The Excellency and Glory of the Church: Sin Obscures

The Church, as the body of Christ, is designed to reflect the excellency and glory of God. It is called to be a beacon of light in a world shrouded in darkness, manifesting the holiness, love, and truth of the Lord. However, sin acts as a veil, obscuring the Church's intended radiance and diminishing its witness to the world.

Biblical Foundation

The Church's glory is rooted in its relationship with Christ. Ephesians 5:25-27 states, "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her to sanctify her, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to Himself as a glorious church, without stain or wrinkle or any such blemish, but holy and blameless." This passage highlights the Church's calling to be pure and radiant, reflecting the character of Christ.

The Impact of Sin

Sin, however, mars this divine image. Isaiah 59:2 declares, "But your iniquities have built barriers between you and your God, and your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear." Sin creates a separation between the Church and God, hindering its ability to fully experience and exhibit His glory.

The Apostle Paul warns of the consequences of sin within the Church in 1 Corinthians 5:6 : "Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough?" Here, Paul illustrates how even a small amount of sin can permeate and corrupt the entire body, obscuring its witness and effectiveness.

The Call to Holiness

To restore its glory, the Church is called to repentance and holiness. 1 Peter 1:15-16 exhorts believers, "But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do, for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy.'" Holiness is not merely an individual pursuit but a corporate mandate for the Church to reflect God's nature.

The process of sanctification is essential for the Church to reclaim its glory. 2 Corinthians 7:1 encourages, "Therefore, beloved, since we have these promises, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that defiles body and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God." Through confession, repentance, and the transformative work of the Holy Spirit, the Church can overcome the obscuring effects of sin.

The Role of Leadership

Church leaders bear a significant responsibility in addressing sin and guiding the congregation toward holiness. Titus 1:7-9 outlines the qualifications for overseers, emphasizing the need for integrity and sound doctrine: "As God’s steward, an overseer must be above reproach—not self-absorbed, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not greedy for money. Instead, he must be hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it was taught, so that by sound teaching he will be able to encourage others and refute those who contradict it."

The Promise of Restoration

Despite the obscuring effects of sin, the promise of restoration remains. Joel 2:25 offers hope: "I will repay you for the years eaten by locusts—the swarming locust, the young locust, the destroying locust, and the devouring locust—My great army that I sent against you." God is faithful to restore the Church's glory when it turns back to Him in humility and obedience.

In summary, while sin obscures the excellency and glory of the Church, the path to restoration lies in repentance, holiness, and faithful leadership. Through these, the Church can once again shine brightly, fulfilling its divine purpose as the radiant bride of Christ.

Lamentations 2:14,15
Your prophets have seen vain and foolish things for you: and they have not discovered your iniquity, to turn away your captivity; but have seen for you false burdens and causes of banishment.
