| 18Truly, truly, I tell you, when you were young, you dressed yourself and walked where you wanted; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” | 18Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” |
| 19Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. And after He had said this, He told him, “Follow Me.” | 19(This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, “Follow me.” |
| 20Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them. He was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper to ask, “Lord, who is going to betray You?” | 20Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them, the one who also had leaned back against him during the supper and had said, “Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?” |

| 22Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain until I return, what is that to you? You follow Me!” | 22Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!” |
| 23Because of this, the rumor spread among the brothers that this disciple would not die. However, Jesus did not say that he would not die, but only, “If I want him to remain until I return, what is that to you?” | 23So the saying spread abroad among the brothers that this disciple was not to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die, but, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?” |
| 24This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who has written them down. And we know that his testimony is true. | 24This is the disciple who is bearing witness about these things, and who has written these things, and we know that his testimony is true. |
| 25There are many more things that Jesus did. If all of them were written down, I suppose that not even the world itself would have space for the books that would be written. | 25Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. |
