A Song. A Psalm of the sons of Korah. For the choir director; according to Mahalath Leannoth. A Maskil of Heman the Ezrahite. O LORD, the God of my salvation, I have cried out by day and in the night before You. | 1A song, a psalm written by the Korahites; for the music director; according to the machalath-leannoth style; a well-written song by Heman the Ezrachite. O LORD God who delivers me! By day I cry out and at night I pray before you. |
Let my prayer come before You; Incline Your ear to my cry! | 2Listen to my prayer! Pay attention to my cry for help! |
For my soul has had enough troubles, And my life has drawn near to Sheol. | 3For my life is filled with troubles and I am ready to enter Sheol. |
I am reckoned among those who go down to the pit; I have become like a man without strength, | 4They treat me like those who descend into the grave. I am like a helpless man, |
Forsaken among the dead, Like the slain who lie in the grave, Whom You remember no more, And they are cut off from Your hand. | 5adrift among the dead, like corpses lying in the grave, whom you remember no more, and who are cut off from your power. |
You have put me in the lowest pit, In dark places, in the depths. | 6You place me in the lowest regions of the pit, in the dark places, in the watery depths. |
Your wrath has rested upon me, And You have afflicted me with all Your waves. Selah. | 7Your anger bears down on me, and you overwhelm me with all your waves. (Selah) |
You have removed my acquaintances far from me; You have made me an object of loathing to them; I am shut up and cannot go out. | 8You cause those who know me to keep their distance; you make me an appalling sight to them. I am trapped and cannot get free. |
My eye has wasted away because of affliction; I have called upon You every day, O LORD; I have spread out my hands to You. | 9My eyes grow weak because of oppression. I call out to you, O LORD, all day long; I spread out my hands in prayer to you. |
Will You perform wonders for the dead? Will the departed spirits rise and praise You? Selah. | 10Do you accomplish amazing things for the dead? Do the departed spirits rise up and give you thanks? (Selah) |
Will Your lovingkindness be declared in the grave, Your faithfulness in Abaddon? | 11Is your loyal love proclaimed in the grave, or your faithfulness in the place of the dead? |
Will Your wonders be made known in the darkness? And Your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness? | 12Are your amazing deeds experienced in the dark region, or your deliverance in the land of oblivion? |
But I, O LORD, have cried out to You for help, And in the morning my prayer comes before You. | 13As for me, I cry out to you, O LORD; in the morning my prayer confronts you. |
O LORD, why do You reject my soul? Why do You hide Your face from me? | 14O LORD, why do you reject me, and pay no attention to me? |
I was afflicted and about to die from my youth on; I suffer Your terrors; I am overcome. | 15I am oppressed and have been on the verge of death since my youth. I have been subjected to your horrors and am numb with pain. |
Your burning anger has passed over me; Your terrors have destroyed me. | 16Your anger overwhelms me; your terrors destroy me. |
They have surrounded me like water all day long; They have encompassed me altogether. | 17They surround me like water all day long; they join forces and encircle me. |
You have removed lover and friend far from me; My acquaintances are in darkness. | 18You cause my friends and neighbors to keep their distance; those who know me leave me alone in the darkness. |
