He entered Jericho and was passing through.1Jesus entered Jericho and made his way through the town.
There was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich.2There was a man there named Zacchaeus. He was the chief tax collector in the region, and he had become very rich.
He was trying to see who Jesus was, but he was not able because of the crowd, since he was a short man.3He tried to get a look at Jesus, but he was too short to see over the crowd.
So running ahead, he climbed up a sycamore tree to see Jesus, since he was about to pass that way.4So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree beside the road, for Jesus was going to pass that way.
When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down because today it is necessary for me to stay at your house.”5When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. “Zacchaeus!” he said. “Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.”
So he quickly came down and welcomed him joyfully.6Zacchaeus quickly climbed down and took Jesus to his house in great excitement and joy.
All who saw it began to complain, “He’s gone to stay with a sinful man.”7But the people were displeased. “He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner,” they grumbled.
But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Look, I’ll give half of my possessions to the poor, Lord. And if I have extorted anything from anyone, I’ll pay back four times as much.”8Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, “I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!”
“Today salvation has come to this house,” Jesus told him, “because he too is a son of Abraham.9Jesus responded, “Salvation has come to this home today, for this man has shown himself to be a true son of Abraham.
For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost.”10 For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.” Parable of the Ten Servants
As they were listening to this, he went on to tell a parable because he was near Jerusalem, and they thought the kingdom of God was going to appear right away.11The crowd was listening to everything Jesus said. And because he was nearing Jerusalem, he told them a story to correct the impression that the Kingdom of God would begin right away.
Therefore he said: “A nobleman traveled to a far country to receive for himself authority to be king and then to return.12He said, “A nobleman was called away to a distant empire to be crowned king and then return.
He called ten of his servants, gave them ten minas, and told them, ‘Engage in business until I come back.’13 Before he left, he called together ten of his servants and divided among them ten pounds of silver, saying, ‘Invest this for me while I am gone.’
“But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We don’t want this man to rule over us.’14 But his people hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We do not want him to be our king.’
“At his return, having received the authority to be king, he summoned those servants he had given the money to, so that he could find out how much they had made in business.15 “After he was crowned king, he returned and called in the servants to whom he had given the money. He wanted to find out what their profits were.
The first came forward and said, ‘Master, your mina has earned ten more minas.’16 The first servant reported, ‘Master, I invested your money and made ten times the original amount!’
“ ‘Well done, good servant! ’ he told him. ‘Because you have been faithful in a very small matter, have authority over ten towns.’17 “‘Well done!’ the king exclaimed. ‘You are a good servant. You have been faithful with the little I entrusted to you, so you will be governor of ten cities as your reward.’
“The second came and said, ‘Master, your mina has made five minas.’18 “The next servant reported, ‘Master, I invested your money and made five times the original amount.’
“So he said to him, ‘You will be over five towns.’19 “‘Well done!’ the king said. ‘You will be governor over five cities.’
“And another came and said, ‘Master, here is your mina. I have kept it safe in a cloth20 “But the third servant brought back only the original amount of money and said, ‘Master, I hid your money and kept it safe.
because I was afraid of you since you’re a harsh man: you collect what you didn’t deposit and reap what you didn’t sow.’21 I was afraid because you are a hard man to deal with, taking what isn’t yours and harvesting crops you didn’t plant.’
“He told him, ‘I will condemn you by what you have said, you evil servant! If you knew I was a harsh man, collecting what I didn’t deposit and reaping what I didn’t sow,22 “‘You wicked servant!’ the king roared. ‘Your own words condemn you. If you knew that I’m a hard man who takes what isn’t mine and harvests crops I didn’t plant,
why, then, didn’t you put my money in the bank? And when I returned, I would have collected it with interest.’23 why didn’t you deposit my money in the bank? At least I could have gotten some interest on it.’
So he said to those standing there, ‘Take the mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’24 “Then, turning to the others standing nearby, the king ordered, ‘Take the money from this servant, and give it to the one who has ten pounds.’
“But they said to him, ‘Master, he has ten minas.’25 “‘But, master,’ they said, ‘he already has ten pounds!’
“ ‘I tell you, that to everyone who has, more will be given; and from the one who does not have, even what he does have will be taken away.26 “‘Yes,’ the king replied, ‘and to those who use well what they are given, even more will be given. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away.
But bring here these enemies of mine, who did not want me to rule over them, and slaughter them in my presence.’ ”27 And as for these enemies of mine who didn’t want me to be their king—bring them in and execute them right here in front of me.’” Jesus’ Triumphant Entry
When he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.28After telling this story, Jesus went on toward Jerusalem, walking ahead of his disciples.
As he approached Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples29As he came to the towns of Bethphage and Bethany on the Mount of Olives, he sent two disciples ahead.
and said, “Go into the village ahead of you. As you enter it, you will find a young donkey tied there, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it.30 “Go into that village over there,” he told them. “As you enter it, you will see a young donkey tied there that no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here.
If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it? ’ say this: ‘The Lord needs it.’ ”31 If anyone asks, ‘Why are you untying that colt?’ just say, ‘The Lord needs it.’”
So those who were sent left and found it just as he had told them.32So they went and found the colt, just as Jesus had said.
As they were untying the young donkey, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the donkey? ”33And sure enough, as they were untying it, the owners asked them, “Why are you untying that colt?”
“The Lord needs it,” they said.34And the disciples simply replied, “The Lord needs it.”
Then they brought it to Jesus, and after throwing their clothes on the donkey, they helped Jesus get on it.35So they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their garments over it for him to ride on.
As he was going along, they were spreading their clothes on the road.36As he rode along, the crowds spread out their garments on the road ahead of him.
Now he came near the path down the Mount of Olives, and the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles they had seen:37When he reached the place where the road started down the Mount of Olives, all of his followers began to shout and sing as they walked along, praising God for all the wonderful miracles they had seen.
Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest heaven!38“Blessings on the King who comes in the name of the LORD! Peace in heaven, and glory in highest heaven!”
Some of the Pharisees from the crowd told him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.”39But some of the Pharisees among the crowd said, “Teacher, rebuke your followers for saying things like that!”
He answered, “I tell you, if they were to keep silent, the stones would cry out.”40He replied, “If they kept quiet, the stones along the road would burst into cheers!” Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem
As he approached and saw the city, he wept for it,41But as he came closer to Jerusalem and saw the city ahead, he began to weep.
saying, “If you knew this day what would bring peace --but now it is hidden from your eyes.42 “How I wish today that you of all people would understand the way to peace. But now it is too late, and peace is hidden from your eyes.
For the days will come on you when your enemies will build a barricade around you, surround you, and hem you in on every side.43 Before long your enemies will build ramparts against your walls and encircle you and close in on you from every side.
They will crush you and your children among you to the ground, and they will not leave one stone on another in your midst, because you did not recognize the time when God visited you.”44 They will crush you into the ground, and your children with you. Your enemies will not leave a single stone in place, because you did not recognize it when God visited you. ” Jesus Clears the Temple
He went into the temple and began to throw out those who were selling,45Then Jesus entered the Temple and began to drive out the people selling animals for sacrifices.
and he said, “It is written, my house will be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves! ”46He said to them, “The Scriptures declare, ‘My Temple will be a house of prayer,’ but you have turned it into a den of thieves.”
Every day he was teaching in the temple. The chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people were looking for a way to kill him,47After that, he taught daily in the Temple, but the leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the other leaders of the people began planning how to kill him.
but they could not find a way to do it, because all the people were captivated by what they heard.48But they could think of nothing, because all the people hung on every word he said.
