| 1Now, the descendants of Reuben and descendants of Gad happened to be joint owners of a very large herd of cattle. When they observed that Jazer and Gilead were good grazing lands for cattle, | 1The Reubenites and Gadites had a very large number of livestock. When they surveyed the lands of Jazer and Gilead, they saw that the region was a good one for livestock. |
| 2the descendants of Gad and descendants of Reuben approached Moses, Eleazar the priest, and the leaders of the community and said, | 2So the Gadites and Reubenites came to Moses, the priest Eleazar, and the leaders of the community and said: |
| 3"Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon— | 3"The territory of Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon, |
| 4the land that the LORD defeated in the sight of the community of Israel—is perfect for cattle and your servants have cattle. | 4which the LORD struck down before the community of Israel, is good land for livestock, and your servants own livestock." |
| 5If we've found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants as our possession instead of us crossing the Jordan River." | 5They said, "If we have found favor with you, let this land be given to your servants as a possession. Don't make us cross the Jordan." |
| 6"Will your relatives have to go to war while you remain here?" Moses asked the descendants of Gad and descendants of Reuben in response. | 6But Moses asked the Gadites and Reubenites, "Should your brothers go to war while you stay here? |
| 7"Why would you discourage the Israelis from crossing over to the land that the LORD has given them? | 7Why are you discouraging the Israelites from crossing into the land the LORD has given them? |
| 8That's what your ancestors did when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to explore the land. | 8That's what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land. |
| 9When they arrived in the Eshcol Valley and saw the land, they discouraged the Israelis from entering the land that the LORD had given them. | 9After they went up as far as Eshcol Valley and saw the land, they discouraged the Israelites from entering the land the LORD had given them. |
| 10That's why the LORD's anger flared up that day and he promised by an oath that | 10So the LORD's anger burned that day, and he swore an oath: |
| 11Not one of the men who went up from Egypt, from 20 years old and above, will see the land that I promised to give to their ancestors, that is, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, because none of them followed me wholeheartedly, | 11'Because they did not remain loyal to me, none of the men twenty years old or more who came up from Egypt will see the land I swore to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob-- |
| 12except Jephunneh's son Caleb, the Kenizzite, and Nun's son Joshua. They've wholeheartedly followed the LORD.' | 12none except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, because they did remain loyal to the LORD.' |
| 13"The LORD's anger had flared up against Israel so that he made them wander in the wilderness for 40 years until that whole generation, who committed evil in the eyes of the LORD, had died. | 13The LORD's anger burned against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years until the whole generation that had done what was evil in the LORD's sight was gone. |
| 14And now, look! You're acting just like your ancestors, like a brood of sinful men, who are provoking the fierce anger of the LORD against the Israelis one step at a time. | 14And here you, a brood of sinners, stand in your fathers' place adding even more to the LORD's burning anger against Israel. |
| 15If you stop following him, he will once again abandon them in the wilderness. You'll end up destroying this entire people." | 15If you turn back from following him, he will once again leave this people in the wilderness, and you will destroy all of them." |
| 16Then they approached him and said, "Here's where we're going to build corrals for our cattle and cities for our families, | 16Then they approached him and said, "We want to build sheep pens here for our livestock and cities for our dependents. |
| 17but we will keep ourselves armed and stay ready to go with the Israelis until we've brought them to their own places. Our families intend to live in fortified cities in the presence of the inhabitants of the land, | 17But we will arm ourselves and be ready to go ahead of the Israelites until we have brought them into their place. Meanwhile, our dependents will remain in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land. |
| 18but we won't return to our homes until every Israeli has taken possession of each of their inheritances, | 18We will not return to our homes until each of the Israelites has taken possession of his inheritance. |
| 19since our inheritance will not be with them across the Jordan River and beyond. Instead, our inheritance is on this side of the Jordan River, facing eastward." | 19Yet we will not have an inheritance with them across the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance will be across the Jordan to the east." |
| 20"If you do this," Moses replied to them, "that is, if you equip yourselves for war in the LORD's presence | 20Moses replied to them, "If you do this--if you arm yourselves for battle before the LORD, |
