Holman Christian Standard Bible | International Standard Version |
Imitate me, as I also imitate Christ. | 1Imitate me, as I do the Messiah. |
Now I praise you because you always remember me and keep the traditions just as I delivered them to you. | 2I praise you for remembering everything I told you and for holding to the traditions that I passed on to you. |
But I want you to know that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of the woman, and God is the head of Christ. | 3Now I want you to realize that the Messiah is the head of every man, and man is the head of the woman, and God is the head of the Messiah. |
Every man who prays or prophesies with something on his head dishonors his head. | 4Every man who prays or prophesies with something on his head dishonors his head, |
But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, since that is one and the same as having her head shaved. | 5and every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, which is the same as having her head shaved. |
So if a woman's head is not covered, her hair should be cut off. But if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, she should be covered. | 6So if a woman does not cover her head, she should cut off her hair. If it is a disgrace for a woman to cut off her hair or shave her head, let her cover her own head. |
A man, in fact, should not cover his head, because he is God's image and glory, but woman is man's glory. | 7A man should not cover his head, because he exists as God's image and glory. But the woman is man's glory. |
For man did not come from woman, but woman came from man. | 8For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; |
And man was not created for woman, but woman for man. | 9and man was not created for woman, but woman for man. |
This is why a woman should have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. | 10This is why a woman should have authority over her own head: because of the angels. |
In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, and man is not independent of woman. | 11In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man of woman. |
For just as woman came from man, so man comes through woman, and all things come from God. | 12For as woman came from man, so man comes through woman. But everything comes from God. |
Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? | 13Decide for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? |
Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair it is a disgrace to him, | 14Nature itself teaches you neither that it is disgraceful for a man to have long hair |
but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her as a covering. | 15nor that hair is a woman's glory, since hair is given as a substitute for coverings. |
But if anyone wants to argue about this, we have no other custom, nor do the churches of God. | 16But if anyone wants to argue about this, we do not have any custom like this, nor do any of God's churches. |
Now in giving the following instruction I do not praise you, since you come together not for the better but for the worse. | 17Now I am not praising you in giving you the following instructions. When you gather, it is not for the better but for the worse. |
For to begin with, I hear that when you come together as a church there are divisions among you, and in part I believe it. | 18For in the first place, I hear that when you gather as a church there are divisions among you, and I partly believe it. |
There must, indeed, be factions among you, so that those who are approved may be recognized among you. | 19Of course, there must be factions among you to show which of you are genuine! |
Therefore, when you come together, it is not really to eat the Lord's Supper. | 20When you gather in the same place, it is not to eat the Lord's Supper. |
For at the meal, each one eats his own supper ahead of others. So one person is hungry while another gets drunk! | 21For as you eat, each of you rushes to eat his own supper, and one person goes hungry while another gets drunk. |
Don't you have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you look down on the church of God and embarrass those who have nothing? What should I say to you? Should I praise you? I do not praise you for this! | 22You have homes in which to eat and drink, don't you? Or do you despise God's church and humiliate those who have nothing? What should I say to you? Should I praise you? I will not praise you for this! |
For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: On the night when He was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took bread, | 23For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you—how the Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took a loaf of bread, |
gave thanks, broke it, and said, "This is My body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of Me." | 24gave thanks for it, and broke it in pieces, saying, "This is my body that is for you. Keep doing this in memory of me." |
In the same way, after supper He also took the cup and said, "This cup is the new covenant established by My blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." | 25He did the same with the cup after the supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. As often as you drink from it, keep doing this in memory of me." |
For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes. | 26For as often as you eat this bread and drink from this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. |
Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy way will be guilty of sin against the body and blood of the Lord. | 27Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks from the cup in an unworthy manner will be held responsible for the Lord's body and blood. |
So a man should examine himself; in this way he should eat the bread and drink from the cup. | 28A person must examine himself and then eat the bread and drink from the cup, |
For whoever eats and drinks without recognizing the body, eats and drinks judgment on himself. | 29because whoever eats and drinks without recognizing the body, eats and drinks judgment on himself. |
This is why many are sick and ill among you, and many have fallen asleep. | 30That's why so many of you are weak and sick and a considerable number are dying. |
If we were properly evaluating ourselves, we would not be judged, | 31But if we judged ourselves correctly, we would not be judged. |
but when we are judged, we are disciplined by the Lord, so that we may not be condemned with the world. | 32Now, while we are being judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so we won't be condemned along with the world. |
Therefore, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for one another. | 33Therefore, my brothers, when you gather to eat, wait for each other. |
If anyone is hungry, he should eat at home, so that when you gather together you will not come under judgment. And I will give instructions about the other matters whenever I come. | 34If anyone is hungry, he should eat at home, so that when you gather it may not bring judgment on you. And when I come I will give instructions concerning the other matters. |
