The Excellency and Glory of Christ: As the Son of God

The identity of Jesus Christ as the Son of God is a central tenet of Christian theology, underscoring His divine nature and His unique relationship with God the Father. This title, "Son of God," signifies not only His divinity but also His role in the divine plan of salvation. The excellency and glory of Christ as the Son of God are revealed through His eternal existence, His divine attributes, His redemptive work, and His exalted position.

Eternal Existence and Divine Nature

The Gospel of John opens with a profound declaration of Christ's eternal existence and divine nature: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (John 1:1). This passage affirms that Jesus, the Word, is co-eternal with God and is Himself God. His pre-existence is further emphasized in John 8:58, where Jesus declares, "Truly, truly, I tell you, before Abraham was born, I am!" This statement not only asserts His pre-existence but also aligns Him with the divine name revealed to Moses in Exodus 3:14.

Divine Attributes

As the Son of God, Christ possesses attributes that are inherently divine. He is omniscient, as demonstrated in John 2:24-25, where He knows the hearts of men. He is omnipotent, having authority over nature, disease, and even death, as seen in His miracles (e.g., calming the storm in Mark 4:39, healing the sick in Matthew 8:16, and raising Lazarus in John 11:43-44). Furthermore, He is omnipresent, promising His continual presence with His followers: "And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age" (Matthew 28:20).

Redemptive Work

The glory of Christ as the Son of God is supremely manifested in His redemptive work. He is the "Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world" (John 1:29). His sacrificial death on the cross and subsequent resurrection are the cornerstone of Christian faith, providing atonement for sin and the promise of eternal life. Romans 5:8 highlights the love of God demonstrated through Christ's sacrifice: "But God proves His love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

Exalted Position

Following His resurrection, Christ is exalted to the right hand of God, a position of honor and authority. Philippians 2:9-11 describes this exaltation: "Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name above all names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." This exaltation affirms His sovereignty and the ultimate recognition of His lordship by all creation.

Unique Sonship

The Sonship of Christ is unique, distinct from believers who are also called children of God. Jesus is the "only begotten Son" (John 3:16), indicating a unique and eternal relationship with the Father. This relationship is characterized by mutual love and unity, as expressed in John 17:24: "Father, I want those You have given Me to be with Me where I am, that they may see My glory, the glory You gave Me because You loved Me before the foundation of the world."

Mediator and High Priest

As the Son of God, Christ serves as the mediator between God and humanity. 1 Timothy 2:5 states, "For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus." His role as high priest is elaborated in the book of Hebrews, where He is described as one who "has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin" (Hebrews 4:15). His priesthood is eternal, "in the order of Melchizedek" (Hebrews 7:17), and He continually intercedes for believers.

Revelation of the Father

Christ, as the Son of God, reveals the Father to humanity. In John 14:9, Jesus tells Philip, "Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father." This revelation is not merely through His teachings but through His very being and actions, which perfectly reflect the character and will of God. As the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of His being (Hebrews 1:3), Christ makes the invisible God known to the world.

The excellency and glory of Christ as the Son of God are foundational to understanding His divine mission and the salvation He offers. Through His eternal existence, divine attributes, redemptive work, exalted position, unique Sonship, mediatorial role, and revelation of the Father, Christ embodies the fullness of God's glory and grace.
