| 1"For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. | 1"For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. |
| 2"When he had agreed with the laborers for a denarius for the day, he sent them into his vineyard. | 2He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into his vineyard. |
| 3"And he went out about the third hour and saw others standing idle in the market place; | 3"About nine in the morning he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing. |
| 4and to those he said, 'You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.' And so they went. | 4He told them, 'You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.' |
| 5"Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did the same thing. | 5So they went. "He went out again about noon and about three in the afternoon and did the same thing. |
| 6"And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing around; and he said to them, 'Why have you been standing here idle all day long?' | 6About five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, 'Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?' |
| 7"They said to him, 'Because no one hired us.' He said to them, 'You go into the vineyard too.' | 7"'Because no one has hired us,' they answered. "He said to them, 'You also go and work in my vineyard.' |

| 12saying, 'These last men have worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden and the scorching heat of the day.' | 12These who were hired last worked only one hour,' they said, 'and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.' |
| 13"But he answered and said to one of them, 'Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for a denarius? | 13"But he answered one of them, 'I am not being unfair to you, friend. Didn't you agree to work for a denarius? |
| 14'Take what is yours and go, but I wish to give to this last man the same as to you. | 14Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you. |
| 15'Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with what is my own? Or is your eye envious because I am generous?' | 15Don't I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?' |
| 16"So the last shall be first, and the first last." | 16"So the last will be first, and the first will be last." |
| 17As Jesus was about to go up to Jerusalem, He took the twelve disciples aside by themselves, and on the way He said to them, | 17Now Jesus was going up to Jerusalem. On the way, he took the Twelve aside and said to them, |
| 18"Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn Him to death, | 18"We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death |
| 19and will hand Him over to the Gentiles to mock and scourge and crucify Him, and on the third day He will be raised up." | 19and will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life!" |
| 20Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to Jesus with her sons, bowing down and making a request of Him. | 20Then the mother of Zebedee's sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor of him. |
| 21And He said to her, "What do you wish?" She said to Him, "Command that in Your kingdom these two sons of mine may sit one on Your right and one on Your left." | 21"What is it you want?" he asked. She said, "Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom." |
| 22But Jesus answered, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?" They said to Him, "We are able." | 22"You don't know what you are asking," Jesus said to them. "Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?" "We can," they answered. |
| 23He said to them, "My cup you shall drink; but to sit on My right and on My left, this is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by My Father." | 23Jesus said to them, "You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father." |
| 24And hearing this, the ten became indignant with the two brothers. | 24When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers. |
| 25But Jesus called them to Himself and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. | 25Jesus called them together and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. |
| 26"It is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant, | 26Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, |
| 27and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave; | 27and whoever wants to be first must be your slave-- |
| 28just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many." | 28just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." |
| 29As they were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed Him. | 29As Jesus and his disciples were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him. |
| 30And two blind men sitting by the road, hearing that Jesus was passing by, cried out, "Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!" | 30Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was going by, they shouted, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!" |
| 31The crowd sternly told them to be quiet, but they cried out all the more, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!" | 31The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!" |
| 32And Jesus stopped and called them, and said, "What do you want Me to do for you?" | 32Jesus stopped and called them. "What do you want me to do for you?" he asked. |
| 33They said to Him, "Lord, we want our eyes to be opened." | 33"Lord," they answered, "we want our sight." |
| 34Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes; and immediately they regained their sight and followed Him. | 34Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him. |
