English Standard Version | New Living Translation |
“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. | 1 “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. |
In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? | 2 There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? |
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. | 3 When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am. |
And you know the way to where I am going.” | 4 And you know the way to where I am going.” |
Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” | 5“No, we don’t know, Lord,” Thomas said. “We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?” |
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. | 6Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. |
If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” | 7 If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is. From now on, you do know him and have seen him!” |
Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” | 8Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.” |
Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? | 9Jesus replied, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and yet you still don’t know who I am? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father! So why are you asking me to show him to you? |
Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. | 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I speak are not my own, but my Father who lives in me does his work through me. |
Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves. | 11 Just believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Or at least believe because of the work you have seen me do. |
“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. | 12 “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. |
Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. | 13 You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father. |
If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it. | 14 Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it! Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit |
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. | 15 “If you love me, obey my commandments. |
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, | 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. |
even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. | 17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you. |
“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. | 18 No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you. |
Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. | 19 Soon the world will no longer see me, but you will see me. Since I live, you also will live. |
In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. | 20 When I am raised to life again, you will know that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. |
Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” | 21 Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them.” |
Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” | 22Judas (not Judas Iscariot, but the other disciple with that name) said to him, “Lord, why are you going to reveal yourself only to us and not to the world at large?” |
Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. | 23Jesus replied, “All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them. |
Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me. | 24 Anyone who doesn’t love me will not obey me. And remember, my words are not my own. What I am telling you is from the Father who sent me. |
“These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. | 25 I am telling you these things now while I am still with you. |
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. | 26 But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you. |
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. | 27 “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid. |
You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. | 28 Remember what I told you: I am going away, but I will come back to you again. If you really loved me, you would be happy that I am going to the Father, who is greater than I am. |
And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. | 29 I have told you these things before they happen so that when they do happen, you will believe. |
I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me, | 30 “I don’t have much more time to talk to you, because the ruler of this world approaches. He has no power over me, |
but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here. | 31 but I will do what the Father requires of me, so that the world will know that I love the Father. Come, let’s be going. |
