A well-written song by Ethan the Ezrachite. I will sing continually about the LORD's faithful deeds; to future generations I will proclaim your faithfulness. | 1A Maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite. I will sing of the lovingkindness of the LORD forever; To all generations I will make known Your faithfulness with my mouth. |
For I say, "Loyal love is permanently established; in the skies you set up your faithfulness." | 2For I have said, "Lovingkindness will be built up forever; In the heavens You will establish Your faithfulness." |
The LORD said, "I have made a covenant with my chosen one; I have made a promise on oath to David, my servant: | 3"I have made a covenant with My chosen; I have sworn to David My servant, |
I will give you an eternal dynasty and establish your throne throughout future generations.'" (Selah) | 4I will establish your seed forever And build up your throne to all generations." Selah. |
O LORD, the heavens praise your amazing deeds, as well as your faithfulness in the angelic assembly. | 5The heavens will praise Your wonders, O LORD; Your faithfulness also in the assembly of the holy ones. |
For who in the skies can compare to the LORD? Who is like the LORD among the heavenly beings, | 6For who in the skies is comparable to the LORD? Who among the sons of the mighty is like the LORD, |
a God who is honored in the great angelic assembly, and more awesome than all who surround him? | 7A God greatly feared in the council of the holy ones, And awesome above all those who are around Him? |
O LORD, sovereign God! Who is strong like you, O LORD? Your faithfulness surrounds you. | 8O LORD God of hosts, who is like You, O mighty LORD? Your faithfulness also surrounds You. |
You rule over the proud sea. When its waves surge, you calm them. | 9You rule the swelling of the sea; When its waves rise, You still them. |
You crushed the Proud One and killed it; with your strong arm you scattered your enemies. | 10You Yourself crushed Rahab like one who is slain; You scattered Your enemies with Your mighty arm. |
The heavens belong to you, as does the earth. You made the world and all it contains. | 11The heavens are Yours, the earth also is Yours; The world and all it contains, You have founded them. |
You created the north and the south. Tabor and Hermon rejoice in your name. | 12The north and the south, You have created them; Tabor and Hermon shout for joy at Your name. |
Your arm is powerful, your hand strong, your right hand victorious. | 13You have a strong arm; Your hand is mighty, Your right hand is exalted. |
Equity and justice are the foundation of your throne. Loyal love and faithfulness characterize your rule. | 14Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; Lovingkindness and truth go before You. |
How blessed are the people who worship you! O LORD, they experience your favor. | 15How blessed are the people who know the joyful sound! O LORD, they walk in the light of Your countenance. |
They rejoice in your name all day long, and are vindicated by your justice. | 16In Your name they rejoice all the day, And by Your righteousness they are exalted. |
For you give them splendor and strength. By your favor we are victorious. | 17For You are the glory of their strength, And by Your favor our horn is exalted. |
For our shield belongs to the LORD, our king to the Holy One of Israel. | 18For our shield belongs to the LORD, And our king to the Holy One of Israel. |
Then you spoke through a vision to your faithful followers and said: "I have energized a warrior; I have raised up a young man from the people. | 19Once You spoke in vision to Your godly ones, And said, "I have given help to one who is mighty; I have exalted one chosen from the people. |
I have discovered David, my servant. With my holy oil I have anointed him as king. | 20"I have found David My servant; With My holy oil I have anointed him, |
My hand will support him, and my arm will strengthen him. | 21With whom My hand will be established; My arm also will strengthen him. |
No enemy will be able to exact tribute from him; a violent oppressor will not be able to humiliate him. | 22"The enemy will not deceive him, Nor the son of wickedness afflict him. |
I will crush his enemies before him; I will strike down those who hate him. | 23"But I shall crush his adversaries before him, And strike those who hate him. |
He will experience my faithfulness and loyal love, and by my name he will win victories. | 24"My faithfulness and My lovingkindness will be with him, And in My name his horn will be exalted. |
I will place his hand over the sea, his right hand over the rivers. | 25"I shall also set his hand on the sea And his right hand on the rivers. |