| 21and every one of your armed soldiers crosses over the Jordan River in the presence of the LORD until he has dispossessed his enemies ahead of him | 21and every one of your armed men crosses the Jordan before the LORD until he has driven his enemies from his presence, |
| 22and subjugated the land before him, then afterwards when you return, you'll be able to stand blameless before the LORD and before Israel. This land will then be your possession before the LORD. | 22and the land is subdued before the LORD--afterward you may return and be free from obligation to the LORD and to Israel. And this land will belong to you as a possession before the LORD. |
| 23"But if you won't do so, look out! You will be sinning against the LORD. Be certain of this, that your sin will catch up to you! | 23But if you don't do this, you will certainly sin against the LORD; be sure your sin will catch up with you. |
| 24So after you've built cities for your families and corrals for your cattle, be sure to keep your promises." | 24Build cities for your dependents and pens for your flocks, but do what you have promised." |
| 25Then the descendants of Gad and descendants of Reuben spoke up. "Your servants will do exactly what our master has commanded." They said. | 25The Gadites and Reubenites answered Moses, "Your servants will do just as my lord commands. |
| 26"Our children, wives, flocks, and all our cattle will be settled in the cities of Gilead, | 26Our dependents, wives, livestock, and all our animals will remain here in the cities of Gilead, |
| 27but every soldier that we've equipped for battle will cross the Jordan River in the presence of the LORD, as our master has spoken." | 27but your servants are equipped for war before the LORD and will go across to the battle as my lord orders." |
| 28So Moses instructed Eleazar the priest and Nun's son Joshua, and the officers of the ancestral tribes of the Israelis, | 28So Moses gave orders about them to the priest Eleazar, Joshua son of Nun, and the family heads of the Israelite tribes. |
| 29telling them, "If the descendants of Gad and descendants of Reuben cross over the Jordan River with you, that is, all of their soldiers who've been equipped for battle in the LORD's presence, so that the land is subjugated right before your eyes, then you are to give them the land of Gilead as their possession. | 29Moses told them, "If the Gadites and Reubenites cross the Jordan with you, every man in battle formation before the LORD, and the land is subdued before you, you are to give them the land of Gilead as a possession. |
| 30But if the armed men don't cross over with you, then they won't have any possession in the land of Canaan." | 30But if they don't go across with you in battle formation, they must accept land in Canaan with you." |
| 31"We'll do just what the LORD told your servants," the descendants of Gad and the descendants of Reuben responded. | 31The Gadites and Reubenites replied, "What the LORD has spoken to your servants is what we will do. |
| 32"We are to cross over in battle array in the LORD's presence into the land of Canaan, and afterwards the possession of our inheritance will be on this side of the Jordan River." | 32We will cross over in battle formation before the LORD into the land of Canaan, but we will keep our hereditary possession across the Jordan." |
| 33So Moses gave to the descendants of Gad, to the descendants of Reuben, and to the half-tribe of Joseph's son Manasseh the kingdom of Sihon, the king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og, the king of Bashan, the whole land with its cities, and even the territories surrounding it. | 33So Moses gave them--the Gadites, Reubenites, and half the tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph--the kingdom of King Sihon of the Amorites and the kingdom of King Og of Bashan, the land including its cities with the territories surrounding them. |
| 34The descendants of Gad rebuilt Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer, | 34The Gadites rebuilt Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer, |
| 35Atrothshophan, Jazer, Jogbehah, | 35Atroth-shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah, |
| 36Beth-nimrah, and Beth-haran as fortified cities with corrals for sheep. | 36Beth-nimrah, and Beth-haran as fortified cities, and built sheep pens. |
| 37The descendants of Reuben rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim, | 37The Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim, |
| 38Nebo, Baal-meon (after having changed their names), and Sibmah. The cities that they rebuilt were renamed. | 38as well as Nebo and Baal-meon (whose names were changed), and Sibmah. They gave names to the cities they rebuilt. |
| 39The descendants of Manasseh's son Machir attacked Gilead and then captured and dispossessed the Amorites who were there. | 39The descendants of Machir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, captured it, and drove out the Amorites who were there. |
| 40That's why Moses gave Gilead to Manasseh's son Machir, who lived there at the time. | 40So Moses gave Gilead to the clan of Machir son of Manasseh, and they settled in it. |
| 41Manasseh's son Jair captured their towns and renamed them Havvoth-jair. | 41Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, went and captured their villages, which he renamed Jair's Villages. |
| 42Nobah captured Kenath and its towns and renamed it Nobah after himself. | 42Nobah went and captured Kenath with its surrounding villages and called it Nobah after his own name. |
