“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. | 1"Don't let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. |
In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? | 2There are many rooms in my Father's house. If there weren't, I wouldn't have told you that I am going away to prepare a place for you, would I? |
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. | 3And since I'm going away to prepare a place for you, I'll come back again and welcome you into my presence, so that you may be where I am. |
And you know the way to where I am going.” | 4You know where I am going, and you know the way." |
Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” | 5Thomas asked him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?" |
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. | 6Jesus told him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. |
If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” | 7If you have known me, you will also know my Father. From now on you know him and have seen him." |
Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” | 8Philip told him, "Lord, show us the Father, and that will satisfy us." |
Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? | 9"Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me?" Jesus asked him. "The person who has seen me has seen the Father. So how can you say, 'Show us the Father'? |
Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. | 10You believe, don't you, that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I don't speak on my own. It is the Father who dwells in me and who carries out his work. |
Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves. | 11Believe me, I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Otherwise, believe me because of what I've been doing. |
“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. | 12Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, the one who believes in me will also do what I'm doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I'm going to the Father. |
Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. | 13I'll do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. |
If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it. | 14If you ask me for anything in my name, I will do it." |
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. | 15"If you love me, keep my commandments. |
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, | 16I will ask the Father to give you another Helper, to be with you always. |
even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. | 17He is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor recognizes him. But you recognize him, because he lives with you and will be in you. |
“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. | 18I'm not going to forsake you like orphans. I will come back to you. |
Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. | 19"In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me. Because I live, you will live also. |
In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. | 20At that time, you'll know that I am in my Father, that you are in me, and that I am in you. |
Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” | 21The person who has my commandments and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I, too, will love him and reveal myself to him." |
Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” | 22Judas (not Iscariot) asked him, "Lord, how is it that you are going to reveal yourself to us and not to the world?" |
Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. | 23Jesus answered him, "If anyone loves me, he will keep my word. Then my Father will love him, and we will go to him and make our home within him. |
Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me. | 24The one who doesn't love me doesn't keep my words. The words that you're hearing me say are not mine, but come from the Father who sent me. |
“These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. | 25"I have told you this while I am still with you. |
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. | 26But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of everything that I have told you. |
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. | 27I'm leaving you at peace. I'm giving you my own peace. I'm not giving it to you as the world gives. So don't let your hearts be troubled, and don't be afraid. |
You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. | 28You have heard me tell you, 'I'm going away, but I'm coming back to you.' If you loved me, you would rejoice that I'm going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I am. |
And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. | 29I've told you this now, before I leave, so that when I do leave, you will believe. |
I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me, | 30I won't talk with you much longer, because the ruler of this world is coming. He has no power over me. |
but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here. | 31But I'm doing what the Father has commanded me, to let the world know that I love the Father. Get up! Let us leave this place." |
