NET Bible | New Living Translation |
By David. O LORD, fight those who fight with me! Attack those who attack me! | 1O LORD, oppose those who oppose me. Fight those who fight against me. |
Grab your small shield and large shield, and rise up to help me! | 2Put on your armor, and take up your shield. Prepare for battle, and come to my aid. |
Use your spear and lance against those who chase me! Assure me with these words: "I am your deliverer!" | 3Lift up your spear and javelin against those who pursue me. Let me hear you say, “I will give you victory!” |
May those who seek my life be embarrassed and humiliated! May those who plan to harm me be turned back and ashamed! | 4Bring shame and disgrace on those trying to kill me; turn them back and humiliate those who want to harm me. |
May they be like wind-driven chaff, as the LORD's angel attacks them! | 5Blow them away like chaff in the wind— a wind sent by the angel of the LORD. |
May their path be dark and slippery, as the LORD's angel chases them! | 6Make their path dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them. |
I did not harm them, but they hid a net to catch me and dug a pit to trap me. | 7I did them no wrong, but they laid a trap for me. I did them no wrong, but they dug a pit to catch me. |
Let destruction take them by surprise! Let the net they hid catch them! Let them fall into destruction! | 8So let sudden ruin come upon them! Let them be caught in the trap they set for me! Let them be destroyed in the pit they dug for me. |
Then I will rejoice in the LORD and be happy because of his deliverance. | 9Then I will rejoice in the LORD. I will be glad because he rescues me. |
With all my strength I will say, "O LORD, who can compare to you? You rescue the oppressed from those who try to overpower them; the oppressed and needy from those who try to rob them." | 10With every bone in my body I will praise him: “LORD, who can compare with you? Who else rescues the helpless from the strong? Who else protects the helpless and poor from those who rob them?” |
Violent men perjure themselves, and falsely accuse me. | 11Malicious witnesses testify against me. They accuse me of crimes I know nothing about. |
They repay me evil for the good I have done; I am overwhelmed with sorrow. | 12They repay me evil for good. I am sick with despair. |
When they were sick, I wore sackcloth, and refrained from eating food. (If I am lying, may my prayers go unanswered!) | 13Yet when they were ill, I grieved for them. I denied myself by fasting for them, but my prayers returned unanswered. |
I mourned for them as I would for a friend or my brother. I bowed down in sorrow as if I were mourning for my mother. | 14I was sad, as though they were my friends or family, as if I were grieving for my own mother. |
But when I stumbled, they rejoiced and gathered together; they gathered together to ambush me. They tore at me without stopping to rest. | 15But they are glad now that I am in trouble; they gleefully join together against me. I am attacked by people I don’t even know; they slander me constantly. |
When I tripped, they taunted me relentlessly, and tried to bite me. | 16They mock me and call me names; they snarl at me. |
O Lord, how long are you going to just stand there and watch this? Rescue me from their destructive attacks; guard my life from the young lions! | 17How long, O Lord, will you look on and do nothing? Rescue me from their fierce attacks. Protect my life from these lions! |
Then I will give you thanks in the great assembly; I will praise you before a large crowd of people! | 18Then I will thank you in front of the great assembly. I will praise you before all the people. |
Do not let those who are my enemies for no reason gloat over me! Do not let those who hate me without cause carry out their wicked schemes! | 19Don’t let my treacherous enemies rejoice over my defeat. Don’t let those who hate me without cause gloat over my sorrow. |
For they do not try to make peace with others, but plan ways to deceive those who are unsuspecting. | 20They don’t talk of peace; they plot against innocent people who mind their own business. |
They are ready to devour me; they say, "Aha! Aha! We've got you!" | 21They shout, “Aha! Aha! With our own eyes we saw him do it!” |
But you take notice, LORD! O Lord, do not remain far away from me! | 22O LORD, you know all about this. Do not stay silent. Do not abandon me now, O Lord. |
Rouse yourself, wake up and vindicate me! My God and Lord, defend my just cause! | 23Wake up! Rise to my defense! Take up my case, my God and my Lord. |
Vindicate me by your justice, O LORD my God! Do not let them gloat over me! | 24Declare me not guilty, O LORD my God, for you give justice. Don’t let my enemies laugh about me in my troubles. |
Do not let them say to themselves, "Aha! We have what we wanted!" Do not let them say, "We have devoured him!" | 25Don’t let them say, “Look, we got what we wanted! Now we will eat him alive!” |
May those who want to harm me be totally embarrassed and ashamed! May those who arrogantly taunt me be covered with shame and humiliation! | 26May those who rejoice at my troubles be humiliated and disgraced. May those who triumph over me be covered with shame and dishonor. |
May those who desire my vindication shout for joy and rejoice! May they continually say, "May the LORD be praised, for he wants his servant to be secure." | 27But give great joy to those who came to my defense. Let them continually say, “Great is the LORD, who delights in blessing his servant with peace!” |
Then I will tell others about your justice, and praise you all day long. | 28Then I will proclaim your justice, and I will praise you all day long. |
