And Jesus was saying to them, "Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power."1Then he said to them, "Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God come in power."
Six days later, Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John, and brought them up on a high mountain by themselves. And He was transfigured before them;2After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain by themselves to be alone. He was transfigured in front of them,
and His garments became radiant and exceedingly white, as no launderer on earth can whiten them.3and his clothes became dazzling--extremely white as no launderer on earth could whiten them.
Elijah appeared to them along with Moses; and they were talking with Jesus.4Elijah appeared to them with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.
Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tabernacles, one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah."5Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi, it's good for us to be here. Let us set up three shelters: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah"--
For he did not know what to answer; for they became terrified.6because he did not know what to say, since they were terrified.
Then a cloud formed, overshadowing them, and a voice came out of the cloud, "This is My beloved Son, listen to Him!"7A cloud appeared, overshadowing them, and a voice came from the cloud: "This is my beloved Son; listen to him!"
All at once they looked around and saw no one with them anymore, except Jesus alone.8Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.
As they were coming down from the mountain, He gave them orders not to relate to anyone what they had seen, until the Son of Man rose from the dead.9As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
They seized upon that statement, discussing with one another what rising from the dead meant.10They kept this word to themselves, questioning what "rising from the dead" meant.
They asked Him, saying, "Why is it that the scribes say that Elijah must come first?"11Then they asked him, "Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?"
And He said to them, "Elijah does first come and restore all things. And yet how is it written of the Son of Man that He will suffer many things and be treated with contempt?12"Elijah does come first and restores all things," he replied. "Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be treated with contempt?
"But I say to you that Elijah has indeed come, and they did to him whatever they wished, just as it is written of him."13But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did whatever they pleased to him, just as it is written about him."
When they came back to the disciples, they saw a large crowd around them, and some scribes arguing with them.14When they came to the disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and scribes disputing with them.
Immediately, when the entire crowd saw Him, they were amazed and began running up to greet Him.15When the whole crowd saw him, they were amazed and ran to greet him.
And He asked them, "What are you discussing with them?"16He asked them, "What are you arguing with them about?"
And one of the crowd answered Him, "Teacher, I brought You my son, possessed with a spirit which makes him mute;17Someone from the crowd answered him, "Teacher, I brought my son to you. He has a spirit that makes him unable to speak.
and whenever it seizes him, it slams him to the ground and he foams at the mouth, and grinds his teeth and stiffens out. I told Your disciples to cast it out, and they could not do it."18Whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn't."
And He answered them and said, "O unbelieving generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring him to Me!"19He replied to them, "You unbelieving generation, how long will I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him to me."
They brought the boy to Him. When he saw Him, immediately the spirit threw him into a convulsion, and falling to the ground, he began rolling around and foaming at the mouth.20So they brought the boy to him. When the spirit saw him, it immediately threw the boy into convulsions. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.
And He asked his father, "How long has this been happening to him?" And he said, "From childhood.21"How long has this been happening to him?" Jesus asked his father. "From childhood," he said.
"It has often thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if You can do anything, take pity on us and help us!"22"And many times it has thrown him into fire or water to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us."
And Jesus said to him, "'If You can?' All things are possible to him who believes."23Jesus said to him, "'If you can'? Everything is possible for the one who believes."
Immediately the boy's father cried out and said, "I do believe; help my unbelief."24Immediately the father of the boy cried out, "I do believe; help my unbelief!"
When Jesus saw that a crowd was rapidly gathering, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "You deaf and mute spirit, I command you, come out of him and do not enter him again."25When Jesus saw that a crowd was quickly gathering, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "You mute and deaf spirit, I command you: Come out of him and never enter him again."
After crying out and throwing him into terrible convulsions, it came out; and the boy became so much like a corpse that most of them said, "He is dead!"26Then it came out, shrieking and throwing him into terrible convulsions. The boy became like a corpse, so that many said, "He's dead."
But Jesus took him by the hand and raised him; and he got up.27But Jesus, taking him by the hand, raised him, and he stood up.
When He came into the house, His disciples began questioning Him privately, "Why could we not drive it out?"28After he had gone into the house, his disciples asked him privately, "Why couldn't we drive it out?"
And He said to them, "This kind cannot come out by anything but prayer."29And he told them, "This kind can come out by nothing but prayer."
From there they went out and began to go through Galilee, and He did not want anyone to know about it.30Then they left that place and made their way through Galilee, but he did not want anyone to know it.
For He was teaching His disciples and telling them, "The Son of Man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill Him; and when He has been killed, He will rise three days later."31For he was teaching his disciples and telling them, "The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after he is killed, he will rise three days later."
But they did not understand this statement, and they were afraid to ask Him.32But they did not understand this statement, and they were afraid to ask him.
They came to Capernaum; and when He was in the house, He began to question them, "What were you discussing on the way?"33They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, "What were you arguing about on the way?"
But they kept silent, for on the way they had discussed with one another which of them was the greatest.34But they were silent, because on the way they had been arguing with one another about who was the greatest.
Sitting down, He called the twelve and said to them, "If anyone wants to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all."35Sitting down, he called the Twelve and said to them, "If anyone wants to be first, he must be last and servant of all."
Taking a child, He set him before them, and taking him in His arms, He said to them,36He took a child, had him stand among them, and taking him in his arms, he said to them,
"Whoever receives one child like this in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me does not receive Me, but Him who sent Me."37"Whoever welcomes one little child such as this in my name welcomes me. And whoever welcomes me does not welcome me, but him who sent me."
John said to Him, "Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we tried to prevent him because he was not following us."38John said to him, "Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him because he wasn't following us."
But Jesus said, "Do not hinder him, for there is no one who will perform a miracle in My name, and be able soon afterward to speak evil of Me.39"Don't stop him," said Jesus, "because there is no one who will perform a miracle in my name who can soon afterward speak evil of me.
"For he who is not against us is for us.40For whoever is not against us is for us.
"For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because of your name as followers of Christ, truly I say to you, he will not lose his reward.41And whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in my name, because you belong to Christ--truly I tell you, he will never lose his reward.
"Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe to stumble, it would be better for him if, with a heavy millstone hung around his neck, he had been cast into the sea.42"But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to fall away--it would be better for him if a heavy millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.
"If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life crippled, than, having your two hands, to go into hell, into the unquenchable fire,43"And if your hand causes you to fall away, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than to have two hands and go to hell, the unquenchable fire.
where THEIR WORM DOES NOT DIE, AND THE FIRE IS NOT QUENCHED.44
"If your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame, than, having your two feet, to be cast into hell,45And if your foot causes you to fall away, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.
where THEIR WORM DOES NOT DIE, AND THE FIRE IS NOT QUENCHED.46
"If your eye causes you to stumble, throw it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, than, having two eyes, to be cast into hell,47And if your eye causes you to fall away, gouge it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell,
where THEIR WORM DOES NOT DIE, AND THE FIRE IS NOT QUENCHED.48where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.
"For everyone will be salted with fire.49For everyone will be salted with fire.
"Salt is good; but if the salt becomes unsalty, with what will you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another."50Salt is good, but if the salt should lose its flavor, how can you season it? Have salt among yourselves, and be at peace with one another."
