When the day of Pentecost had arrived, they were all together in one place.1When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.
Suddenly a sound like that of a violent rushing wind came from heaven, and it filled the whole house where they were staying.2And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
They saw tongues like flames of fire that separated and rested on each one of them.3And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them.
Then they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them.4And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.
Now there were Jews staying in Jerusalem, devout people from every nation under heaven.5Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation under heaven.
When this sound occurred, a crowd came together and was confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language.6And when this sound occurred, the crowd came together, and were bewildered because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own language.
They were astounded and amazed, saying, "Look, aren't all these who are speaking Galileans?7They were amazed and astonished, saying, "Why, are not all these who are speaking Galileans?
How is it that each of us can hear them in our own native language?8"And how is it that we each hear them in our own language to which we were born?
Parthians, Medes, Elamites; those who live in Mesopotamia, in Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,9"Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts),10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya around Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,
Cretans and Arabs--we hear them declaring the magnificent acts of God in our own tongues."11Cretans and Arabs-- we hear them in our own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God."
They were all astounded and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?"12And they all continued in amazement and great perplexity, saying to one another, "What does this mean?"
But some sneered and said, "They're drunk on new wine."13But others were mocking and saying, "They are full of sweet wine."
Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed to them: "Fellow Jews and all you residents of Jerusalem, let me explain this to you and pay attention to my words.14But Peter, taking his stand with the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: "Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and give heed to my words.
For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it's only nine in the morning.15"For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only the third hour of the day;
On the contrary, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:16but this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel:
And it will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all people; then your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.17'AND IT SHALL BE IN THE LAST DAYS,' God says, 'THAT I WILL POUR FORTH OF MY SPIRIT ON ALL MANKIND; AND YOUR SONS AND YOUR DAUGHTERS SHALL PROPHESY, AND YOUR YOUNG MEN SHALL SEE VISIONS, AND YOUR OLD MEN SHALL DREAM DREAMS;
I will even pour out my Spirit on my servants in those days, both men and women and they will prophesy.18EVEN ON MY BONDSLAVES, BOTH MEN AND WOMEN, I WILL IN THOSE DAYS POUR FORTH OF MY SPIRIT And they shall prophesy.
I will display wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below: blood and fire and a cloud of smoke.19'AND I WILL GRANT WONDERS IN THE SKY ABOVE AND SIGNS ON THE EARTH BELOW, BLOOD, AND FIRE, AND VAPOR OF SMOKE.
The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the great and glorious day of the Lord comes.20'THE SUN WILL BE TURNED INTO DARKNESS AND THE MOON INTO BLOOD, BEFORE THE GREAT AND GLORIOUS DAY OF THE LORD SHALL COME.
Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.21'AND IT SHALL BE THAT EVERYONE WHO CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.'
"Fellow Israelites, listen to these words: This Jesus of Nazareth was a man attested to you by God with miracles, wonders, and signs that God did among you through him, just as you yourselves know.22"Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know--
Though he was delivered up according to God's determined plan and foreknowledge, you used lawless people to nail him to a cross and kill him.23this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death.
God raised him up, ending the pains of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by death.24"But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power.
For David says of him: I saw the Lord ever before me; because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.25"For David says of Him, 'I SAW THE LORD ALWAYS IN MY PRESENCE; FOR HE IS AT MY RIGHT HAND, SO THAT I WILL NOT BE SHAKEN.
Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices. Moreover, my flesh will rest in hope,26'THEREFORE MY HEART WAS GLAD AND MY TONGUE EXULTED; MOREOVER MY FLESH ALSO WILL LIVE IN HOPE;
because you will not abandon me in Hades or allow your holy one to see decay.27BECAUSE YOU WILL NOT ABANDON MY SOUL TO HADES, NOR ALLOW YOUR HOLY ONE TO UNDERGO DECAY.
You have revealed the paths of life to me; you will fill me with gladness in your presence.28'YOU HAVE MADE KNOWN TO ME THE WAYS OF LIFE; YOU WILL MAKE ME FULL OF GLADNESS WITH YOUR PRESENCE.'
"Brothers and sisters, I can confidently speak to you about the patriarch David: He is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.29"Brethren, I may confidently say to you regarding the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.
Since he was a prophet, he knew that God had sworn an oath to him to seat one of his descendants on his throne.30"And so, because he was a prophet and knew that GOD HAD SWORN TO HIM WITH AN OATH TO SEAT one OF HIS DESCENDANTS ON HIS THRONE,
Seeing what was to come, he spoke concerning the resurrection of the Messiah: He was not abandoned in Hades, and his flesh did not experience decay.31he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that HE WAS NEITHER ABANDONED TO HADES, NOR DID His flesh SUFFER DECAY.
"God has raised this Jesus; we are all witnesses of this.32"This Jesus God raised up again, to which we are all witnesses.
Therefore, since he has been exalted to the right hand of God and has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit, he has poured out what you both see and hear.33"Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this which you both see and hear.
For it was not David who ascended into the heavens, but he himself says: The Lord declared to my Lord, 'Sit at my right hand34"For it was not David who ascended into heaven, but he himself says: 'THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, "SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND,
until I make your enemies your footstool.'35UNTIL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES A FOOTSTOOL FOR YOUR FEET."'
"Therefore let all the house of Israel know with certainty that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah."36"Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ-- this Jesus whom you crucified."
When they heard this, they were pierced to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles: "Brothers, what should we do?"37Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?"
Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.38Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
For the promise is for you and for your children, and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call."39"For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself."
With many other words he testified and strongly urged them, saying, "Be saved from this corrupt generation!"40And with many other words he solemnly testified and kept on exhorting them, saying, "Be saved from this perverse generation!"
So those who accepted his message were baptized, and that day about three thousand people were added to them.41So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls.
They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer.42They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and signs were being performed through the apostles.43Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles.
Now all the believers were together and held all things in common.44And all those who had believed were together and had all things in common;
They sold their possessions and property and distributed the proceeds to all, as any had need.45and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need.
Every day they devoted themselves to meeting together in the temple, and broke bread from house to house. They ate their food with joyful and sincere hearts,46Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart,
praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. Every day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.47praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.
