord? Wake up! Do not reject us forever! | 23Wake up, LORD! Why are You sleeping? Get up! Don't reject us forever! |
| 24Why do you look the other way, and ignore the way we are oppressed and mistreated? | 24Why do You hide Yourself and forget our affliction and oppression? |
| 25For we lie in the dirt, with our bellies pressed to the ground. | 25For we have sunk down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground. |
| 26Rise up and help us! Rescue us because of your loyal love! | 26Rise up! Help us! Redeem us because of Your faithful love. |
