International Standard Version | Christian Standard Bible |
Lord, you've been our refuge from generation to generation. | 1Lord, you have been our refuge in every generation. |
Before the mountains were formed or the earth and the world were brought forth, you are God from eternity to eternity. | 2Before the mountains were born, before you gave birth to the earth and the world, from eternity to eternity, you are God. |
You return people to dust merely by saying, "Return, you mortals!" | 3You return mankind to the dust, saying, "Return, descendants of Adam." |
One thousand years in your sight are but a single day that passes by, just like a night watch. | 4For in your sight a thousand years are like yesterday that passes by, like a few hours of the night. |
You will sweep them away while they are asleep— by morning they are like growing grass. | 5You end their lives; they sleep. They are like grass that grows in the morning-- |
In the morning it blossoms and is renewed, but toward evening, it fades and withers. | 6in the morning it sprouts and grows; by evening it withers and dries up. |
Indeed, we are consumed by your anger and terrified by your wrath. | 7For we are consumed by your anger; we are terrified by your wrath. |
You have set our iniquities before you, what we have concealed in the light of your presence. | 8You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. |
All our days pass away in your wrath; our years fade away and end like a sigh. | 9For all our days ebb away under your wrath; we end our years like a sigh. |
We live for 70 years, or 80 years if we're healthy, yet even in the prime years there are troubles and sorrow. They pass by quickly and we fly away. | 10Our lives last seventy years or, if we are strong, eighty years. Even the best of them are struggle and sorrow; indeed, they pass quickly and we fly away. |
Who can know the intensity of your anger? Because our fear of you matches your wrath, | 11Who understands the power of your anger? Your wrath matches the fear that is due you. |
teach us to keep account of our days so we may develop inner wisdom. | 12Teach us to number our days carefully so that we may develop wisdom in our hearts. |
Please return, LORD! When will it be? Comfort your servants. | 13LORD--how long? Turn and have compassion on your servants. |
Satisfy us in the morning with your gracious love so we may sing for joy and rejoice every day. | 14Satisfy us in the morning with your faithful love so that we may shout with joy and be glad all our days. |
Cause us to rejoice throughout the time when you have afflicted us, the years when we have known trouble. | 15Make us rejoice for as many days as you have humbled us, for as many years as we have seen adversity. |
May your awesome deeds be revealed to your servants, as well as your splendor to their children. | 16Let your work be seen by your servants, and your splendor by their children. |
May your favor be on us, Lord our God; make our endeavors successful; yes, make our endeavors secure! | 17Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us; establish for us the work of our hands--establish the work of our hands! |
