| 1When he had said these things, Jesus went out with his disciples across the Kidron Valley. There was an orchard there, and he and his disciples went into it. | 1When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples. |
| 2(Now Judas, the one who betrayed him, knew the place too, because Jesus had met there many times with his disciples.) | 2And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples. |
| 3So Judas obtained a squad of soldiers and some officers of the chief priests and Pharisees. They came to the orchard with lanterns and torches and weapons. | 3Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons. |
| 4Then Jesus, because he knew everything that was going to happen to him, came and asked them, "Who are you looking for?" | 4Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye? |
| 5They replied, "Jesus the Nazarene." He told them, "I am he." (Now Judas, the one who betrayed him, was standing there with them.) | 5They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. |
| 6So when Jesus said to them, "I am he," they retreated and fell to the ground. | 6As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground. |
| 7Then Jesus asked them again, "Who are you looking for?" And they said, "Jesus the Nazarene." | 7Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. |
| 8Jesus replied, "I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, let these men go." | 8Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way: |
| 9He said this to fulfill the word he had spoken, "I have not lost a single one of those whom you gave me." | 9That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none. |
| 10Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, pulled it out and struck the high priest's slave, cutting off his right ear. (Now the slave's name was Malchus.) | 10Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. |
| 11But Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword back into its sheath! Am I not to drink the cup that the Father has given me?" | 11Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it? |
| 12Then the squad of soldiers with their commanding officer and the officers of the Jewish leaders arrested Jesus and tied him up. | 12Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him, |
| 13They brought him first to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. | 13And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year. |
| 14(Now it was Caiaphas who had advised the Jewish leaders that it was to their advantage that one man die for the people.) | 14Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people. |
| 15Simon Peter and another disciple followed them as they brought Jesus to Annas. (Now the other disciple was acquainted with the high priest, and he went with Jesus into the high priest's courtyard.) | 15And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest. |
| 16But Simon Peter was left standing outside by the door. So the other disciple who was acquainted with the high priest came out and spoke to the slave girl who watched the door, and brought Peter inside. | 16But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter. |
| 17The girl who was the doorkeeper said to Peter, "You're not one of this man's disciples too, are you?" He replied, "I am not." | 17Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not. |
| 18(Now the slaves and the guards were standing around a charcoal fire they had made, warming themselves because it was cold. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.) | 18And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself. |
| 19While this was happening, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching. | 19The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine. |
| 20Jesus replied, "I have spoken publicly to the world. I always taught in the synagogues and in the temple courts, where all the Jewish people assemble together. I have said nothing in secret. | 20Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing. |
| 21Why do you ask me? Ask those who heard what I said. They know what I said." | 21Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said. |
| 22When Jesus had said this, one of the high priest's officers who stood nearby struck him on the face and said, "Is that the way you answer the high priest?" | 22And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so? |
| 23Jesus replied, "If I have said something wrong, confirm what is wrong. But if I spoke correctly, why strike me?" | 23Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me? |
| 24Then Annas sent him, still tied up, to Caiaphas the high priest. | 24Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest. |
| 25Meanwhile Simon Peter was standing in the courtyard warming himself. They said to him, "You aren't one of his disciples too, are you?" Peter denied it: "I am not!" | 25And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not. |
| 26One of the high priest's slaves, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, "Did I not see you in the orchard with him?" | 26One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him? |
| 27Then Peter denied it again, and immediately a rooster crowed. | 27Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew. |
| 28Then they brought Jesus from Caiaphas to the Roman governor's residence. (Now it was very early morning.) They did not go into the governor's residence so they would not be ceremonially defiled, but could eat the Passover meal. | 28Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover. |
| 29So Pilate came outside to them and said, "What accusation do you bring against this man?" | 29Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man? |
| 30They replied, "If this man were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you." | 30They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee. |
| 31Pilate told them, "Take him yourselves and pass judgment on him according to your own law!" The Jewish leaders replied, "We cannot legally put anyone to death." | 31Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death: |
| 32(This happened to fulfill the word Jesus had spoken when he indicated what kind of death he was going to die.) | 32That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die. |
| 33So Pilate went back into the governor's residence, summoned Jesus, and asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" | 33Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews? |
| 34Jesus replied, "Are you saying this on your own initiative, or have others told you about me?" | 34Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me? |
| 35Pilate answered, "I am not a Jew, am I? Your own people and your chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?" | 35Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done? |
| 36Jesus replied, "My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my servants would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish authorities. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here." | 36Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. |
| 37Then Pilate said, "So you are a king!" Jesus replied, "You say that I am a king. For this reason I was born, and for this reason I came into the world--to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice." | 37Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. |
| 38Pilate asked, "What is truth?" When he had said this he went back outside to the Jewish leaders and announced, "I find no basis for an accusation against him. | 38Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all. |
| 39But it is your custom that I release one prisoner for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release for you the king of the Jews?" | 39But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews? |
| 40Then they shouted back, "Not this man, but Barabbas!" (Now Barabbas was a revolutionary.) | 40Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber. |
