Now after this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them in pairs ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come. | 1After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him two by two into every town and place where he himself was about to go. |
And He was saying to them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. | 2He said to them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest. |
"Go; behold, I send you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. | 3Go! I am sending you out like lambs surrounded by wolves. |
"Carry no money belt, no bag, no shoes; and greet no one on the way. | 4Do not carry a money bag, a traveler's bag, or sandals, and greet no one on the road. |
"Whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace be to this house.' | 5Whenever you enter a house, first say, 'May peace be on this house!' |
"If a man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. | 6And if a peace-loving person is there, your peace will remain on him, but if not, it will return to you. |
"Stay in that house, eating and drinking what they give you; for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not keep moving from house to house. | 7Stay in that same house, eating and drinking what they give you, for the worker deserves his pay. Do not move around from house to house. |
"Whatever city you enter and they receive you, eat what is set before you; | 8Whenever you enter a town and the people welcome you, eat what is set before you. |
and heal those in it who are sick, and say to them, 'The kingdom of God has come near to you.' | 9Heal the sick in that town and say to them, 'The kingdom of God has come upon you!' |
"But whatever city you enter and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say, | 10But whenever you enter a town and the people do not welcome you, go into its streets and say, |
Even the dust of your city which clings to our feet we wipe off in protest against you; yet be sure of this, that the kingdom of God has come near.' | 11Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this: The kingdom of God has come.' |
"I say to you, it will be more tolerable in that day for Sodom than for that city. | 12I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town! |
"Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles had been performed in Tyre and Sidon which occurred in you, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. | 13"Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. |
"But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the judgment than for you. | 14But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon in the judgment than for you! |
"And you, Capernaum, will not be exalted to heaven, will you? You will be brought down to Hades! | 15And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? No, you will be thrown down to Hades! |
"The one who listens to you listens to Me, and the one who rejects you rejects Me; and he who rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me." | 16"The one who listens to you listens to me, and the one who rejects you rejects me, and the one who rejects me rejects the one who sent me." |
The seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name." | 17Then the seventy-two returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name!" |
And He said to them, "I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning. | 18So he said to them, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. |
"Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you. | 19Look, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions and on the full force of the enemy, and nothing will hurt you. |
"Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven." | 20Nevertheless, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names stand written in heaven." |
At that very time He rejoiced greatly in the Holy Spirit, and said, "I praise You, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight. | 21On that same occasion Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your gracious will. |
"All things have been handed over to Me by My Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him." | 22All things have been given to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son decides to reveal him." |
Turning to the disciples, He said privately, "Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see, | 23Then Jesus turned to his disciples and said privately, "Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! |
for I say to you, that many prophets and kings wished to see the things which you see, and did not see them, and to hear the things which you hear, and did not hear them." | 24For I tell you that many prophets and kings longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it." |
And a lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" | 25Now an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus, saying, "Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" |
And He said to him, "What is written in the Law? How does it read to you?" | 26He said to him, "What is written in the law? How do you understand it?" |
And he answered, "YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF." | 27The expert answered, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and love your neighbor as yourself." |
And He said to him, "You have answered correctly; DO THIS AND YOU WILL LIVE." | 28Jesus said to him, "You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live." |
But wishing to justify himself, he said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" | 29But the expert, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" |
Jesus replied and said, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, and they stripped him and beat him, and went away leaving him half dead. | 30Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him up, and went off, leaving him half dead. |
"And by chance a priest was going down on that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. | 31Now by chance a priest was going down that road, but when he saw the injured man he passed by on the other side. |
"Likewise a Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. | 32So too a Levite, when he came up to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. |
"But a Samaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him; and when he saw him, he felt compassion, | 33But a Samaritan who was traveling came to where the injured man was, and when he saw him, he felt compassion for him. |
and came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and he put him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn and took care of him. | 34He went up to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. |
"On the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, 'Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I return I will repay you.' | 35The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, 'Take care of him, and whatever else you spend, I will repay you when I come back this way.' |
"Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the robbers' hands?" | 36Which of these three do you think became a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?" |
And he said, "The one who showed mercy toward him." Then Jesus said to him, "Go and do the same." | 37The expert in religious law said, "The one who showed mercy to him." So Jesus said to him, "Go and do the same." |
Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. | 38Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him as a guest. |
She had a sister called Mary, who was seated at the Lord's feet, listening to His word. | 39She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to what he said. |
But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, "Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me." | 40But Martha was distracted with all the preparations she had to make, so she came up to him and said, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do all the work alone? Tell her to help me." |
But the Lord answered and said to her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; | 41But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things, |
but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her." | 42but one thing is needed. Mary has chosen the best part; it will not be taken away from her." |
