Unity in the Body
(Psalm 133:1-3; 1 Corinthians 1:10-17)
1Παρακαλῶ (Exhort) οὖν (therefore) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐγὼ (I), ὁ (the) δέσμιος (prisoner) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord), ἀξίως (worthily) περιπατῆσαι (to walk) τῆς (of the) κλήσεως (calling) ἧς (to which) ἐκλήθητε (you were called),
2μετὰ (with) πάσης (all) ταπεινοφροσύνης (humility) καὶ (and) πραΰτητος (gentleness), μετὰ (with) μακροθυμίας (patience), ἀνεχόμενοι (bearing with) ἀλλήλων (one another) ἐν (in) ἀγάπῃ (love),
3σπουδάζοντες (being diligent) τηρεῖν (to keep) τὴν (the) ἑνότητα (unity) τοῦ (of the) Πνεύματος (Spirit) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) συνδέσμῳ (bond) τῆς (-) εἰρήνης (of peace);
4ἓν (one) σῶμα (body) καὶ (and) ἓν (one) Πνεῦμα (Spirit), καθὼς (just as) καὶ (also) ἐκλήθητε (you were called) ἐν (into) μιᾷ (one) ἐλπίδι (hope) τῆς (of the) κλήσεως (calling) ὑμῶν (of you);
5εἷς (one) Κύριος (Lord), μία (one) πίστις (faith), ἓν (one) βάπτισμα (baptism);
6εἷς (one) Θεὸς (God) καὶ (and) Πατὴρ (Father) πάντων (of all), ὁ (who is) ἐπὶ (over) πάντων (all) καὶ (and) διὰ (through) πάντων (all) καὶ (and) ἐν (in) πᾶσιν (all).
7Ἑνὶ (One) δὲ (now) ἑκάστῳ (to each) ἡμῶν (of us) ἐδόθη (has been given) ἡ (-) χάρις (grace) κατὰ (according to) τὸ (the) μέτρον (measure) τῆς (of the) δωρεᾶς (gift) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ).
8διὸ (Therefore) λέγει (it says):a
“Ἀναβὰς (Having ascended) εἰς (on) ὕψος (high),
ᾐχμαλώτευσεν (He led captive) αἰχμαλωσίαν (captivity),
(καὶ) (and) ἔδωκεν (gave) δόματα (gifts) τοῖς (-) ἀνθρώποις (to men).”b
9Τὸ (-) δὲ (And), “Ἀνέβη (He ascended),” τί (what) ἐστιν (is) εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὅτι (that) καὶ (also) κατέβη (He descended) εἰς (into) τὰ (the) κατώτερα (lower) μέρη (regions) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth)?
10ὁ (The One) καταβὰς (having descended), αὐτός (the same) ἐστιν (is) καὶ (also) ὁ (one) ἀναβὰς (having ascended) ὑπεράνω (above) πάντων (all) τῶν (the) οὐρανῶν (heavens), ἵνα (so that) πληρώσῃ (He might fill) τὰ (-) πάντα (all things).
11Καὶ (And) αὐτὸς (He) ἔδωκεν (gave) τοὺς (some) μὲν (indeed) ἀποστόλους (to be apostles), τοὺς (some) δὲ (now) προφήτας (prophets), τοὺς (some) δὲ (now) εὐαγγελιστάς (evangelists), τοὺς (some) δὲ (now) ποιμένας (shepherds) καὶ (and) διδασκάλους (teachers),
12πρὸς (toward) τὸν (the) καταρτισμὸν (perfecting) τῶν (of the) ἁγίων (saints), εἰς (for) ἔργον (the work) διακονίας (of ministry), εἰς (for) οἰκοδομὴν (the building up) τοῦ (of the) σώματος (body) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ),
13μέχρι (until) καταντήσωμεν (we may attain) οἱ (-) πάντες (all) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) ἑνότητα (unity) τῆς (of the) πίστεως (faith) καὶ (and) τῆς (of the) ἐπιγνώσεως (knowledge) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), εἰς (unto) ἄνδρα (a man) τέλειον (a complete), εἰς (to) μέτρον (the measure) ἡλικίας (of the stature) τοῦ (of the) πληρώματος (fullness) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ),
14ἵνα (so that) μηκέτι (no longer) ὦμεν (we might be) νήπιοι (infants), κλυδωνιζόμενοι (being tossed by waves) καὶ (and) περιφερόμενοι (being carried about) παντὶ (by every) ἀνέμῳ (wind) τῆς (-) διδασκαλίας (of teaching), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) κυβείᾳ* (cunning) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (of men) ἐν (in) πανουργίᾳ (craftiness), πρὸς (with a view to) τὴν (the) μεθοδείαν (scheming) τῆς (-) πλάνης (of deceit).
15ἀληθεύοντες (Speaking the truth) δὲ (however) ἐν (in) ἀγάπῃ (love), αὐξήσωμεν (we should grow up) εἰς (into) αὐτὸν (Him) τὰ (in) πάντα (all things) ὅς (who) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) κεφαλή (head), Χριστός (Christ),
16ἐξ (from) οὗ (whom) πᾶν (all) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body), συναρμολογούμενον (being joined together) καὶ (and) συμβιβαζόμενον (being held together) διὰ (by) πάσης (every) ἁφῆς (ligament) τῆς (of its) ἐπιχορηγίας (supply), κατ’ (according to) ἐνέργειαν (the working) ἐν (in) μέτρῳ (the measure) ἑνὸς (individual) ἑκάστου (of each) μέρους (part), τὴν (the) αὔξησιν (increase) τοῦ (of the) σώματος (body) ποιεῖται (makes for itself) εἰς (to) οἰκοδομὴν (the building up) ἑαυτοῦ (of itself) ἐν (in) ἀγάπῃ (love).