He will call out to me, 'You are my father, my God, and the protector who delivers me.' | 26"He will cry to Me, 'You are my Father, My God, and the rock of my salvation.' |
I will appoint him to be my firstborn son, the most exalted of the earth's kings. | 27"I also shall make him My firstborn, The highest of the kings of the earth. |
I will always extend my loyal love to him, and my covenant with him is secure. | 28"My lovingkindness I will keep for him forever, And My covenant shall be confirmed to him. |
I will give him an eternal dynasty, and make his throne as enduring as the skies above. | 29"So I will establish his descendants forever And his throne as the days of heaven. |
If his sons reject my law and disobey my regulations, | 30"If his sons forsake My law And do not walk in My judgments, |
if they break my rules and do not keep my commandments, | 31If they violate My statutes And do not keep My commandments, |
I will punish their rebellion by beating them with a club, their sin by inflicting them with bruises. | 32Then I will punish their transgression with the rod And their iniquity with stripes. |
But I will not remove my loyal love from him, nor be unfaithful to my promise. | 33"But I will not break off My lovingkindness from him, Nor deal falsely in My faithfulness. |
I will not break my covenant or go back on what I promised. | 34"My covenant I will not violate, Nor will I alter the utterance of My lips. |
Once and for all I have vowed by my own holiness, I will never deceive David. | 35"Once I have sworn by My holiness; I will not lie to David. |
His dynasty will last forever. His throne will endure before me, like the sun, | 36"His descendants shall endure forever And his throne as the sun before Me. |
it will remain stable, like the moon, his throne will endure like the skies." (Selah) | 37"It shall be established forever like the moon, And the witness in the sky is faithful." Selah. |
But you have spurned and rejected him; you are angry with your chosen king. | 38But You have cast off and rejected, You have been full of wrath against Your anointed. |
You have repudiated your covenant with your servant; you have thrown his crown to the ground. | 39You have spurned the covenant of Your servant; You have profaned his crown in the dust. |
You have broken down all his walls; you have made his strongholds a heap of ruins. | 40You have broken down all his walls; You have brought his strongholds to ruin. |
All who pass by have robbed him; he has become an object of disdain to his neighbors. | 41All who pass along the way plunder him; He has become a reproach to his neighbors. |
You have allowed his adversaries to be victorious, and all his enemies to rejoice. | 42You have exalted the right hand of his adversaries; You have made all his enemies rejoice. |
You turn back his sword from the adversary, and have not sustained him in battle. | 43You also turn back the edge of his sword And have not made him stand in battle. |
You have brought to an end his splendor, and have knocked his throne to the ground. | 44You have made his splendor to cease And cast his throne to the ground. |
You have cut short his youth, and have covered him with shame. (Selah) | 45You have shortened the days of his youth; You have covered him with shame. Selah. |
How long, O LORD, will this last? Will you remain hidden forever? Will your anger continue to burn like fire? | 46How long, O LORD? Will You hide Yourself forever? Will Your wrath burn like fire? |
Take note of my brief lifespan! Why do you make all people so mortal? | 47Remember what my span of life is; For what vanity You have created all the sons of men! |
No man can live on without experiencing death, or deliver his life from the power of Sheol. (Selah) | 48What man can live and not see death? Can he deliver his soul from the power of Sheol? Selah. |
Where are your earlier faithful deeds, O Lord, the ones performed in accordance with your reliable oath to David? | 49Where are Your former lovingkindnesses, O Lord, Which You swore to David in Your faithfulness? |
Take note, O Lord, of the way your servants are taunted, and of how I must bear so many insults from people! | 50Remember, O Lord, the reproach of Your servants; How I bear in my bosom the reproach of all the many peoples, |
Your enemies, O LORD, hurl insults; they insult your chosen king as they dog his footsteps. | 51With which Your enemies have reproached, O LORD, With which they have reproached the footsteps of Your anointed. |
The LORD deserves praise forevermore! We agree! We agree! | 52Blessed be the LORD forever! Amen and Amen. |
