Lord, you've been our refuge from generation to generation. | 1A Prayer of Moses the man of God. Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations. |
Before the mountains were formed or the earth and the world were brought forth, you are God from eternity to eternity. | 2Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God. |
You return people to dust merely by saying, "Return, you mortals!" | 3Thou turnest man to destruction; and sayest, Return, ye children of men. |
One thousand years in your sight are but a single day that passes by, just like a night watch. | 4For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night. |
You will sweep them away while they are asleep— by morning they are like growing grass. | 5Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep: in the morning they are like grass which groweth up. |
In the morning it blossoms and is renewed, but toward evening, it fades and withers. | 6In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth up; in the evening it is cut down, and withereth. |
Indeed, we are consumed by your anger and terrified by your wrath. | 7For we are consumed by thine anger, and by thy wrath are we troubled. |
You have set our iniquities before you, what we have concealed in the light of your presence. | 8Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance. |
All our days pass away in your wrath; our years fade away and end like a sigh. | 9For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told. |
We live for 70 years, or 80 years if we're healthy, yet even in the prime years there are troubles and sorrow. They pass by quickly and we fly away. | 10The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. |
Who can know the intensity of your anger? Because our fear of you matches your wrath, | 11Who knoweth the power of thine anger? even according to thy fear, so is thy wrath. |
teach us to keep account of our days so we may develop inner wisdom. | 12So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. |
Please return, LORD! When will it be? Comfort your servants. | 13Return, O LORD, how long? and let it repent thee concerning thy servants. |
Satisfy us in the morning with your gracious love so we may sing for joy and rejoice every day. | 14O satisfy us early with thy mercy; that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. |
Cause us to rejoice throughout the time when you have afflicted us, the years when we have known trouble. | 15Make us glad according to the days wherein thou hast afflicted us, and the years wherein we have seen evil. |
May your awesome deeds be revealed to your servants, as well as your splendor to their children. | 16Let thy work appear unto thy servants, and thy glory unto their children. |
May your favor be on us, Lord our God; make our endeavors successful; yes, make our endeavors secure! | 17And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it. |
