LORD, God of my salvation, by day and by night I cry out before you. | 1O LORD, God of my salvation, I cry out day and night before you. |
Let my prayer come before you; listen to my cry. | 2Let my prayer come before you; incline your ear to my cry! |
For my life is filled with troubles as I approach Sheol. | 3For my soul is full of troubles, and my life draws near to Sheol. |
I am considered as one of those descending into the Pit, like a mighty man without strength, | 4I am counted among those who go down to the pit; I am a man who has no strength, |
released to remain with the dead, lying in a grave like a corpse, remembered no longer, and cut off from your power. | 5like one set loose among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, like those whom you remember no more, for they are cut off from your hand. |
You have assigned me to the lowest part of the Pit, to the darkest depths. | 6You have put me in the depths of the pit, in the regions dark and deep. |
Your anger lies heavily upon me; you pound me with all your waves. Interlude | 7Your wrath lies heavy upon me, and you overwhelm me with all your waves. Selah |
You caused my acquaintances to shun me; you make me extremely abhorrent to them. Restrained, I am unable to go out. | 8You have caused my companions to shun me; you have made me a horror to them. I am shut in so that I cannot escape; |
My eyes languish on account of my affliction; all day long I call out to you, LORD, I spread out my hands to you. | 9my eye grows dim through sorrow. Every day I call upon you, O LORD; I spread out my hands to you. |
Can you perform wonders for the dead? Can departed spirits stand up to praise you? Interlude | 10Do you work wonders for the dead? Do the departed rise up to praise you? Selah |
Can your gracious love be declared in the grave or your faithfulness in Abaddon? | 11Is your steadfast love declared in the grave, or your faithfulness in Abaddon? |
Can your awesome deeds be known in darkness or your righteousness in the land of oblivion? | 12Are your wonders known in the darkness, or your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness? |
As for me, I cry out to you LORD, and in the morning my prayer greets you. | 13But I, O LORD, cry to you; in the morning my prayer comes before you. |
Why, LORD, have you rejected me? Why have you hidden your face from me? | 14O LORD, why do you cast my soul away? Why do you hide your face from me? |
Since my youth I have been oppressed and in danger of death. I bear your dread and am overwhelmed. | 15Afflicted and close to death from my youth up, I suffer your terrors; I am helpless. |
Your burning anger overwhelms me; your terrors destroy me. | 16Your wrath has swept over me; your dreadful assaults destroy me. |
Like waters, they engulf me all day long; they surround me on all sides. | 17They surround me like a flood all day long; they close in on me together. |
You caused my friend and neighbor to shun me; and my acquaintances are confused. | 18You have caused my beloved and my friend to shun me; my companions have become darkness. |