17Τοῦτο (This) οὖν (therefore) λέγω (I say) καὶ (and) μαρτύρομαι (testify) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord): μηκέτι (No longer) ὑμᾶς (are you) περιπατεῖν (to walk) καθὼς (as) καὶ (also) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles) περιπατεῖ (are walking), ἐν (in) ματαιότητι (the futility) τοῦ (of the) νοὸς (mind) αὐτῶν (of them),
18ἐσκοτωμένοι (being darkened) τῇ (in the) διανοίᾳ (understanding), ὄντες (being) ἀπηλλοτριωμένοι (alienated from) τῆς (the) ζωῆς (life) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), διὰ (because of) τὴν (the) ἄγνοιαν (ignorance) τὴν (-) οὖσαν (being) ἐν (in) αὐτοῖς (them), διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) πώρωσιν (hardness) τῆς (of the) καρδίας (heart) αὐτῶν (of them),
19οἵτινες (who) ἀπηλγηκότες (having cast off all feeling), ἑαυτοὺς (themselves) παρέδωκαν (have given up) τῇ (to) ἀσελγείᾳ (sensuality), εἰς (for) ἐργασίαν (the working) ἀκαθαρσίας (of impurity), πάσης (all) ἐν (with) πλεονεξίᾳ (greediness).
20Ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) οὐχ (not) οὕτως (this way) ἐμάθετε (learned) τὸν (-) Χριστόν (Christ),
21εἴ (if) γε (indeed) αὐτὸν (Him) ἠκούσατε (you have heard) καὶ (and) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) ἐδιδάχθητε (have been taught), καθώς (just as) ἐστιν (is) ἀλήθεια (the truth) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).
22ἀποθέσθαι (Are to have put off) ὑμᾶς (you), κατὰ (concerning) τὴν (the) προτέραν (former) ἀναστροφὴν (way of life), τὸν (the) παλαιὸν (old) ἄνθρωπον (man), τὸν (which) φθειρόμενον (is being corrupted), κατὰ (according to) τὰς (its) ἐπιθυμίας (desires) τῆς (-) ἀπάτης (of deceit),
23ἀνανεοῦσθαι (to be renewed) δὲ (then) τῷ (in the) πνεύματι (spirit) τοῦ (of the) νοὸς (mind) ὑμῶν (of you),
24καὶ (and) ἐνδύσασθαι (to have put on) τὸν (the) καινὸν (new) ἄνθρωπον (man), τὸν (-) κατὰ (according to) Θεὸν (God) κτισθέντα (having been created) ἐν (in) δικαιοσύνῃ (righteousness) καὶ (and) ὁσιότητι (holiness) τῆς (-) ἀληθείας (of truth).
25Διὸ (Therefore) ἀποθέμενοι (having put off) τὸ (-) ψεῦδος (falsehood), λαλεῖτε (let speak) ἀλήθειαν (truth) ἕκαστος (each one) μετὰ (with) τοῦ (the) πλησίον (neighbor) αὐτοῦ (of him), ὅτι (because) ἐσμὲν (we are) ἀλλήλων (of one another) μέλη (members).
26“Ὀργίζεσθε (Be angry), καὶ (and yet) μὴ (not) ἁμαρτάνετε (sin).”c ὁ (The) ἥλιος (sun) μὴ (not) ἐπιδυέτω (let set) ἐπὶ (upon) [τῷ] (-) παροργισμῷ (anger) ὑμῶν (of you);
27μηδὲ (neither) δίδοτε (give) τόπον (opportunity) τῷ (to the) διαβόλῳ (devil).
28Ὁ (The one) κλέπτων (stealing), μηκέτι (no longer) κλεπτέτω (let him steal); μᾶλλον (rather) δὲ (however) κοπιάτω (let him toil), ἐργαζόμενος (working) ταῖς (with the) ἰδίαις (own) χερσὶν (hands) τὸ (what) ἀγαθόν (is good), ἵνα (so that) ἔχῃ (he may have something) μεταδιδόναι (to impart) τῷ (to the one) χρείαν (need) ἔχοντι (having).
29Πᾶς (Any) λόγος (word) σαπρὸς (unwholesome) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) στόματος (mouth) ὑμῶν (of you) μὴ (not) ἐκπορευέσθω (let go forth), ἀλλὰ (but) εἴ (if) τις (any) ἀγαθὸς (good) πρὸς (for) οἰκοδομὴν (edification) τῆς (of the) χρείας (need), ἵνα (so that) δῷ (it may give) χάριν (grace) τοῖς (to those) ἀκούουσιν (hearing).
30Καὶ (And) μὴ (not) λυπεῖτε (grieve) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τὸ (-) Ἅγιον (Holy) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἐν (in) ᾧ (whom) ἐσφραγίσθητε (you were sealed) εἰς (for) ἡμέραν (the day) ἀπολυτρώσεως (of redemption).
31Πᾶσα (All) πικρία (bitterness), καὶ (and) θυμὸς (rage), καὶ (and) ὀργὴ (anger), καὶ (and) κραυγὴ (clamor), καὶ (and) βλασφημία (slander), ἀρθήτω (let be removed) ἀφ’ (from) ὑμῶν (you), σὺν (along with) πάσῃ (all) κακίᾳ (malice).
32γίνεσθε (Be) δὲ (now) εἰς (to) ἀλλήλους (one another) χρηστοί (kind), εὔσπλαγχνοι (tender-hearted), χαριζόμενοι (forgiving) ἑαυτοῖς (each other), καθὼς (as) καὶ (also) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) ἐχαρίσατο (forgave) ὑμῖν (you).
